Tristram Griffin: Well, maybe Sarah would like it there.
Walter of Gurnie: Now, don't talk too lightly about it, Tris,. If we should go to such a place, the chances are all you'll get out of it is that, in the end, you'll be hung by a Mongol instead of a Norman.
Tristram Griffin: Well, if it comes to that, I'd sooner give the pleasure to somebody I don't know than a Norman I hate.
Walter of Gurnie: A far land it is then. I guess this is the beginning.

Powers & Welles are great, but Jack Hawkins steals it!!!, 12 July 2003

great movie. i found it on a video search and was glad to have paid the money for it. i sought after the sucker because i wanted to see Orson Welles. and he was great as a Chinese warrior; seeing his eyes pinned back was interestingly amusing; yet it worked well, he looked the part. it wasn't like seeing John Wayne as a Roman guard or anything. Robert Blake, as Bobby Blake, plays a young tent-boy; tent-boy as opposed to house-boy since through half the movie the main charactors were part of a caravan. Bobby was around the same age as he was in TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, but he has a bigger part in ROSE, although it's not as important. Tyrone Powers is good enough, not as wooden as some of those morbidaly handsome grim reaper looking leading men in those olden days. & the title character, THE BLACK ROSE herself, is very beautiful, a young hot half chinese girl. i was mad at Tyrone for taking such a long time to fall in love with her, since she was into him right away. i was thinking maybe those rumors were true (hehe). seeing Michael Rennie was great, the alien from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. i kept waiting for the big silver robot to follow him down the castle staircase in the beginning during one of his few scenes. this is a neat adventure movie and it's never boring, and keeps you pinned right in. AND, last but not least, Jack Hawkins, who plays a tall proud english marksman archer (bowman), steals the movie. his character you'll root for the most, that i guarentee!!!
