As the film opens the doctors at an asylum await the arrival of a new Director and when Dr. Anthony Edwardes (Gregory Peck) many are surprised at the youth of the acclaimed researched and writer. There seems to be an especially strong attraction between Dr. Constance Peterson (Ingrid Bergman) and the new director but when she draws a shape on the white tablecloth with a fork the new doctor reacts with an unusual anger. Later that night, unable to sleep Constance goes to Edwardes' room where he kisses her but reacts suspiciously to her white robe, and when one of the patients needs immediate surgery and Edwardes collapses Constance is sure he is an imposter and possibly psychotic. Edwardes confesses to Constance that he can only remember his initials of his real name which are J. B., but he remembers going on a ski trip with the real Dr. Edwardes and coming back alone so he concludes that the real Edwardes is dead and he took on his identity until his own returned. J. B. runs away to New York and Constance chases him down and brings him to the home of her former teacher and mentor Dr. Alex Brulov (Michael Chekhov) and they analyze his fantastical memories of the ski trip he took with the real Dr. Edwardes. Deciding to trigger the core memories J. B. has, Constance takes him to a ski resort to reconstruct the activity leading up to the disappearance of Dr. Edwardes. When the real identity of J. B. comes out, John Ballantine, he realizes the full depth of his guilt but the Police arrest him and he is convicted of the murder of the dead Dr. Edwardes, but Constance realizes that a contact from the asylum holds the key to the mystery surrounding the murder of the doctor and the amnesiac conditions of John Ballantine and she tries against all odds to free the man she has grown to love.
