In Loving Memory of Moviedrome

It will be no great shock to hear that living in London has both advantages and disadvantages. It is true that the cost of a 200 yd train journey may be the equivalent of a small flat in Hull, and rather like rats in New York it is said that you are never more than 100 metres away from a Premiership footballer or someone "in media", but the capital does have one thing in its favour: a vast range of unique cultural opportunities, among them some of the best independent cinemas in the country. It is true that many other cities, too, offer a wonderful alternative to the looming multiplex (Brighton, Oxford, Manchester, Bristol, to name just four that I have experienced myself) but merely by virtue of geographical and population size, London is unrivalled. At anything up to £15 they can be expensive, but for the chance to see a treasured classic on the big screen, »

Staying Sober with Viggo

25 November 2009 5:52 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Steve Pond

The last time I interviewed Viggo Mortensen, we got thrown out of a bar.

That was more than a decade ago, when he was promoting a mediocre movie and I was writing for a mediocre magazine. Viggo got on the wrong side of an aging bartender (the only other person in the Sunset Boulevard joint) by asking if he could turn down the volume on the soap opera blaring from a TV in the corner.

The guy flipped out, told us to leave, and threatened to call the cops. Since I lived a block away from the bar, we got a couple of beers from my refrigerator and finished the interview on my front... »

Christina Aguilera plays an ambitious girl from a small town with a big voice who gains success in a neo-burlesque club reminiscent of the club in "Cabaret." Kristen Bell stars as Aguilera's rival called Nikki, a loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club. Her life spirals out of control when Aguilera's character gets the spotlight. Stanley Tucci will have the part of the manager of the Sunset Boulevard club who is also the best friend and confidante of former dancer Tess (played by Cher), who takes the young girl under her wing. »

Michael Winner: 'The only purpose of life is to avoid boredom'

16 November 2009 1:37 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The notorious film director on cheating death, the awfulness of restaurants – and how he can't stand boring people

It is with a mixture of fear and exhilaration that I approach Michael Winner's large house – he likes to describe it as a mansion – in London's fashionable Holland Park. God knows how much it's worth – £25m maybe. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin lives next door, in an even bigger house. An attractive, slightly forbidding young woman answers the door – I later discover she is a resting actress called Ruby – and she shows me into Winner's private cinema, filled with memorabilia from half a lifetime of movie-making and an entire lifetime of trouble-making.

There are seats for 30 people, a bar, a director's chair with Winner's name on it, the Winner puppet from Spitting Image, a signed photograph of Marilyn Monroe, pictures of some scantily clad starlets, and hundreds of photographs of stars »

Do we have another surprise late contender ready to join “Crazy Heart” in some major Oscar races? The next couple of weeks will tell the tale, but at the moment director Jim Sheridan’s “Brothers” is starting to look as if it may become a legitimate player.

On Sunday night, the military-themed film, which is based on Danish director Susanne Bier’s award-winning 2004 movie “Brodre,” screened for members of the Directors Guild at the DGA Theater on Sunset Boulevard. The next day, the Envelope’s Pete Hammond (who moderated the post-... »

Susannah Straughan, London Correspondent

3 November 2009 2:05 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Susannah negotiated those difficult teenage years in front of a black and white TV, in the company of the inimitable Humphrey Bogart. There were many long, smoke-filled nights, punctuated by sardonic dialogue and the sound of some B-grade villain expiring in a hail of bullets. After studying law, Susannah embarked on a career in book and magazine publishing that has so far failed to make her rich or famous. But thanks to a nine-year stint at Radio Times magazine she feels certain that she has already met more than her fair share of film geeks and fan-boys. A team lunch last Christmas with film critic and football fan Barry Norman was a highlight. Movie heaven: Sunset Boulevard, The Lady Eve, The Big Sleep, La Confidential, The Graduate, Chinatown, All about My Mother. I could go on . . . See 'Seduth' Creators Barker, Monfette in Person this Thursday

28 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If your calendar from here to Halloween isn't already filled with candy-fueled bacchanals, come to Meltdown Comics' Sunset Blvd. location in Los Angeles on Thursday evening for an in-store appearance by Clive Barker, Chris Monfette and Ray Zone, who collaborated on a new comic book entitled Seduth. Barker, who previously worked on adaptations of his own work and original material in the medium, enlisted Monfette's help to come up with a new, original story, while Zone expertly rendered images for it - in 3-D, no less.

Barker's public appearance just days before Halloween seems remarkably appropriate given his career-long commitment to the 'dark arts': in addition to his work in comics, he's not only a renowned novelist, but a filmmaker, having directed Hellraiser and Nightbreed, and effectively created Candyman. Monfette, meanwhile, is also working on an adaptation of Barker's short story Down, Satan, and wrote an original script entitled Deep »

The crew that worked with Michael Jackson while he prepared for his 50-show This Is It concert run in London had no idea about the unfortunate events that were to come; in fact, many of the people involved felt that the final rehearsals were incredible and a sign of what was to come from the King of Pop.

"Michael stood out in front of the stage with me and looked at the rehearsal and said, 'This is the dream. This is the dream, good Kenny. You did it,' " director Kenny Ortega told MTV News. "I think there was this feeling in the room, in the air — we »
