When one considers old musicals, one would immediately think of An American in Paris or Singing in the Rain: slick talking characters who can also tap dance really well. Sometimes a musical like My Fair Lady would include a great story too. It’s a real difference from today’s frenetic, tightly cut and choreographed, sensuous musicals. In the case of Nine, which I have not seen on stage, it looks to also be a departure from the original inspiration, Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2. I don’t know how many potential audience members will have heard of the Italian film (I have no idea who goes to these things, anyway), but it doesn’t look like that will matter: there is no reason to think that knowledge of the original is required. The new trailer, which you can see below, mostly features Kate Hudson singing Cinema Italiano, with quick cuts to other parts of the film. »

Warner Home Video just announced a new program where you can upgrade several of your DVD titles to Blu-ray for as low as $7.95, and right now the price doesn't go any higher than $9.95. This is a similar program to the Red2Blu offer they made allowing customers to upgrade their HD DVD titles to Blu-ray, a program I actually took advantage of and loved it as a result.
The process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. Consumers who place orders over $25 will receive free shipping. For a complete list of titles visit DVD2Blu.com, but I have included the most recent list of titles and prices directly below. 10,000 B.C. ($9.95) Rush Hour 3 ($9.95) Full Metal Jacket ($9.95) Pan's »

Warner Bros. has announced a DVD to Blu-ray upgrade program. While the list doesn’t include all their titles, it’s at least a start. According to WB, the process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. If you mail in one DVD, it’s $7.95 plus shipping. If you order more than $25, you’ll receive free shipping.
While some people haven’t been converted to Blu-ray, I’m all in. I think the picture quality is amazing on Blu-ray and I definitely see a difference between DVD and the HD format. All I can say is, if you have an 1080p TV, the format is absolutely worth the investment. For a complete list of what WB is willing to »

There are so many interesting stories of real people in the world, that the biopic is one genre I'm always interested in keeping a close eye on. Not everyone's story is the same (even if there are certain formulaic elements to the genre) and there's so much that I don't know about so many differently people. It looks like we'll be learning more courtesy of DreamWorks as Variety reports they've picked up a screenplay written by Doug Wright (Memoirs of a Geisha) about legendary composer George Gershwin responsible for such classic and easily recognizable pieces as "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris". Read on! The studio has been quiet about the project because they're still finalizing the deal to develop this film in the same vein as another major biopic of theirs: the Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic (led by Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider) with the full »

In a story from Variety, DreamWorks is putting together a biopic on composer George Gershwin.
The studio bought a screenplay from Doug Wright (Memoirs of a Geisha). Apparently, the deal for this script sale is almost complete.
The film will follow Gershwin's life, from his early years in Brooklyn as the child of Russian immigrants to his untimely death in Hollywood in 1937 at age 38. Throughout his short life, he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows with his older brother Ira. His music continues to be used in commercials, TV and films. In fact, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris" are among the most recognizable musical works throughout the world.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – Two of the most beloved musicals of all time recently made their debut on Blu-Ray with extravagant collections of special features, beautiful HD, and crystal clear audio. All musical fans will want to add the Best Picture-winning “An American in Paris” and “Gigi” to their Blu-Ray collection.
One of my favorite musicals, 1951’s “An American in Paris,” an Oscar-winner for Best Picture, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Score, and Screenplay, is such an essential film to the history of the musical genre that it seems like a no-brainer for HD Blu-Ray. It’s an undeniable classic featuring one of the great stars of the musical, Gene Kelly, at his athletic peak and includes the debut of the magical Leslie Caron.
An American in Paris was released on Blu-Ray on March 31st, 2009.
