Glamorous Lana Turner has a nice role as Edwina Esketh, the attractive but immoral wife of cuckold Lord Esketh. Mrs. Esketh delights in humiliating her husband, whom she feels is beneath her and married her for her money. The film doesn't explore just how Edwina came to possess such great wealth or why she would be bothered with the constraints of marriage when she takes great pride in her sexual conquests. She falls hard for an Indian doctor and pursues him with an intensity she never before experienced with a man and neither Edwina or Dr. Safi bother to hide their affair. All seems well between them until torrential rains, an earthquake and floods bring pestilence, disease, suffering and death to the town of Ranchipur. Dr. Safti puts his priorities in order but Edwina learns a bitter lesson about what is really important in life.
