Harvey is based on a play written by American playwright and screenwriter Mary Coyle Chase [1907-1981]. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1945.
It showed the audience at the very beginning of the movie that Elwood [James Stewart] was in a world of his own, away from troublesome "worldly" things. He lives only for his friends (real or imaginary) and his family.
A recipe for and egg and onion sandwich can be found here. It actually doesn't sound too bad.
The 2001 film Donnie Darko also features a giant rabbit that only the protagonist can see, but the director, Richard Kelly, claimed that he had never even seen Harvey.
