Now that we've all had enough time to get used to the idea that Spielberg is about to remake one of the most respected films in history, maybe it will help a little to know that it might star Robert Downey Jr. According to the La Times' Hero Complex blog, the announcement is imminent that Downey will be starring in Spielberg's update of the classic film, which marks a change from some of the other names that had been attached, including the obvious heir apparent to Jimmy Stewart (and long time Spielberg cohort) Tom Hanks and Will Smith.
Harvey was the story of a gentle soul by the name of Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, who happens to be an invisible six-foot rabbit named Harvey. The original play won the Pulitzer Prize, but most of us probably remember the 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart as Dowd. News of the remake hit back in August, »

After portraying legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and metal-clad superhero Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. will reportedly be taking a drastic turn with his next role. The Los Angeles Times reports that Downey may be about to sign on for Steven Spielberg's remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart classic Harvey, about a man who pals around with a giant rabbit that no one else can see. The original movie, which was based on a Pulitzer-winning play, scored Stewart an Oscar nomination. Other actors who've been bandied about for the lead role of Elwood P. Dowd include Tom Hanks and Will Smith. Spout off in... »

We may see that giant rabbit yet. After reigniting his career as billionaire playboy Tony Stark in Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to star in the Steven Spielberg-directed remake of the Jimmy Stewart classic Harvey, reports the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog. The original, as you may recall, tells the story of a man whose Bff is a large bunny that no one else can see. This creates problems. Still, with the supertalented star on a roll with bad-ass parts in Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, this could be a fun change of pace. Or a disappointment. Oh, who knows? But we would go see this based on Rdj alone. Would you? »

Steven Spielberg insists his biopic of Abraham Lincoln is not finished even as Robert Redford gears up his film about the presidential assassination conspiracy.
Spielberg has been trying to bring his Honest Abe film to the screen since 2001, even casting Liam Neeson in the lead about four years ago. The biopic was intended to focus on the President’s handling of the Civil War and end with a John Wilkes Booth bullet, but it was sidelined by budget and location problems and Spielberg has moved on to several other projects.
The prolific filmmaker is currently working on a remake of Harvey and eying Robert Downey Jr. for the lead (Elwood P. Dowd, originally played by Jimmy Stewart).
Meanwhile, James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn have joined The Conspirator, a period drama focused on the aftermath of Lincoln’s death. The production starts shooting next month, so it will clearly be »

Earlier today we keyed you in on the status of Steven Spielberg's forthcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic, but there was a tidbit of information hidden within that same Variety update that otherwise might have gotten overlooked. Apparently Robert Downey Jr. might be the top contender to fill the lead role in Spielberg's remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart film Harvey. In a fleeting mention the article simply says: "Spielberg is presently focusing on his 'reimagining' of Harvey, with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit." Blink and you could've missed it. Thankfully we've brought it to your attention. Much of the talk about who would fill Jimmy Stewart's shoes for this contemporary Harvey immediately focused on an actor who has been referred to as our generations' Jimmy Stewart. That actor is Tom Hanks. But Variety has said that the correlation between Hanks and Stewart is »

With the amount of remakes going around, it's no surprise that even Steven Spielberg is getting in on the action. Spielberg's working on a remake of the 1950 movie Harvey, which stars James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a kind man who has an invisible 6-foot rabbit for a friend. In a piece about Spielberg's movie about President Lincoln, Variety reported a brief note that that none other than Robert Downey Jr. is up for the role in Spielberg's "re-imagining"
Spielberg is currently working on Harvey while his Lincoln movie is being re-written by Tony Kushner. Despite Robert Redford working on another Lincoln-related movie, The Conspirator, Spielberg says there's no conflict between the projects:
We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. »

Today we have some news on two upcoming Steven Spielberg projects: his Abraham Lincoln biopic, and his adaptation of the Mary Chase award-winning play, Harvey, which is also a remake of the 1950 James Stewart classic.
Lincoln
Spielberg has been attached to a biopic about Lincoln for a few years now, with Liam Neeson also attached to star as the former President. The project was recently postponed because of budget and location restraints, but Spielberg still has it very much in mind. He recently spoke to Variety in wake of the news that Robert Redford would be directing a competing film, called The Conspirator (about one of the conspirators of Lincoln’s assassination), assuring us that the competition won’t deter him from making His biopic. Spielberg had this to say:
“We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, »

Back in August, Steven Spielberg announced that he will next helm a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play "Harvey," about a man and his friendship with an invisible six-foot tall rabbit. "Harvey" was first adapted for the screen in 1950 with James Stewart in the starring role as Elwood P. Dowd. And because of this, many assumed that Spielberg would cast Tom Hanks, who is considered a moder-day Stewart and has worked with the director on such films as "The Terminal," "Catch Me If You Can" and "Saving Private Ryan." Variety has now confirmed that Hanks is not being considered for the lead and that Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) is. The new movie is currently in pre-production and will begin filming in the first quarter of next year. 1950 "Harvey" Trailer: »

Two very interesting developments on the Steven Spielberg front: 1) He's still set on making a Lincoln movie even though Robert Redford is beating him to the punch, and 2) He might cast Robert Downey, Jr. to play the Jimmy Stewart role in the update of Harvey.
In reverse order - so why in the hell didn't I just reverse the order above? - Robert Downey, Jr. as Elwood P. Dowd, a man who has an invisible giant rabbit as a best friend, is an idea with loads of potential. In fact, now that I hear it, I'm going to have trouble finding a better candidate. So kudos to Spielberg.
On the Lincoln front, I can't remember the last time Spielberg kept pushing back a project the way he has this one. He's had the rights to Doris Kearns Goodwin's book for years and Liam Neeson has been linked - ha »

When Steven Spielberg announced a while back that he was remaking the Jimmy Stewart classic Harvey, most everyone immediately assumed that Tom Hanks, frequently described as the Jimmy Stewart of our era, would jump in to play the lead. The buzz got so strong that Hanks actually had to come out and deny it, and without his frequent collaborator, Spielberg has turned to one of the other most beloved and gifted actors of the moment-- Robert Downey Jr. Buried in today's Variety piece about the progress on Spielberg's Lincoln biopic-- it's happening, he swears!-- there's a brief bit saying that Spielberg is considering Downey Jr. for the role of Elwood P. Dowd, the man who is best friends with an invisible, six-foot-tall rabbit. And, of course Downey Jr. is great for the part, in the way he's great for virtually any part. But if you've ever seen the incredibly »

Steven Spielberg's next project is a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play "Harvey", about a man and his friendship with an invisible six-foot tall rabbit. And now, it seems as though the film might just have a lead actor: Robert Downey Jr.
While many had speculated that the director would cast Tom Hanks for the role, back in August Hanks indicated that he wasn't interested in playing the part because he believed that repeated comparisons between himself and Jimmy Stewart — who starred in the first screen adaptation back in 1950 — would be a detriment to the role.
Variety has now fully confirmed that Hanks is not being considered for the lead and that Downey Jr. is.
The Jonathan Tropper-scripted film that was developed by Fox 2000 is a contemporary story that is said to be much closer in tone to the play than it is to the 1950 film.

Steven Spielberg is not giving up on his Lincoln project!
The director's attempt in launching his Lincoln masterpiece was postponed due to budget and location problems.
And now, Robert Redford is making his own Lincoln film although both movies are going into two different territories. Spielberg's film is reportedly going to focus on the president's dismay over the length and toll of the Civil War. The script is being rewritten by Tony Kushner ("Angels in America").
Meanwhile, Redford's film called "The Conspirator" will focus on a young woman charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln.
Spielberg tells Variety: "We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible."

Now that Tom Hanks is no longer in the running for Steven Spielberg’s remake of the Universal classic Harvey—because he was understandably leery, I hear, of the inevitable comparisons with James Stewart in the original role—who could pull this off? Super-Hollywood master Steven Spielberg has been hopping around with many ideas for a prospective next movie, one of them being Lincoln, which is to have Liam Neeson star as the famous American president. Another idea in the oven is his version of the graphic novel Oldboy, which has already been made into a film by Park Chan-Wook.
But Spielberg has chosen something no one really saw coming for his next project. Starting early next year, he will begin filming on Harvey, a remake of the famous Pulitzer-Prize winning play and film that originally starred Jimmy Stewart. (For those who haven’t seen either, the story is about a man named Elwood P. Dowd who has an unusual relationship with Harvey, a 6 1/2-foot-tall rabbit that only he can see).
Apparently, Spielberg had been antsy to get behind the camera (his latest project, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, »

On Monday we reported that Steven Spielberg is preparing to direct a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play "Harvey", about a man and his friendship with an invisible six-foot tall rabbit.
At the time, we discussed how the logical candidate for the lead role would be Tom Hanks, since the actor is so often identified with Jimmy Stewart, who starred in the 1950 movie adaptation of the play.
And it sounds as though Hanks knows this...and thinks that the whole thing is perhaps a bit too "on the nose," as it were.
Variety has confirmed that Spielberg has, in fact, spoken to Hanks about the role, and that the actor has refused to take part in the new movie, mostly because of his aforementioned comparisons to Jimmy Stewart.
Insiders on the Fox-DreamWorks project said that despite press coverage that has fixated on why Spielberg would remake a film classic, »

When news broke that Steven Spielberg's next directing gig would be a film based on Mary Chase's Harvey play that went on to become a classic film starring Jimmy Stewart, the name that came to everyone's mind in the lead role was Tom Hanks. Not only has Hanks proven to be a Spielberg favorite, his career and personality has been often compared to Stewart's. According to Variety, Hanks has already had a discussion with Spielberg about the role and is not interested. He has not read Jonathan Tropper's script and has no interest in following Stewart's footsteps so closely. The official statement from Fox reads, "Tom Hanks has not read the script and speculation about him and this project has been inaccurate." Now the question becomes, who will Spielberg find to carry Harvey as Stewart did the original without crumbling under the weight of lofty expectations? »

Tom Hanks has reportedly turned down the lead role in Steven Spielberg's remake of Harvey. The director announced the modern-day update of the Mary Chase play, about a man who has a six-foot tall rabbit for an imaginary friend, as his next film earlier this week. The Pulitzer Prize-winning work was previously adapted into a 1950 Jimmy Stewart vehicle and it has been suggested that Hanks was the frontrunner to take on the role for the remake, Variety says. Insiders on the Fox-DreamWorks production have reportedly said that Spielberg (more) »

It was recently reported that Steven Spielberg will next helm a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play "Harvey," about a man and his friendship with an invisible six-foot tall rabbit. At the time, it was assumed that Spielberg would reach out to his buddy Tom Hanks to play the lead role, since Hanks is considered a moder-day Jimmy Stewart, the actor who starred in the 1950 movie adaptation of the play. Variety has now confirmed that Spielberg has spoken to Hanks, who has refused to be part of the new movie, mostly because everyone expects him to take a role like that and that he is so closely identified with Stewart. Apparently Hanks refuses to even take a look at the Jonathan Tropper-penned script, which is closer in tone to the play than it is to the 1950 film. »

It perhaps seemed too easy to connect Tom Hanks to Steven Spielberg's upcoming remake of Harvey, the 1950 James Stewart film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. I don't know that it's as common a refrain these days, but seven to ten years ago Hanks was often described as being a modern Jimmy Stewart. He has a history with Spielberg. So why wouldn't Hanks be a natural fit here?
Turns out, that could be the reason he's not going to be in the movie. Variety says that Hanks apparently met with Spielberg but that "the last thing he would want to do is star in a project so closely identified with [Stewart]. Hanks didn't even read the Jonathan Tropper script."
So now what? I have no idea. »
