Review
The DVD debuts of four mystery features starring Swedish-born actor Warner Oland as Charlie Chan -- all exclusive to this box set. Created by Earl Derr Biggers, the Honolulu detective solved mysteries in a series of six novels which were quickly adapted to the screen. Charlie Chan in London (1934), the first original script not based on one of the novels, sends Chan to England where he solves a murder during a weekend at an English country manor. Drue Leyton and Ray Milland co-star. Number one son Lee (Keye Luke) makes his first screen appearance in Charlie Chan in Paris (1935) and Rita Hayworth (as Rita Cansino) and Stepin Fetchit co-star in Charlie Chan in Egypt (1935). A banquet in his honor brings the Honolulu detective and his eldest son Lee to China in Charlie Chan in Shanghai (1935), where murder and kidnapping are on the menu. Also features Eran Trece (1931), the Spanish language version of the otherwise "lost" first talkie of the series Charlie Chan Carries On (1931), shot on the same sets with a completely different cast and crew and featuring Manuel Arbó as Charlie Chan.
