Unusual and suspense-filled psychological thriller., 15 March 2000
7/10

This is a most unusual film and although not as riveting as it could have been with tighter direction and more at stake in the plot - it does hold one's interest until the end. Barrymore is fine as an art collector whose home is invaded by an unscrupulous poseur. He takes over her life and home, posing as a nephew and giving out that she has become mentally ill. All the while he is selling her possessions and finally the house to build a fortune for himself. Evans is charming but lacks the necessary air of the sinister to make this situation truly chilling. Lansbury, Lloyd and Blair are fine in support. The cinematography, art direction and score are all top rate, but for some reason the Academy only nominated the Costumes which were minimal and unexceptional - go figure. Very worth a look - the ending may be too pat. This needs a remake and a rewrite - it should have all the suspense of CAPE FEAR but does not.
