When I sat down to watch "Revolt of the Zombies", I have to admit I wasn't expecting much. I thought it was going to be another poorly made and dull low budget offering from the 1940's. Much to my surprise however, "Revolt of the Zombies" is actually a well shot, creepy and above all fun little mad scientist zombie movie featuring the always cool looking John Carradine that doesn't get much attention now a days, like so many other films from the 1940's.
After Lilia Von Altermann (Veda Ann Borg) dies mysteriously, her suspicious friends and family and family suspect her husband Max (Carridain) murdered her. Her brother Scott Wellington (Mauritz Hugo) and detective Larry Adams (Robert Lowery) go to the estate in Louisiana to see what lead to her death. While there they discover that not only did her husband kill her, he turned her into a zombie and is attempting to build an army of invincible zombies to take over the world.
"Revolt of the Zombies" is a surprisingly creepy little film. John Carradine gives a fine performance as Dr. Altermann and the score is pretty spooky. In addition, it's a well shot film. The black and white looks great and gives the film a surrealist feel. Also, it has a very cool plot. The zombies are great as well. Also, with a runtime of just over an hour, this is an ideal way to kill a little bit of time. Now this is not a perfect film, it has a bit too much comic relief, but other than that this is a fine film.
