No 76: Errol Flynn 1909-1959
Flynn was born in Tasmania, the son of an eminent marine biologist, and early on developed a passion for the sea and a reputation as a rebel. Spotted by a Warner Brothers talent scout while a young, very minor actor in England, he became an overnight Hollywood star in 1935 as a last-minute replacement for Robert Donat as the swashbuckling hero of Captain Blood. By 1936 he was the leading contender to play Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind.
Flynn was tall, slim, graceful, debonair with a neatly trimmed moustache, a winning smile, a hearty, self-mocking laugh. Everything he did, both on screen and off, contributed to his legendary status: the colonial background (he claimed to be a descendant of Fletcher Christian); the celebrated characters he played (General Custer, Robin Hood); his sexual conquests; his prodigious phallic dimensions (according to Truman Capote in Music for Chameleons,

New Daybreakers PSA Reminds You to Turn in Humans

Earlier this summer, we posted a great trailer for the upcoming modern vampire tale Daybreakers. The first time I watched the trailer was in the theater before watching The Final Destination and all I could think was “Wow, I wanna watch that instead!” How can a movie go wrong with actors like Ethan Hawke (Gattaca), Sam Neil (Event Horizon) and Willem Dafoe (John Carter of Mars)? The answer – You can’t!
Set in a (obvious) future, fictional world where vampires have just about converted every human to be a stalker of the night, Daybreakers takes the unique approach of applying modern day situations and geopolitical statements to the vampires – they are slowly running out of food (read: blood) and have begun farming humans for just their blood, think The Matrix but with plasma.
A group of humans, lead by the crossbow wielding Elvis (Dafoe), survive outside of the blood farms and while Edward (seriously?

The 1600's don't get nearly enough love in cinema, and it's a real shame. The era of witch hunts, musketeers, and flintlock pistols is a ripe one, and has been the setting for such gems as "Captain Blood", "The Three Musketeers" (partial to the Oliver Reed one, of course; totally badass), and "The Conqueror Worm" (aka "Witchfinder General"). And as much money as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films have made, their success has led more to the greenlighting of franchises based on rides and brands than any real cinematic rediscovery of the 17th century. Anyway, there's something genuinely irresistible about this time frame, at least for me.
I don't know if it's the constant specter of religious strife in the pre- and post-Cromwell era, the fact that this part of

"Aargh!" "Ahoy, matey!" "Shiver me timbers!" Ok, that's it, I'm out of buccaneer bon mots, which are pretty much essential in order to honor Talk Like a Pirate Day, celebrated annually on September 19. And even those pirate sayings are ones I took from an article on the event in Los Angeles Times, which credits John "Oi' Chumbucket" Bauer and Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers for igniting the tradition years ago.
When it comes to movies, the Pirates of the Caribbean series comes trippingly to mind, especially since Disney just announced that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be coming ashore in Summer 2011, with Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow. But it's pretty tough to talk like Johnny Depp -- believe me, I've tried, and gotten my face slapped as a result -- so what other movie pirates can we safely imitate? Here's a quick list:
Errol Flynn. I'm working on my Australian accent,

Warner Bros. Remaking ‘Captain Blood’…In Space

I’m going to throw out the name of a movie that most of our readers have never heard of, much less seen - Captain Blood. It isn’t some indie flick or a PETA documentary on the killing of whales. No, the reason you probably haven’t heard of it is because unless you were a teenager in the 1930’s (which would put you in the late 80’s or early 90’s age range), went to film school or just really love old black and white movies, in all likelihood you’ve never come across the Warner Bros. classic film.
It looks like all that might change soon though as Warner Bros. studios have chosen brothers Michael and Peter Spierig to direct a remake of Captain Blood based on a John Brownlow script. After producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino) and Warner Bros hired Brownlow to do a first draft of Captain Blood,

If you know your pirates and are a fan of classic cinema, then I'm sure I don't need to tell you about Captain Blood. The 1935 swashbuckling classic starred Errol Flynn as a doctor convicted of treason who escapes to the Caribbean to join forces with a French pirate, and was the role that made Flynn a star. But here we are 74 years later and suddenly the word 'remake' started to come up in conversation over at Warner Bros. That was almost a year ago, but not only is the film still in the works, the story is about to get one hell of a venue change. Variety now reports that Daybreakers duo Michael and Peter Spierig have been hired to direct an update that would transplant the action to outer space.
Back in December, Monika brought us the news that John Brownlow had been hired to pen a faithful remake,

A New version of Errol Flynn's 1935 swashbuckling pirate classic Captain Blood - but this time set in space - is to be made for Warner Bros.
Michael and Peter Spierig will direct the feature, from a script by John Brownlow. In the original, Flynn played wrongfully-imprisoned British doctor Peter Blood who escapes to become a pirate in the Caribbean.
It was the Spierig brothers who came up with the new twist of setting it in space.
Robert Schwentke, director of The Time Traveller's Wife, is in negotiations to take the reins of Summit Entertainment's spy thriller Red, based on the Wildstorm/DC comic book and starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has snapped up the film rights to Ashley Wood's graphic novel World War Robot from Idw Publishing. It centres on a small band of humans and robots facing off in a battle on Earth,

Australian film-makers Michael and Peter "Daybreakers" Spierig, have been hired by Warners to script a 'space opera' version of the 1935 high-seas pirate swashbuckler Captain Blood, updating author Rafael Sabatini's story about Dr. 'Peter Blood', who leaves his practice to becomes a pirate.
Sabatini also wrote two additional novels featuring the Peter Blood character, including "Captain Blood Returns" in 1930 and "The Fortunes of Captain Blood" in 1936...

As of last December Catch a Fire director Philip Noyce was on board to remake Captain Blood, the 1935 Errol Flynn swashbuckling epic. But six months later, it seems a lot of things have changed. Michael and Peter Spierig will be directing, according to Variety, and as a result, the whole thing will be set in space.
Yes, space. And even producer Bill Gerber admits that the idea is kind of insane. "At first, I felt like I was in that scene in 'The Player,' where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to 'The Graduate,'" he said in Variety. "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it.'"
Apparently the story will stay relatively similar, regardless of the location shift-- a doctor escapes prison

Warner Bros. Pictures has plucked the 1935 classic Captain Blood starring Errol Flynn from their vault to prime a remake with an unexpected twist.
Per Variety, Rather than Captain Blood pirating and rescuing his love in the Caribbean Sea, he'll be cruising the deep dark reaches of outer space. Sort of like Ice Pirates, only without the ice, sped up time, and nasty Space Herpes.
Michael and Peter Spierig, fresh off writing and directing the upcoming vampire flick Daybreakers, are set to direct based on a script by relative writing newcomer John Brownlow. It was Brownlow's first draft set in space combined with the Spierig's visually unique animatics that sealed the deal with Warner.
"At first, I felt like I was in that scene in The Player, where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to The Graduate," noted Warner producer Bill Gerber. "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction

Avast there, me hearties! Buckle that swash, set phasers on stun and set sail for Alpha Centauri, as classic pirate story Captain Blood prepares for a space-set remake. Yes, the Errol Flynn hit of 1935 is being remade as a sci-fi pirate movie, an idea so batshit-crazy that it might just work. The story of the original saw British Dr Blood (Errol Flynn) convicted of treason and shipped out to the Caribbean as a slave. There, he fell in love with the plantation owner's daughter (Olivia de Havilland) before escaping to a life of piracy. But when the object of his affections is kidnapped by a rival captain (Basil Rathbone) Blood must find a way to win her back. Cue the grappling hooks and rapiers! The new film will stay faithful to the story, except for the small detail of moving all the action into space (and perhaps replacing the rapiers

In 1935 Errol Flynn was about to become the man. With chiseled good looks and an athletic build he charmed ladies and men at the theaters in the role of Captain Blood, a pirate on the high seas in the Caribbean. Flynn went on to become the king of swashbucklers in a string of adventure films (including 1938's classic The Adventures of Robin Hood) and also a legend in the growing gossip-mongering industry for his lothario ways. In any case, Flynn's role as the swarthy pirate captain still remains fondly remembered by film buffs today.
With the stunning success of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy of films Warner Bros. has toyed around with the idea of remaking Captain Blood and cashing in on the yo-ho-ho and a bottle of grog craze. Up 'til now the idea was doing a new Captain Blood film on wet terra firma but now the

Michael and Peter Spierig, the Australian filmmakers behind the low-budget zombie flick Undead and the upcoming sci-fi vampire movie Daybreakers, have been hired by Warner Bros. to write a new version of the 1935 pirate swashbuckler Captain Blood.
The project will update the Errol Flynn classic concerning Peter Blood, a wrongly imprisoned British doctor who escapes to become a pirate in the Caribbean.
The brothers were victorious in a competition against other filmmakers after pitching their own take on the movie to Warner Bros. and producer Bill Gerber, which will take the story into outer space. The Spierig siblings won the gig with a bold animatic presentation, Gerber said.
"...when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it.'," Gerber told the trade.
However, Gerber has gone on record

It sounds like the punchline to a joke, but it’s not: According to Variety, Warner Bros. has attached Australian siblings Michael and Peter Spierig to direct a space version of the classic 1935 swashbuckling pirate movie “Captain Blood”. They’ve also hired John Brownlow to pen the script, which will follow the plot of the original closely, except, er, you know, that whole space thing.
The 1935 original starred Errol Flynn as Peter Blood, a wrongly imprisoned British doctor who escapes to become a pirate in the Caribbean. He teams up with a French pirate name Levasseur (played by Basil Rathbone), but as is always the case, a woman from his past (played by Olivia De Havilland) eventually comes between them.
According to the trade, the space remake will be very faithful to the original plot, except the Caribbean will now become space, and instead of ships, they’ll have, well,

We've known for a while that Warners has been working on a new version of 1935 pirate tale Captain Blood.
But now the studio, working from an intriguing new idea from directing brothers Peter and Michael Spierig (both below), who made Undead and the upcoming Daybreakers, have decided to greenlight a reboot set... in space.
The original, which starred Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in the tale of a doctor who signs on with a pirate crew, only to clash with his skipper over the love of a woman - is very firmly set on Earth.

Last December it was announced that Phillip Noyce would be directing a remake of the 1935 swashbuckler pirate classic Captain Blood. Variety announces that Noyce is off the project and has been replaced by Michael and Peter Spierig, the two Australian brothers behind the upcoming Daybreakers movie. But there's a twist - the Spierig's Captain Blood will be set in space. Warner Brothers heard numerous tired pitches off and on, but "when I took a look at [the Spierig's] animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it'," producer Bill Gerber explained. Read on!
Gerber says that despite the radical period and venue switch, the film will be fairly faithful to a plot in which the doctor, Peter Blood, joins up with a French pirate (played in the original by Basil Rathbone), only to clash with

If you know me personally, follow me on twitter (please don't), or if you're outside my window every day stalking me (Hi, Maureen!) then you'll know that while Neil delights in having excuses to search for scandalous pictures of Megan Fox, I find a certain thrill in finding images of Golden Era Hollywood actresses. All you really have to do is scope my list of the Sexiest Gangster Girlfriends to realize that I have a slight preoccupation with the likes of Mae Clark and Virginia Mayo, and of course I have to constantly avoid choosing Jean Arthur films for Old Ass Movies so I don't get accused of favoritism.
As you might guess, I have to do the same for Olivia de Havilland - even if I did end up writing about her when I wrote up Captain Blood.
The woman was gorgeous and talented in her prime, stealing scenes left and right with her trademark smile
