Fede Alvarez, Fx man and commercial director, brings us this wicked Sci-Fi short about the inevitable day when the giant robots finally get tired of us sticking forks in our toasters and come from The Forbidden Planet to hand us all our asses. It’s called Panic Attack and yes, seeing 200 foot Iron Giants striding purposefully out of the fog to stomp pedestrians and hurl alien firepower at our vulnerable capitols is a pulse quickening experience. It’s a must see. Thanks Quiet Earth for keeping a watch out. »

"Monsieur Verdoux" -- Starring Charlie Chaplin. Also starring Mady Correll, Isobel Elsom, Audrey Betz, Ada May, Martha Ray. Directed by Charlie Chaplin. (1947, 124mins, B&W) Chaplin called this film his "cleverest and most brilliant", but he is certainly not the familiar Tramp in it. He plays a suave serial killer who makes his living marrying and murdering lonely rich women. Chaplin turned this shocking conceit into a black comedy that seems surprisingly modern to us today -- especially in its presentation of the hypocrisy of societies that condemn murder committed by individuals but glorify war.
A rare big screen revival.

When was the last time Halloween came five times in one month? It’s been happening this October thanks to Bob Burns, monster kid fandom’s legendary “gift that keeps on giving”—and it has only taken him 42 years to get it all together! At the Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween website, a two-hour-plus documentary telling the story of Bob and Kathy Burns’ live Halloween shows has been serialized; the first of the five parts became available on October 5, and the rest are being spaced throughout the month.
For newbies, a bit of backstory: In 1967, Bob and wife Kathy, ensconced in their new Burbank home, decided to do a little more for trick-or-treaters than drop candy in their bags. When kids knocked on the door, it opened to reveal a “mad lab” complete with Frankenstein’s Monster (a dummy strapped to a diagonal operating table) and crackling lab equipment. For the next several years, »

Undertones: Volume 6 The classic science fiction film emerged during a period of great societal paranoia in the Us in the early 1950s. The post-WW2 environment saw an increased concern with nuclear armament and a fear of the infiltration of communism on the American way of life. Essentially, the sci-fi film was Hollywood’s great metaphor for these threats; its power largely dependent on playing on the fears of the cinema-goer. Many of the films were low-budget affairs pumped out by the studios; a steady stream of high-camp and cheap thrills in order to provide what one can only assume was constant necking-fodder for teens at drive-ins. Amongst these ‘B’ pictures, many of which have been long lost in time to the more technologically-savvy audiences of recent years but considered charming nostalgia to retro film junkies, are films that stand out for their innovation and social commentary and are considered classics by modern cinophiles. »

It's hard to interview Leslie Neilsen and keep a straight face. The spoof-master general simply won't allow it.
When Fango recently caught up with the Airplane! and Naked Gun actor to discuss his portrayal of Kay (yes, a woman) in the upcoming Anchor Bay release of Stan Helsing (on DVD & Blu-ray October 27), Neilsen kept the jokes running at a steady pace as we quizzed him on everything from Forbidden Planet to Scary Movie.
Leslie Neilsen: So... you've always wanted to be in show business?
Fangoria: How did you get involved in Stan Helsing and what is the film about?
Ln: I don't know! (Laughs) The answer to both of those questions is that I don't know! (Laughing Again) It's funny because I bumped in Bo [Zenga, the director] in Vancouver and he said that he'd like me to play a part in the movie. I read the script and I noticed that there »

Sci-fi film makers have for years had to solve a tricky problem: How should electric cars sound? Nissan's facing a similar problem for its real e-car, and turned back to Sci-fi--its Leaf Ev will sound like those in Blade Runner.
Over at AllCarsElectric they've got a post about this very issue, highlighting the work of Nissan's Toshiyuki Tabata. An engineer for many years concerned with suppressing the sounds Nissan's vehicles make, Tabata is now leading the team that's crafting the artificial sounds Nissan's future electric cars will make. The team decided that trying to recreate the sound of an internal combustion engine was crazy, despite Nissan's management steering them in this direction. I say hats-off to Tabata for making this very bold decision: "We decided that if we're going to do this, if we have to make sound, then we're going to make it beautiful and futuristic."

The world's dogs will never again have to settle for watching interminable Air Bud sequels, Marley and Me or any of the other dogcentric movies that were made for their owners. Now they have a film of their own: ShakesPaws.
Described as 'A Film for Dogs by Dogs', ShakesPaws features a variety of dogs that 'wag, pant, and paw through over a dozen Shakespearean favorites including 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth', 'Hamlet', 'Othello', and 'A Midsummer's Night Dream'.'

Actor Bob Hastings is a television veteran. Yet, you are more likely to know his voice than his face. He has worked in many genres and featured in several innovative radio and television science fiction shows. His career took in the earliest days of TV entertainment and playing a regular character in acclaimed superhero cartoons from the 1990s. But it all began with a song.
"I think it was about 1935 or the beginning of 1936," Hastings said. "A teacher heard me sing in school at an assembly and he thought I sang well enough that I should be on radio. So I started singing radio shows and from there... There was a newspaper called 'The Daily Mirror' and they had a children's show on Wmca in New York and I sang on that...for maybe a couple of years. Then I went over to NBC and that was before the networks »

If you've ever wanted to go toe-to-toe with Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still or get up close and personal with Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet, now is your chance.
Underwire has a rundown of the roboworld exhibition at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, which opened this past Saturday, and its all-star robot line-up. The exhibit features the original Maria (pictured at right) from Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis, as well as replicas of this year's Robot Hall of Fame inductees, the T-800 Terminator and the trio of 'bots from Silent Running, Huey, Dewy, and Louie. You'll also be able to check out Robby, Gort, R2-D2 and C-3Po, and 2001: A Space Odyssey's Hal 9000.
Do you think Michael Bay's urinating robot Bumblebee will ever find itself in such respectable company? I mean, other inductees do include the iRobot Roomba. What about the oft-overlooked Johnny Five? »

Terminator Salvation came to theaters on May 21st. It sparked an idea in my head about technology in our society and if it’s really possible get to the point of what the Terminator franchise projects for our future.
When I presented the idea to a co-worker, he dissed it immediately. When a scientist or engineer starts to immediately diss the possibility of an idea, it’s a good clue that it might be a good idea for us to wrap our imaginations around. Hence, the birth of this article.
This was going to be a short piece… but unfortunately, like the technology in Terminator, the more I looked into the subject matter, the more the article grew on me. It got bigger than the original idea. It took me over and I found myself inexorably abducted into having to write it.
It became just a wee bit more than it’s original design. »

As much as the incomparable John Cusack in High Fidelity made it über cool to compose ‘top fives’ – or ‘top tens’ in this case – personally, I’ve always found it a colossal struggle, as though I’m somehow betraying otherwise very close friends; a mother forced to select favourites from her brood.
Given that my book, Monster Movies, contains 75 or so (all) marvellous monster flicks that have been granted inclusion within the 45,000 words/200-ish pages for one reason and one reason alone (they’re fine examples of the genre), I’d like to nominate each of these films as a top monster movie. But – and I capitalise ‘but’ to emphasise the shackles of my brief – if forced down on my knees with pistol pressed to temple, the following films listed below would compose a Top Ten Monster Movies of All Time, and I’ll endeavour to explain why.
