In order to get approval for his film, The Quiet Man (1952), John Ford had to agree to first make this film starring both John Wayne and 'Maureen O'Hara'. The studio thought "The Quiet Man" would tank at the box office and thought a western would recoup any losses.
Ben Johnson (Tyree) and Victor McLaglen (Quincannon) had the same character names in both She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. The oddity is in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, the earlier film, they were older soldiers with higher ranks than in Rio Grande.
John Wayne wore a smaller hairpiece than usual to make his character look slightly older.
