Right at this moment, you're either gearing up for the Season 3 finale of Mad Men, you're seasons behind on DVD, or you've never seen an episode. No matter your situation I hope you got something from this "Mad Men at the Movies" series which looked at the movies referenced on the series. We'll deal with seasons 2&3 later. As you read this I am at a fab Mad Men party.
The last two episodes of the season 1 have no movie love. But in "Nixon vs. Kennedy" the jaded Don Draper we know (Jon Hamm) flashes back to meeting the original Don Draper (Troy Ruptash) who is unimpressed with the then naive young man.
Don Draper to Don Draper: What misconception travelled down the road and made you want to be here... a movie?Deliciously dizzying it is. A television series that loves the movies disses the cinema's great capacity to lie »

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!
Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. You can get almost as much pleasure out of Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson's performances, »

It's been a month since I did one of these Mad Men posts and I'm still on the first season. I mean that only in the sense of these posts. I'm right up to date on the actual Mad Men show, which wraps Season 3 up next weekend. I hate to see it go but at least I'll catch up on the blog with the movie references. (Find the silver lining!)
1.11 "Indian Summer"
Rachel Menken (Maggie Siff) has confessed to her sister Barbara (Rebecca Creskoff) that she's seeing Don Draper, a married man. Her sister is understandably concerned...
Barbara: All I know is what I see in the movies. It's magical and then they start talking about him leaving his wife... and then he doesn't. I saw this one where the husband gets the woman pregnant so he kills her.
You don't want to be that woman.Hmmm. Help me out here, »

My favorite actor ever (yes, the tippity top) would have been turned 89 this past Saturday had he lived. Not that he would have lived to be 89 but still... I'm sad that I forgot. I always feel I should write about him more often. I did try to spur on the communal writing with that blog-a-thon a couple years back. At least there was that.
Thankfully Kim Morgan did not forget and wrote up a beautiful piece on the man, his work in A Place in the Sun and the ineffable sadness in his eyes. And that dance scene -- Stevens’ close-ups. They obviously reveal the actors' beauty, but also how much they, and particularly Monty, could say with their faces. Clift may be blurting out that he loves Taylor, but his beseeching, poignant eyes reveal so many layers of desire, you know something is haunting him even if you don't fully understand the circumstances. »
