DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

13 November 2009 6:30 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Casting Tidbits assemble! First up, THR reports that Gus Van Sant's now untitled drama (formerly known as Restless) will be gaining the next generation of young actors as Henry Hopper (son of Dennis Hopper) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) join actress Mia Wasikowska in this story about a teenage boy (Hopper) and girl (Wasikowska) who share a preoccupation with mortality. Fisk will play Wasikowska's sister while other new cast members include Chin Han playing a doctor treating the girl, Ryo Kase as the spirit of a World War II kamikaze pilot who regularly visits the boy and Jane Adams as the boy's aunt. Next, Heat Vision announced even more casting for the already talent packed comic book adaptation Red, as Julian McMahon (Fantastic Four), Ernest Borgnine (Marty), Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws) and Brian Cox (Fantastic Mr. Fox) will be joining Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis, and Helen Mirren in »

That'd Really Blow Your Skirt Up

14 September 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Fifty-five years ago today this very minute, Marilyn Monroe stood on a grate at Lexington and 52nd right here in NYC to film the infamous white skirt scene in The Seven Year Itch (1955).

According to This Day in History Joe Dimaggio (her husband at the time) was furious and thought the scene was exploitative. Well, duh. Who did he think he was marrying? It wasn't the first time or the last that Monroe's sex appeal was the whole point of an image or a film sequence. Alas, the footage you see in the movie was a reshoot thus ruining the point of this post --shut up, I just like talking about Marilyn. Though it's considered minor Billy Wilder, Itch was popular and the director and star would gloriously reunite for the classic Some Like It Hot (1959). This first pairing won some minor awards attention and Monroe was nominated for a »

Michael J. Fox wins Emmy No. 5 for 'Rescue Me'

13 September 2009 10:23 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Michael J. Fox won his first Emmy on the drama side for a recurring role on "Rescue Me" as the wheelchair-bound boyfriend of Denis Leary's ex. Fox had contended in this guest actor category in 2006 for a guest spot on "Boston Legal" (he lost to Christian Clemenson on that same show). Fox's four other Emmy wins came for comedy - three consecutive lead actor awards for "Family Ties" (1986-1988) and another for his final season on "Spin City" in 2000.

Fox's competition this year was formidable. Edward Asner picked up his 17th Emmy bid for an appearance on "CSI: NY." Asner already owns seven Emmys won across four categories. Oscar champ Ernest Borgnine ("Marty") was the 21st performer to nab a guest acting nod for an appearance on "ER."  Borgnine also lost his previous two Emmy bids (1963 lead actor, "McHale's Navy"; 1980 supporting actor movie/mini, "All Quiet on the Western Front »

Honoring Oscar-Winning Actor Ernest Borgnine: An Appreciation

28 July 2009 10:17 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – HollywoodChicago.com’s ace photographer, Joe Arce, recently photographed the Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine at a book signing event in Chicago. The 92 year-old survivor was in excellent spirits, telling many rich anecdotes to the gathered crowd.

As a kid, I first came upon Ernie as the rascally Lt. Commander Quinton McHale in “McHale’s Navy” (1962-66), heavy in afternoon reruns at the time. I was surprised to see him re-appear in the cult disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972) as the loud and abrasive Mike Rogo, the cop that never believed Gene Hackman’s preacher-to-the-promised-land of rescue.

92 year-old Oscar winning actor Ernest Borgnine flashes his famous smile for the HollywoodChicago.com lens at the signing of his book ‘Ernie: The Autobiography’ on July 20, 2009 at Borders North Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Actress Betsy Blair Dies

19 March 2009 9:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Award-winning actress Betsy Blair has died at the age of 85.

Blair died on Friday in London after suffering from a long illness, according to her daughter Kerry Kelly Novick.

The redheaded actress climbed to international fame playing Clara Snyder in the 1955 film adaptation of television play Marty, which earned her a BAFTA award for Best Foreign Actress in 1956 and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

At 17 years old, Blair married legendary actor Gene Kelly, Kerry's father. Details of their 16-year marriage were resurrected nearly five decades after their split, for the actress' 2003 memoir The Memory of All That.

In 1940, Blair made her Broadway debut dancing in the Cole Porter musical Panama Hattie. She later took the lead in Willliam Saroyan's play The Beautiful People and understudied the role of Laura in the Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie.

Blair also appeared in a handful of American films including 1948 movies Another Part of the Forest and The Snake Pit, and Kind Lady, in 1951, before she was banned from work for her political affiliations and placed on the infamous Hollywood blacklist.

She then moved to Paris and finally settled in London when roles dried up in the U.S., starring in European films including Calle Mayor, in 1956, Il Grido, in 1957 and All Night Long, in 1962.

One year later, Blair married director Karel Reisz, who died in 2002.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. »

TCM: Private Screenings—Interview With Ernest Borgnine

26 January 2009 10:15 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Along with discussing TCM’s upcoming “31 Days of Oscar” and reminiscing on Arlene Dahl, Robert Osborne and I talked about Ernest Borgnine, with whom he recently taped an interview for TCM’s “Private Screenings”, which will premiere on Monday, January 26, 2009, 5:00Pm (Pt), followed by a four-film tribute. Borgnine, a venerable 92-year-old, is the oldest living Academy Award®-winning actor, now that Charlton Heston has passed away. Osborne and I exchanged a few comments regarding this Hollywood legend and then a few hours later I was offered the chance to share a few minutes with Ernie as well.

* * * Robert Osborne: [Ernie] may be matched with Olivia DeHaviland because she’s 92 as well. Jennifer Jones, I believe, is a couple of years younger. I must say that—knowing both of them—Borgnine and Olivia, is that they are both examples of how great it can be to live that long if you have good genes. »
