Alex Zamm to Direct Marvin the Martian Movie

22 December 2009 3:34 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Late Friday night, the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Blog reported that director Alex Zamm is attached to helm a live-action Marvin the Martian film. Although Zamm hasn’t directed many films (the direct-to-video Inspector Gadget 2 stands out as the highlight of his career thus far), he is also currently attached to a film version of Hong Kong Phooey.

You heard that right, two classic cartoon characters are being remade for the big screen by one director with mostly direct-to-video experience. Sorry, correction, it’s not just direct-to-video movies. A quick look at IMDb shows that Zamm is also currently in post-production on Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2. Well, if that doesn’t put your mind to rest, I don’t know what will.

In addition to Zamm as director, Marvin the Martian will be written by the team of Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgrove who are also collaborating on »

The 'Other' Lone Ranger Dies

23 September 2009 2:56 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

John Hart, the man who replaced Clayton Moore as TV's wild west hero The Lone Ranger, has died, aged 91.

Hart battled dementia in his latter years and passed away at his home in Rosarito Beach, Mexico on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A California native, Hart launched his Hollywood career in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1938 film The Buccaneer.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he landed the title role in the 1947 TV series Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy and took over from Moore as The Lone Ranger for 52 episodes of the popular family show.

He was the perfect choice for the role - because he worked as a cowboy as a teenager, and had joined the cast of the show to work with a nervous Silver, the Lone Ranger's horse.

Hart gave up the role of The Lone Ranger when Moore returned to the show, but he played the masked hero again in a 1981 episode of The Greatest American Hero and in a 1982 episode of Happy Days.

He also starred in Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans, alongside horror movie icon Lon Chaney Jr. »

retro trailer: ‘The Long Ranger’

29 August 2009 4:23 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Clayton Moore’s Long Ranger... in color! I was writing something the other day (about the use of classical music by movies and TV; I’ll post it soon) and it occurred to me that the Long Ranger is a character we haven’t seen much of in pop culture lately... though there are rumors of a feature film, and there’s also a popular comic book at the moment, which perhaps bodes well for the masked avenger’s return. With Robin Hood-esque characters abounding today, the time certainly seems right for his return. One thing I never understood, though: How could he be a lone ranger if he had a faithful companion? The Lone Ranger is out of print on DVD in Region 1, but used copies are available; it is in print in Region 2. »

I Reckon Westerns Are Coming Back ...

15 June 2009 5:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sorry, Hugh Jackman ... I don't think its musicals that are back. I think it's the clink of spurs, and the fast draw that's enjoying a renaissance. I know, they say William Munny killed it along with Little Bill Daggett (and if so, it certainly went out with one hell of a last line), but then came The Missing, The Proposition, Open Range, 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Appaloosa. There's also been a few that stretched the definition beyond the classic, pistols-at-sunset sort and tackled a more modern definition and locale, such as All the Pretty Horses, Brokeback Mountain, No Country for Old Men, and Australia. Asia has gotten in on the fun with Sukiyaki Western Django and the upcoming The Warrior's Way.

Of course I'm leaving a few of them out (apologies to the Texas Rangers fans out there), and it's »

Pixar Sequels Are Go!

8 June 2009 1:15 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It was apparently top secret info, told in confidence to buyers at the Licencing International Expo 2009 (a Las Vegas trade fair where studios hawk their upcoming wares), but the news that a sequel to Monsters Inc. is in development at Pixar, alongside Cars 2 and Toy Story 3, could not be contained. There are few other details as yet, aside from the fact of original director Pete Docter's involvement. Docter's Up is currently doing rather well on Us screens, and we're intrigued to see what he can do with the same characters a few years on. After all, Pixar's only sequel to date was the utterly ace Toy Story 2, so there's a high bar there to vault over. The same source also reports that Disney / Bruckheimer Western The Lone Ranger has now taken precedence over Pirates of the Caribbean 4, which has been bumped to summer 2012. Bruckheimer’s Lone Ranger May Have A Director

2 May 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto

I remember watching The Lone Ranger on TV, the classic show that was adapted from George W. Trendle’s classic old-time radio show. I still listen to the replays of the old 1930’s radio show today on Sirius Satellite Radio.

“A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty ‘Hi-yo, Silver!’, The Lone Ranger!“

Oh yea. Those are good memories. Listening to the radio show has its own merits. If you’re a regular long time reader of Screen Rant, then you also know that there are efforts afoot to get a modern day version of The Lone Ranger on the silver screen.

In February of 2008, we told you about Jerry Bruckheimer looking to redo The Lone Ranger. Like we said then, with a Disney backed Bruckheimer behind the lens, The Lone Ranger »

Mike Newell in Talks to Direct The Long Ranger

1 May 2009 11:16 AM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Twitter is just now becoming the “next big thing” and I’m already bored of it.  It’s essentially text messaging on a website.  But just like MySpace, the PR people and marketing majors are already plugging away before it disappears in a few months.  Unfortunately this means news comes in 140 words or less for a while.

The latest “tweetscoop” is from Production Weekly, which reveals that Mike Newell is in talks to direct Disney’s The Lone Ranger.  Already attached to the project are producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp playing the character Tonto.

Newell is best known for directing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but he’s made some other pretty good movies like Donnie Brasco, which starred Depp.  He’s currently in post-production on Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

It’s still early in the process, so no story details have »

Newell previously directed "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and is currently hard at work on "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice. 'Prince of Persia' Director Up For 'Lone Ranger'

1 May 2009 12:54 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If it stands up, there's a lot of sense in hiring Mike Newell to direct The Lone Ranger. He's directed a Harry Potter movie and recently shot next summer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for Jerry Bruckheimer, and Bruckheimer is also leading the charge for Lone Ranger. In short, he's got experience as a do-what-the-producer-wants filmmaker on massive movies.

That's not to say he's in any way deficient as a director, just that he works very well for producers with big aims. That's not an easy trait to find, because directors so often want to do things their own ways. Newell's also really versatile - Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral - so I think he can be relied upon to give us the most crowd-pleasing Lone Ranger that the script allows.

'Prince of Persia' Helmer Circles Around 'The Lone Ranger'

1 May 2009 12:36 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

After helming "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time", Mike Newell could tackle yet another Jerry Bruckheimer-produced movie, "The Lone Ranger". The possibility was suggested by Production Weekly, which mentioned that the director "is in talks" to direct the big screen adaptation of the popular masked Texas ranger.

Of the report posted on its Twitter page Thursday, April 30, Production Weekly wrote, "Mike Newell is in talks to direct Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott's big screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" at Disney." If Newell is indeed joining the production team of the action adventure movie, the "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" director will once again team up with his "Donnie Brasco" star Johnny Depp, who is set to star as Tonto.

Adapted from George W. Trendle's classic old-time radio and early television show of the same name, "The Lone Ranger" resolves around a masked Texas Ranger who »

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film and Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) are writing the screenplay. The title character is a masked Texas Ranger in the American Old West, who gallops about righting injustices with the aid of his clever, laconic American Indian sidekick, Tonto. Departing on his horse Silver, the Ranger would famously say “Hi-yo, Silver, away!” as the horse galloped toward the setting sun. I have done my best to avoid reporting on Production Weekly's 140-characters-or-less Twitters announcing new project updates but their latest seemed interesting enough as they report, "Mike Newell is in talks to direct Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott's big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger at Disney." The project gained steam back in September 2008 when it was announced Johnny Depp would be playing Tonto in the filmed adaptation of the late '40s and into the '50s television show and a lone surviving Texas Ranger who was nursed back to health by the Native American Tonto who rides with him, on Silver and Scout, throughout the West, doing good while living off a silver mine which supplies him with income and bullets.
