Now that Chaplin knew which roles he wanted to play, he was given the enviable opportunity to direct his own scripts, and to make a mark in Hollywood as the king of silent comedy. Had he not been given the opportunity to direct (as quite a lot of aspiring directors are experiencing), Hollywood would probably have lost a dimension to its appeal that it didn't have before Chaplin was on the scene.
