Updated (1940s style) version of operetta has disappeared from view...WHY?, 22 April 2001
Author: Neil Doyle from U.S.A.

For years I've been waiting for this Dennis Morgan-Irene Manning version of 'The Desert Song' (filmed in beautiful technicolor) to be released either to cable TV or VHS. When Turner Classic Movies offered a recap of his work, they failed to show 'The Desert Song'. It's one of his finest roles, giving him the chance to sing some of the great Romberg songs. The plot is updated to weave in the theme of Nazi menace. Morgan is a mild-mannered nightclub singer who is really the leader of the Riffs opposing Nazi plans to construct a new railroad in North Africa. The singer at the club is played by the lovely Irene Manning, a largely forgotten actress today who had a fine singing voice. Victor Francen, Bruce Cabot and Lynn Overman have the chief supporting roles. For copyright reasons unknown to me, this film has been withheld from public domain or any kind of release to video. A shame for it seemed quite a bit more convincing than the later remake with Kathryn Grayson and Gordon MacRae.
