Yes. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a 1927 novel by B. Traven, whose true identity is unknown.

Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) gets killed by the bandits. The bandits think he's just selling hides. They don't know that there's gold in the bags. They think it's sand. They cut open all the bags, the gold spills out, and gets blown away by a big wind. Later, Howard (Walter Huston) is reunited with the wounded Curtin (Tim Holt). They make it back to the village, where the Federales have caught the bandits and execute them. After questioning several town people, Howard and Curtin find out what happened with Dobbs and where the bandits left the bags with the gold. They find the bags cut open and no trace of the gold. Howard starts laughing uncontrollably, saying that after all that hard work, the gold ended up back where it came from. Finally, Curtin can appreciate the irony of the situation as well and starts laughing along.

Bogie didn't always play the good guy. In Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), he plays a crooked lawyer. He's the mentally unstable captain of the Caine in The Caine Mutiny (1954).
