Box sets for Christmas | Gift ideas

28 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Stumped for what to buy your friends and family this year? Forget the socks and chocs and bubble bath – our critics have chosen 40 of the best music, film and TV box sets

Pop by Kitty Empire

1 The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set (Parlophone)

At £145, the Beatles box set probably costs roughly what a small car did in the early 1960s. But the startling detail on these CDs will repay the outlay for Beatles nerds and mere mortals alike. Its sister release, The Beatles in Mono – 1960s scooter prices, at a guess – is even more desirable, audiophiles reckon.

2 Kraftwerk The Catalogue (Mute/Emi)

Eight albums by the electronic Beatles, dating from 1974's Autobahn, all gleamingly remastered. Costing considerably less than one of Ralf Hütter's beloved bicycles, this is the master text of most electronic genres – electro, techno, even hip-hop – today.

Jose Gives Thanks.

26 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jose here.

Although we don't have anything resembling Thanksgiving in my culture (Penélope Cruz was talking about that on Letterman the other day) I have a special place in my heart (and stomach) for turkey, gravy and pumpkin pie.

I also feel very grateful for the following: Technicolor, Woody Allen banter, Judy Garland's smile, the millisecond of suspense between normal talking and spontaneous singing in the musicals, post-Volver Penélope, the Truffaut/Hitchcock book, still being thrilled by the sepia-to-color switch in The Wizard of Oz, Nino Rota and La Strada, Julia Roberts' laugh, Scarlett and Rhett, Bette Davis' eyes, Ingrid Bergman's Italian phase, Jett Rink, Jacques Tourneur horror flicks, The Blob, pre-supermom Gwyneth, Wall-e, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Anne Hathaway at award shows, Brando as Kowalski, Meryl!, Gene Kelly's butt, subtitles...

Media Theatre's Wizard Of Oz Plays Through 1/10/2010

25 November 2009 3:50 PM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

"The Wizard of Oz", L. Frank Baum's family friendly fantasy in which a young Dorothy travels over the rainbow after a twister hits her Uncle's farm, is one of the most popular stories of all time due to the iconic film version. While the film celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the stage version of the musical based on the movie claims The Media Theatre stage as its home this holiday season (Nov. 24, 2009-Jan. 10, 2010).

The Media Theatre will produce The Royal Shakespeare Company's version of the musical, which includes all of the well-known songs from the film ("Over the Rainbow", "If I Only Had A Brain", "Follow The Yellow Brick Road") and a number cut from the original movie ("Jitterbug"). Temple University's Peter Reynolds, who directed Media's popular "Altar Boyz" last season, will take the helm for "Oz".

DVD Review: Breathtaking 5-Disc Gift Set For ‘Gone With the Wind’

25 November 2009 10:48 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – If local news reports are to be believed, nearly everyone reading this will go holiday shopping sometime during the upcoming weekend. To those of you that are considering a DVD giftset purchase like the recent release of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Christmas Vacation,” or even “Mamma Mia!,” you couldn’t do much better than the breathtaking five-disc release marking the 70th anniversary of “Gone With the Wind”.

The lavishly-packaged new collector’s edition giftset of “Gone With the Wind” is one of those overwhelming releases in which the film itself practically becomes an afterthought to the collectibles and special features. Honestly, if you haven’t seen “Gone With the Wind,” it’s required viewing for the history of film. One of the most beloved movies ever made, even if you don’t love it (and I’ll admit that it’s not a personal favorite of mine like it »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Mamma Mia! The Movie’ Given Gift Set Treatment

24 November 2009 7:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Blu-Ray and DVD collectors. Every holiday season, studios pull out their most beloved films, polish up the picture, maybe add a special feature or two, and usually throw in a few collectibles for a gift set. Recent gift set releases include limited edition boxes for “Gone With the Wind,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Christmas Vacation”. The gleefully campy “Mamma Mia! The Movie” seems like a perfect fit and “The Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! More Gift Set” should make fans of the movie happy but is clearly the lowest rung on the ladder when it comes to these season releases.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Before we even get to the movie, what qualifies as a gift set? With recent releases including such unusual items as a watch (“Wizard of Oz”) and fake snow (“Christmas Vacation”), don’t you think a film as weird as “Mamma Mia! »

1999: A Look Back

23 November 2009 6:36 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Every once in a while, we hit upon a milestone year in cinema with 1939 remaining the gold standard, as that year saw the release of such timeless classics as Gone With The Wind, The Wizard Of Oz, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and Goodbye Mr. Chips. Another notable year would be 1967, with Bonnie & Clyde, In The Heat Of The Night, The Graduate & Guess Who.S Coming To Dinner. More recently, I.d say that 1999 was a phenomenal year in cinema. It saw the release of Fight Club,... »

Going through the looking glass with Syfy's Alice

20 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The producers of Tin Man, Syfy's dark and splashy spin on The Wizard of Oz, are back with Alice, a twisted take on Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In a conference call with reporters, Alice director Nick Willing and star Caterina Scorsone talked flying flamingos, Tweedledee and Tweedledum's torture tactics, and what Wonderland would look like 150 years after Alice's original adventure.

We'll have an advance review of Alice next week, but for now you can head after the jump for an inside look at the miniseries, premiering December 6 on Syfy. Spoilers follow.

The view: John Woo's departure from Hollywood is a loss to us all

20 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Once hailed as the man to shake up Hollywood, the maestro of dizzying, exquisitely choreographed action movies has returned to the far east

Let's say from the start that the life of a major league film-maker, with a thriving career in several corners of the globe, is not one to be sniffed at. That said, it's hard not to feel some small twinge of fellow feeling for John Woo, Hong Kong's onetime bullet-spraying master of the action genre. You may not have heard his name for some time but he was, in the early years of this soon to be ex-decade, still being spoken of as the dominant force of the film industry's future. "The most influential director making movies today," The New York Times called him back in 2002, adding, "Woo embodies the globalising forces that have shaped motion pictures in the last two decades."

Gone With The Wind – 70th Anniversary Edition DVD

18 November 2009 10:06 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

One of the best, most beloved films ever is now available on DVD with three release options for every collector. Gone with the Wind is in stores now, and you can enjoy the remastered classic in Blu-Ray Collector's Edition, Standard Collector's Edition, or 2-disc Anniversary Edition. While the standard DVD remaster looks great, and the commentary track by historian Rudy Behlmer is a wonderful trip through this amazing film, it's hard to imagine not opting upwards for one of the bigger sets. Just as was the case with the recent release of The Wizard of Oz, the remaster is wonderful work, but the special edition releases are filled with amazing bonuses that you don't want to pass up. »

Blu-ray Review: Gone With the Wind (70th Anniversary)

17 November 2009 2:04 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Warner Home Video An immaculate and beautiful presentation wrapped in a red velvet box, Warner Home Video's 70th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Gone With the Wind is a must for any avid film fan or Gone With the Wind fanatic, and I can only assume all of us know one or more of the latter and are obviously all members of the former. Not only is the packaged presentation some of the best I have seen from the studio, the film itself has never looked better and I can't imagine it ever will, at least not on home video.

When it comes to Blu-ray high-definition we are really getting down to the true essence of today's films and when we're talking about restoring a 70-year-old film onto the new media, one of my primary concerns was the expectation of too much grain, primarily in the lavish colors. Fortunately »

Fantastic Finian's Rainbow and Mr. Fox

16 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

During intermission at a recent performance of Finian's Rainbow, I looked into the orchestra pit to find a musician, Wayne Goodman, anticipating Act II as much as I was. Marvelling at Burton Lane's great songs, including such classics as "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" "Look to the Rainbow," and "Old Devil Moon," the trombonist pointed out that this 1947 show with a leprechaun, crock of gold, and three wishes had real magic in the prescient lyrics by Yip Harburg and book by Harburg and Fred Saidy. Yip Harburg, who also wrote The Wizard of Oz with its signature "Over the Rainbow," influenced generations of musicals. So why aren't we talking about Yip Harburg the way we talk about the Gershwins or Irving Berlin? That question may remain a mystery, even as we are awed by this outstanding late '40's... »

The Wizard of Oz Returns to the Big Screen

There are classic movies and there are enduring tales of timeless adventure; you could fill a dozen multiplexes with critically acclaimed films but often the most perfect films are relegated to DVD shelves and (if we’re lucky) a Blu-ray restoration.

Films were meant to be seen on the big screen and now the BFI are giving UK readers the chance to see one of the most magical and sublime fantasies ever to charm the ruby slippers from our feet.

The Wizard of Oz is a film so enthralling and beautiful it will endure as long as human beings have eyes, and now it is being shown across the country complete with a crystal clear digital restoration, so expect vivid witchy greens and the rubiest slippers you’ve ever seen, as well as well as the numerous lions, and tigers and bears (you know the rest).

Can I Interest You in a Legendary Movie Studio? MGM Goes Up for Sale

12 November 2009 9:54 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

MGM, the studio of The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Singin’ in the Rain and many other classic films, is expected to be headed to the auction block where its library and logo may go to the highest bidder.  The financially troubled company will manage to hold on to Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of The Hobbit, but it’s pretty much anything goes for the 85-year-old company.  Hit the jump for more about who would want to own a constantly growling lion.

According to Variety, several sources are reporting that they expect MGM to be auctioned off into oblivion in the next several weeks.  To give you an idea of what this means, one studio could buy MGM’s 4,000+ titles but another buyer could purchase the logo.  Now I’m no fancy-shmancy lawyer, but from what I think I can understand but probably don’t, »

Debt-ridden MGM could be sold

The studio with the famous lion logo and library of James Bond films appears to be headed for the auction block to recoup some $3.7bn in debt

The MGM lion, a star of cinema since the 1920s, may be looking for a new home amid rumours that the studio is to be sold off in the Hollywood equivalent of a fire sale. Reportedly saddled with debts totalling $3.7bn (£2.2bn), the company looks likely to sell its MGM and United Artists libraries to the highest bidder in the next few weeks.

Variety suggests that the studio's film archive, which includes the lucrative James Bond adventures, may be snapped up by a major company such as Time-Warner. The famous logo featuring Leo the lion could well be auctioned off separately. Either way, it appears that the heyday of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is officially over.
