(1941) Gary Cooper won his first Academy Award for Best Actor playing Alvin York, the acclaimed hero of World War I, in Howard Hawks' acclaimed drama. York hand-picked Cooper to play him in the paean to patriotism that came in the wake of America's entry into World War II. The film was nominated for a total 11 Oscars. Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Margaret Wycherly, and Ward Bond co-star.
