You don’t necessarily think of Manny Farber as your Baedeker to the shadings and luridities of mainstay American movie acting, as a dab hand of the concise plot summary that uncoils into deft film critique, or associate him with audience recommendations and words like “marvelous,” “sensitive,” “poignant,” and “sparkling.” You particularly don’t think of Farber this way if your experience of his writing is confined to Negative Space. Yet consider three short illustrative moments from his many, sometimes-weekly film columns of the 1940s and '50s.
This is Farber on Frank Sinatra & Co. in From Here to Eternity for The Nation, August 29, 1953:
The laurel wreaths should be handed out to an actor who isn’t even in the picture, Marlon Brando, and to an unknown person who first decided to use Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed in the unsweetened roles of Maggio, a tough little Italian American soldier, »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long to talk about their new film, “Planet 51,” a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy.
When American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker (Johnson) lands on Planet 51, he thinks he's the first person to step foot on it only to discover that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion "Rover" and his new friend Lem (Long), Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.
Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long are fabulous people and we really appreciated their time. »

Last week, Sony held a press junket at the Griffith Observatory, here in Los Angeles, to help promote their upcoming animated movie Planet 51. Since the film takes place on another planet, I think the location was perfect. Also, almost every press day is held at a hotel, and it’s great to “shake and bake” the junket format. But while the location was different, that didn’t stop Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson from making all the journalists laugh during most of their press conference. While you may be sick of Justin Long and his Mac commercials, the guy is quick on his feet when reacting to questions. I was very impressed.
Anyway, after the jump to can either read the transcript of the press conference or listen to the audio. While I always think listening to the audio is better than reading a trancript, »

Artist Pete Emslie provides us with this personal memento from Al Martino. Visit Pete's site at The Cartoon Cave.
By Lee Pfeiffer
Popular crooner Al Martino has passed away at age 82. No cause of death has yet been released. Although primarily known for singing love songs, Martino gained immortality on the screen as The Godfather's Johnny Fontaine, the down-in-the-dumps singer whose career is revived when Don Corleone makes a film producer an offer he can't refuse to give Johnny the starring role in a war movie. The character was said to have been based on Frank Sinatra, whose career followed a similar trajectory and was revived with his Oscar winning performance in a war movie - From Here to Eternity. The similarities resulted in Sinatra having to contend with an untrue urban legend - that he got the part in the film by having gangsters cut off the head »

"One Tree Hill" cast take viewers behind the scenes for a quick tour of their filming day. Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols summarized what they have done in L.A. Beach set and how it will contribute to the story. Nichols spilled that Brooke comes into L.A. just to tell Julian that she loves her. Bush added that complications are still entailing the relationship although it may seem to be a happy ending.
In fact, the scene that Bush and Nichols have shot will be included in the September 14 premiere. It pays a homage to movie classic "From Here to Eternity" where two lovebirds lie on the beach sand and make out whilst the waves sweep them over.
The other featurette which is released is Robert Buckley's first day of work. Creator Mark Schwahn gives an introduction into the actor and his character as Nathan's new sports agent. »
