Typical grade B adventure yarn set in 1812 Wartime, 8 January 2001
4/10

This is standard Grade B action filming, based on Kenneth Roberts' novel, and set in 1812 wartime. A Maine merchant ship enroute from China is attacked by a British gunboat, killing the captain. Seems the War of 1812 was declared while the vessel was at sea and they never knew about. The captain's daughter takes over the ship and vows revenge on the British. Of course she sides with the oily and secretly nasty Bruce Cabot in order to make her love from childhood, Victor Mature, jealous. There's betrayals, doublecrosses, sword fights, ships with cannons booming - all the usual action stuff. It's okay but unremarkable. The Sound was justly nominated for an Oscar but the marvellous musical score by Phil Ohman also deserved a nod. Look for Alan Ladd unbilled as Newton, incredibly beautiful and dynamic. Good for action buffs but in no way outstanding.
