For fans of the WWI film only - odd jumble of comedy and drama, 10 September 2001
5/10

With a title like that you'd think this would be a serious war film but it's primarily a comedy with some pieces of drama thrown in for good measure. Flagg (McLaglen) and Quirt (Lowe) get on each others' nerves and manage to play pranks on and outsmart each other while overseas in WWI France, especially when after the same peasant girl,Charmain, (Dolores Del Rio). This comedy sparring is interrupted by a battle sequence where lives are lost and then the comedy ensues once more. It's an odd jumble, never quite figuring out what it is or wants to be. Barry Norton is effective as the young "mother's boy" Lewisohn with a handsome matinee idol face. Ted McNamara manages to blatantly overact his big scene as Kiper, delivering the anti-war speech from which the title is derived. Phyllis Haver has a delightful small bit as Shanghai Mabel, the boys' first romantic object. The film is flatly shot and directed, except for two excellent battle montages. The musical score is made up primarily of lively renditions of MY MAN and THE OLD GREY MARE with a bit of Tchaikovsky's PATHETIQUE symphony thrown in. This is a film that strictly appeals to the fans of war films and hetero male camaraderie. For the general audience, it's pretty much a wash out.
