Chicago – Does the fact that “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is receiving a lavish 20th anniversary edition Blu-Ray release make anyone else feel old? Just me? Whether you’re old enough to remember the first “Vacation” or young enough to know Chevy Chase as “that old guy on Community,” this is a lavish collector’s set for a great holiday film timed for holiday shopping.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Warner Home Video has begun an interesting trend of making Blu-Ray sets for their most beloved films that almost feel more about the collectibles than the movie itself. In some cases (“Blade Runner: The Final Cut,” “The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition”), the disc itself includes enough bonus material and a lovingly remastered picture that the collectibles appropriately feel like a companion instead of the main draw. Such is not the case with the set for “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, »

Well, it's that time of the year again -- time to wait until the very last minute to buy presents for your loved ones in order to solidify the fact that you'll be waiting on insanely long lines next to people who don't shower and like to scream at their misbehaving kids about once every 10 seconds. Or at least that's what I'll be doing this year. One thing I always look forward to, though, is heading out on a cold winter's night to purchase a way-too-expensive Christmas tree for my living room ... and then decorating it while consuming some nice tasty beverages that may or may not be of the alcoholic variety.
But when you're a movie geek like me, you want to decorate that tree with tons of really random movie references so that your family can come over and be all like, "Um, is that the car from Ghostbusters hanging on your tree? »

Up I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details.
Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. Monsters, Inc. Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. »

Harmonica virtuoso Norton Buffalo passed away last Friday, October 30, losing his brief battle with stage four metastasized lung cancer. Buffalo, who was diagnosed with the disease in September, performed throughout this summer, as he’d done for over 30 years, as a member of the Steve Miller Band, where he provided harp, vocal, and percussion. Miller would introduce him as his "partner in harmony."
Norton Buffalo was born in Oakland, CA to musically inclined parents -- his mother a nightclub singer, his father a harmonica player, and his great uncle an Academy Award-winning composer of music for the film The Wizard of Oz.

Syfy has become known not just for cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks but also remakes, or "reimaginings," of several classic films and shows. They had Children of the Corn recently, they had Tin Man (a modern take on The Wizard of Oz), and they have an Alien Nation remake in the works (not to mention Quantum Leap).
They're also doing Alice, which is their take on Alice in Wonderland. Here's the trailer. It premieres December 6.

Note: The following essay, which is obviously being published months after the release of Inglourious Basterds, was written for a literary criticism class that explores theory behind literary criticism and focuses on analyzing textual works from a variety of perspectives. This assignment involved using these tools of literature to explore a work outside of the written word — I chose Inglourious Basterds. I thought I’d share it in order to show just how relevant Basterds is to the craft as a whole, so enjoy it!
To argue that filmed media such as motion pictures and television shows should not be judged or viewed in the same critical light as a piece of literature is overlooking an essential facet of this media. Film is rooted in the written word, and every event in motion is sparked by a screenplay that could easily merit a critical analysis of form, depth, and “literariness. »

There was talk earlier this year that it wasn't in the studios' best interest to continue to release classic films on DVD/Blu-ray as the demand for them was dwindling and the cost of restoration was climbing. The article in question even quotes Warner Home Video senior vice president George Feltenstein saying "most of the studios have pretty much said 'Screw it, we're out of here, we're not going to do this.'" Strangely enough, it just so happens Warner Home Video is the home entertainment studio releasing the very first Alfred Hitchcock film on Blu-ray, 50 years after its theatrical release with a restoration price tag I have read cost upwards of $1 million. Perhaps studios are slowing down the release of their classic films, but with Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz, the upcoming release of Gone With the Wind and this release of North by Northwest »

Never mind monster movies. You know what scared me as a kid? The Wizard of Oz! All those weird flying monkeys and munchkins! I still wake up in cold sweats because of The Lollypop Guild! Sorry, I know the new thriller YellowBrickRoad has nothing to do with Oz. But damn it, I needed to vent!
Written and directed by Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton, YellowBrickRoad stars Cassidy Freeman, Clark Freeman, Anessa Ramsey, Lee Wilkof, Laura Heisler, and Alex Draper.
Check out the synopsis and trailer below.
Synopsis
One morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No one knows why.

Recycled Film Experience! I wrote some of this in advance -- years in advance in fact -- to free up time to enjoy this costume crazed holiday. I originally published this list in 2005, but I've tweaked it some. Plus, not all of you were around in 2005. Herewith, the top 12 movies that remind me of Halloween. It's a top ten list and it's not even Tuesday. I'm so generous.
12 The Batman franchise (1989-2008)
In 1997 I went out Halloween clubbing as the Uma version of Poison Ivy. Whenever you dress up as a movie character the year the movie comes out, you'll have competition. There was another Poison Ivy there but I buried her, I promise. I had the horns and all the details, see. It was the longest I ever spent getting ready for Halloween (which is saying something): glue guns, orange wigs, fake foliage, you name it. I don't try as hard anymore. »

Wouldn't it be cool if, instead of producing so many remakes, more Hollywood studios would simply consider re-releasing classic films for limited theatrical runs? I suppose they might not stand to make as much money from a re-release of a movie that doesn't have any of today's hot young stars in it, but on the other hand, it wouldn't cost them that much money either. We've seen a few examples of this over the past few years (The Wizard of Oz [1] and A Nightmare on Elm Street [2], for example), but most of the time it's only for one or two nights. Well, now here's some cool news about a company that's trying to revive the concept of midnight movies with the help of Sam Raimi's very first flick The Evil Dead. According to a press release from Grindhouse Releasing [3], they will be bringing The Evil Dead back to the »

If there is one thing Hollywood likes, it's a comeback story, and no one seems more poised for that right now than writer-director Troy Duffy. Politics may have sunk his The Boondock Saints initially, but word of mouth and DVD sales proved co-star Billy Connolly right when he said, "The kids will find it! It's rock 'n' roll!"
Now the saints have been resurrected in a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. In honor of this achievement, we look at six movies that surprisingly failed in theaters in Back from the Dead: Movie Classics that Began as Box-Office Bombs.

Chicago – Timed to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” and its accompanying Blu-Ray collector’s set, the world created by Frank L. Baum is getting its own Nintendo DS role-playing game. Sort of. “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road” uses elements of both what we know and love about Oz and what gamers enjoy about RPGs to make an odd hybrid that could appeal to both genre newcomers and diehard fans.
The elements of “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road” that stick to the books and movie are mostly in the characters and some of the settings. The player, naturally, starts in the role of Dorothy, as she is whisked from her home in Kansas and deposited on the Yellow Brick Road with her little dog too.

5. Edward Scissorhands (1990): I would love to see how something like Edward Scissorhands would go over in today’s society. Clearly, if the school he’d be attending observed any of today’s weapon policies, he’d be expelled instantly and have at least 4 interviews on news programs and talk shows before the week was over about how the institution is “denying his fundamental right to express himself.” Edward Scissorhands reminds me a lot of many of the movies that came out in the late 80s, up until 1990. The first trailer has surfaced for Green Zone, an action-adventure adaptation of Imperial Life in the Emerald City. No, nothing to do with The Wizard of Oz. This Emerald City is an award-winning non-fiction account of America's misadventures in Iraq's American-controlled international zone. A darkly comic, often absurdist tale reminiscent of Catch 22, it would seem to lend itself to an interpretation heavy on the irony, perhaps along the lines of The Men Who Stare at Goats.
Not so much, from the look of this trailer for Green Zone, which seems headed off more in the direction of The Bourne Identity and its progeny. With Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass at the helm and Matt Damon headlining, I suppose this should come as no big surprise. What we know about the plot so far is that Damon plays a U.S. agent sifting though lies and deception in search of weapons of mass destruction. »
