According to the book Chips was born in 1848, and started at Brookfield in 1870. He was married from 1896-98. Retired in 1913. Came back as head in 1917. Died in 1933, 63 years after starting.

It was mentioned in the film that Chips had a 58 years teaching career starting from 1870, but there was a period during World War I when he was retired for an approximate five year period.

The text is from Virgil. It runs, "[Forsan et] haec olim meminisse juvabit." That translates as "[Perhaps] some day it will be a pleasure to remember these things".
