Pre-Paths of Glory trenches tracking shots., 25 January 2005

This film, which is very much a Raoul Walsh film, has a bit of the same structure that, his later war film, "battle cry" . Most of the film is constituted of romance and comedy inter-cut by brutal war scenes. These romantic scenes are extremely saucy in these pre hays code days, Lowe and Mclaglen touch and look at every parcel of Del Rio's body . These war sequences are priceless , beautifully shot and capturing a roughness that most war films don't even come near to . It is unfortunate that this film is not available, I saw an Italian video with Italian titles which was a little hard to get into. plus the music that they threw onto it was pretty awful. Walsh made two similar films with Mclaglen and Lowe "the cock-eyed world" and "women of all nations" which are both very hard to find.

Kubrick probably remembered those tracking shots of Victor MacLaglen in the trenches when he made Paths of Glory 30 years later.
