A Dud But Maybe The Ladies And The Gay Guys Liked The Beefcake, 3 August 2004
2/10
Author: David (Handlinghandel) from NY, NY

The unspeakably vulgar Jimmy Durante at this point had taken over as MGM's prime comic -- taken over from the great Buster Keaton.

Thankfully Durante has a small role here. But the whole thing is a mess that really doesn't hold together.

I have never attended, taught at, or known of a college where the girls swoon as they do here over the crew! But it's a chance to show boys in bathing suits; so that must have been a selling point.

Otherwise, it is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sort of affair that needs a plumber badly. Eddie Canor movies of this period were similarly all over the map. There was a differrence, though: They were funny, well cast, and well written.

I miss seeing them on cable TV, in fact.
