Implausible but well-done soap opera, 27 April 1999

Merle Oberon gives one of her best performances as a beautiful young Frenchwoman abandoned by her husband (with their daughter in tow) because of malicious gossip her husband overhears. She is reunited with them by a twist of fate ten years later, but can she bring her family back together? This is a first class soaper with strong performances by all. Claude Rains also stars as her partner in a nightclub act. He seems woefully underused in this film, but his patrician presence gives the film the class that it needs in order to keep it from being a maudlin woman's picture. Unusual, implausible, but watchable nonetheless, especially if you are a fan of soap operas.
