I first heard about this film while I was watching the excellent documentary "Mummy Dearest: A Horror Tradition Unearthed" about the making of and the legacy of the 1932 classic Universal movie "The Mummy'. According to the documentary "Eyes of the Mummy" was the first film about Egyptian embalming practices causing a corpse to come back to life. Because of this "Eyes of the Mummy" is an interesting historical documentary, but unfortunately it's not a good film. This film has several major problems with perhaps the biggest being how clanky the whole thing is. Director Ernest Lubitsch is never able to establish a constant pace. At times the movie moves along just finely while at other times it seems to barely be moving along at all. Furthermore, a good mood is never established and the music seems misplaced. All and all this is a forgettable experience other than its historical importance.
