Fashion fix: Ugg Adirondack Boots from The Twilight Saga: New Moon

18 November 2009 2:46 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

That Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) one smart cookie. She cruises through her academic studies (winning the Golden Onion prize in biology class, no less), loves her classic literature (such as Wuthering Heights) and is the only girl in decades to charm immortal heartthrob Edward (Robert Pattinson). Not bad going! She also realises pretty quickly that the clothes she wore back in sunny Phoenix, Arizona aren’t going to cut it now that she’s moved to rainy Forks, and adapts her wardrobe for the daily onslaught of drizzle. And standing out among these winter warmers are the Ugg Adirondack boots she dons in both Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which we just can’t get enough of! »

Stephenie Meyer turns rainy little Forks – and the world – into a Twilight zone

13 November 2009 11:10 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

For millions of teenagers around the globe, next Friday is the most exciting day of the year: New Moon, the second film in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga about a sexy vampire, debuts in UK cinemas.

In less than four years, Meyer, a Mormon mother of three from Arizona, has become one of the world's bestselling authors, despite Stephen King saying she "can't write".

Every two seconds this year, someone in the UK has bought one of her books. Since her first novel, Twilight, was plucked out of an agent's slush pile and published in 2005, Meyer has sold more than 85m copies worldwide. Almost 5m of those were snapped up in the UK.

Twilight the film, released last year, took £11m in the UK, and its soundtrack sold more than 200,000 copies. If advance ticket sales are anything to go by, New Moon, the second book in the four-strong saga to be filmed, »

England gets Collison, Scotland gets car-crash telly

10 November 2009 6:34 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Scots saw the ads and read all the hype about Collision but got The Greatest Scot instead

The English can whine about the Barnett formula all they want – but they don't know how lucky they are. Last night while English audiences being treated to the first episode of the much hyped and rather exciting-looking Collision, Scottish audiences were forcefed The Greatest Scot – part one of a week-long examination of championed Scottish inventors, warriors and celebrities (though oddly, Dougie Henshall, the Scottish star of Collision, did not made the shortlist).

Scottish viewers have become used to cash-strapped Stv opting out of high-profile, high-quality drama in preference for a homespun piece of hokum – I've discussed the issue on this blog before – but this swap felt like a particularly cruel example of cultural exclusion. Scots are well aware of Collision – we've read numerous breathless previews and noted the number of times the show »

Johnny Depp Might Be 'The Tourist'

4 November 2009 6:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sony's thriller The Tourist just keeps sending its talent packing. Originally set to be a vehicle for Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron, it shifted gears last month and was re-cast with Angelina Jolie and Sam Worthington. But once again, The Tourist finds itself without travel arrangements for a male lead as Variety reports that Worthington is out due to "creative disagreements" and Johnny Depp is in.

Depp is still in talks to play the hapless American tourist, and with the way this film is going, one can't assume it's finalized. But if it is, it might just be the casting coup of 2010. A Depp-Jolie pair-up has been something dreamed about by a lot of producers and studios over the years. Once upon a time, rumor even had them attached to play Cathy and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. People want to see them having onscreen sex. It'd be the hottest thing since ... well, »

Drag Me to Hell

Girl says no to woman at the bank, and soon falls under the wrath of the woman's witchy gypsy ways. It sounds like you're regular ol' horror movie, but it's also Sam Raimi's return to the genre. I wasn't the biggest fan of the film, but considering the fact that most of the people I know loved it, I'll defer to them. In his review, Peter Martin said: "Raimi has made a joyful romp through his personal horror playground and come up with a very entertaining horror-comedy that gets back to the basics." Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

TV Review: The Vampire Diaries 1.2 “The Night of the Comet”

18 September 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

It looks like I may be eating my words before the fall television season is over. The Vampire Diaries episode 1.2, “The Night of the Comet”, aired on The CW last night, and much to my dismay there was a noticeable decline in the quality of the episode’s dialogue as compared to that of the series’ pilot. We are already well aware that the scenes in which Elena writes in her diary, with the obligatory voiceover by Nina Dobrev (Elena), are pretty hokey, but these sequences are acceptably contrived given the fact that the show is called The Vampire Diaries. Granted the diary sequences could benefit from some close-up shots of what Elena is actually writing rather than a series of wide establishing shots of Elena sitting in her room as she scribbles away, but this is The CW, not HBO.

My disbelief over the perceptible shift in dialogue of »

Audrina Patridge, Shel Silverstein And 'District 9' Hate Around The Blogosphere

10 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

-- Here's a nice, little, admittedly objective runthrough of the 25 best book-to-film adaptations on record. The picks are culled from across cinema's history, so you've got the 1939 adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" (at number 2) alongside the post-2000 adaptation of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (number 25). I have to say though, I'm terribly disappointed that the "Harry Potter" series (number 22) ranks higher than "Rings," and that Terry Gilliam's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is conspicuously absent. (Telegraph)

-- Speaking of adaptations, the blog portal for Spike Jonze's upcoming adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are" continues to dish out the goods. Today there are some vintage clips featuring poet/musician Shel Silverstein; an animated short set to his reading of "The Giving Tree" and a clip of him live and in person on "The Johnny Cash Show." What are the 25 Best Book to Film Adaptations?

10 September 2009 4:46 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will. Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22. Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books. »

Classic Literature Turned 'Twilight'

3 September 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Well, it's not like anyone would be mistaking Stephanie Meyers' Twilight Saga with one of English literature's greatest classics, but I guess we should have seen this coming. Lately there have been all sorts of Twilight tie-ins that you would never have thought possible, and the latest is courtesy of HarperCollins who have printed new editions of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights with Twilight-inspired cover art.

Now the Cullen-devoted probably already know that Brontë's romance was the book of choice for Edward and Bella, though one edition even goes so far as to remind you of that fact on the cover. Frankly, the Heights mention adds a whole new layer of creepy to Bella and Edward's relationship. There is some pretty messed up stuff going on in Brontë's book, and the twisted relationship between sort-of siblings Cathy and Heathcliff was the blueprint for every romantic bad boy to come after it. »

'Twilight in Forks' documentary trailer: Bored now

3 September 2009 6:09 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Has the first teaser for the Oct. 15 straight-to-dvd documentary release Twilight in Forks — The Saga of the Real Town left anyone else underwhelmed? The idea of focusing a camera on Forks, Wash., the rainiest city in America and the setting for Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, is a good one. But the producers should have come out swinging with more than a local woman saying she doesn't know any vampires and an Alice Cullen wannabe. Of course, that's what we want to see: That some Forks citizens (presumably) hate their town's sudden fame and tourism, while others embrace it. But this teaser just confirms that the assumed dichotomy exists. (Also that director Catherine Hardwicke did a wonderful job recreating Forks' trees for the Twilight movie, which shot primarily in Portland, Ore.) The footage doesn't surprise or shock. Is it enough to make you pre-order, or will you hold out for more? »

Fassbender's Fears Over Inglourious Role

1 September 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Fassbender was convinced he'd wrecked his chance to appear in Inglourious Basterds after clashing with director Quentin Tarantino during his audition.

The actor spent hours practising for the role of Colonel Hans Landa in the World War II drama, and was dismayed when he arrived at his tryout only for Tarantino to ask him to read a different part.

The Pulp Fiction director even had to step in during the audition and give the actor some tips for the role of Lieutenant Archie Hicox - and Fassbender admits he thought he'd blown his big chance.

He says, "I was really gunning for the Landa part, to be honest. I can't really separate these two characters, Landa and Hicox; I'm going to have to throw all my eggs into the Landa basket. So I did about 25 hours' work on Landa, learning French and German accents."

But when Fassbender arrived at the audition, Tarantino was wary of casting him as a German officer because one of his biggest previous roles was as Englishman Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.

He adds, "When I got to the audition in Berlin, Quentin and I chatted for a bit. Then he said, 'Okay, let's take a look at Hicox.' I was like, 'What about Landa?' And he goes, 'Well, I cast my Landa on Tuesday.' 'Are you sure?' 'Yeah, I'm sure, man.' Then there was a pause, and he goes, 'Look, man, any guy that gets cast as Heathcliff is not f**king German enough to play my Landa, alright?' And I thought, 'I'm not going to argue with Quentin Tarantino about who he wants to cast, that's for sure.'"

After reading the part, Fassbender was advised by Tarantino not to play it "like Michael Caine" - and the actor was convinced he had failed the test: "I thought I'd made a balls of the audition, to be honest, and I was totally depressed when I left."

Fassbender was eventually cast as Hicox, while Austrian actor Christoph Waltz scored the role of Landa. »

Oscar Nominees To Number 10 Next Year

25 June 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the annual Oscar awards, touched off an industry-wide controversy Wednesday when it announced that it is doubling the number of nominees for Best Picture to 10. Although the announcement came as a surprise to many in Hollywood, Academy President Sid Ganis told the Wall Street Journal, "This wasn't a knee-jerk decision. ... We just felt we need to expand the possibilities to allow more genres." He noted that in the 1930s and '40s, the Academy routinely nominated 10 or even 12 movies a year for Best Picture. In 1939 the 10 nominees included the classics Dark Victory, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Love Affair, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights, and -- the winner -- Gone With the Wind. But one studio executive told the Hollywood Reporter "This likely means more filmmakers will want to see their movies open late in the year so they can still be in release during the crucial period between nominations [February 2] and the actual telecast [March 7]. It's simply going to clog up the distribution pipeline or mean we have to consider re-releasing one title or another. Don't even mention what it might do to DVD campaigns." Still, the move is likely to redound to the benefit of ABC, the network that broadcasts the awards ceremony. The Los Angeles Times said that it was spurred by what it called "the Marion Cotillard effect," referring to the all-but-unknown French actress who won last year's Best Actress award for her performance in the art-house release, La Vie en Rose. The Academy's action appears to ensure that at least a few hit films would be represented among its best-picture nominees. "Movies that have been nominated in recent years have been critically acclaimed but many were too obscure for the mainstream moviegoer," Shari Anne Brill, director of audience analysis for the ad-buying firm Carat, told the Times. And Geri Wang, ABC senior vice president for primetime sales, told the newspaper, "It's going to offer a broader palette of films being considered, and that should increase the interest in the show. Viewers, and the industry, will want to watch and root for their favorite films." »

Arterton Joins Westwick in ‘Wuthering Heights’ Death Match

Fresh off the discussion being generated by Landon Palmer's latest Book v. Movie installment of Culture Warrior, there's this wonderful little news item about a Bond girl and a Gossip Girl (guy) joining up for a new adaptation of the enduring classic "Wuthering Heights." Of course, the Bond girl is Gemma Arterton, who seems to be getting a steady amount of work coming off that Quantum of Solace role, and the Gossip Girl is Ed Westwick, who will probably have to put that date-rape charm away to play Heathcliff. For those keeping score, it means that they've found replacements for Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman who were being announced in the roles almost exactly a year ago. Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has found a director in Peter Webber - the man who brought the world The Girl with the Pearl Earring and several brilliant episodes of "Six Feet Under."
