based on the sophisticated, quirky british secret-agent television series of the 1960s. a scientist who develops the means to control large-scale weather changes uses his discovery to wreak evil. emma peele and john steed must stop the villian for person

Review
Universally hated upon its release, The Avengers, Jeremiah Chechick's big-screen adaptation of the cult-classic British television series, is not as much of a disaster as audiences have been led to believe. Many of the points for which the very expensive and very low-grossing film was originally criticized are true. The film's plot, which finds our spy heroes trying to stop evildoers who wish to control the world's weather, is too downright silly to be as complicated and be taken as seriously as the film treats it. Uma Thurman, while having the perfect lean, mean body to fill Emma Peel's famous cat suit, has a shaky British accent that tends to come and go from scene to scene. Sean Connery, as the brilliantly named villain Sir August de Wynter, seems to be having the time of his life running around wearing a kilt and shouting out every line of dialogue he has. The film, however, moves along during its brisk 89 minutes at such a haywire, roller-coaster pace that it often fails to give the viewer time to register the madness that is happening onscreen. Beautifully shot by acclaimed cinematographer Roger Pratt and featuring gorgeous mod Swinging-'60s-style costumes by Anthony Powell, The Avengers is a film that is wonderful to simply sit back with, letting yourself be sucked into its ludicrous world. Besides, where else will you see an action-packed chase scene featuring a group of guys dressed in Technicolor teddy bear suits? ~ Jason Gibner, All Movie Guide

So bad. Watch the 60's TV episodes as they have come out on VHS and DVD but don't touch this with a 10ft pole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steed & Mrs.Peel, Good to Have you Back !, Jul 2 2004
This review is from: Avengers, the (VHS Tape)
Totally misunderstood movie. A unique and visually stunning film with fantastic costume and set design. Ralph Fiennes was superb as British secret John Steed and gave the character some much needed sex appeal which in my opinion was sadly lacking in the original series. Eileen Atkins produced a classic 60s Avengers style character with her portrayal of 'Alice'. Sadly the Avengers does appear to have been very badly hacked in the editing room at the 11th hour and would certainly benifit from a release of the full length version. 'The Avengers' stayed true to the spirit of the original TV series and visually even improved upon it - Uma Thurman looked almost edible as Mrs. Peel. A fun and highly entertaining movie if you don't take it too seriously. I for one don't know what all the critical fuss is about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Kill Bill Uma, May 22 2004
By Richard Young "CINE 2" (California, USA) - See all my reviews

WARNING: Even though the packaging says it includes 6 trailers, There is only one. Appearantly the other five trailers are included on a CD which is no longer part of the latest DVD release.

I loved this movie. The photography is crisp and beautiful. And there are some Uma Kill Bill action. If you are an Uma Kill Bill fan, you'll enjoy this movie much more than what the critics are saying.

This has to be one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. The opening scenes are pretty ridiculous and it just goes downhill from here. The plot is barely discernable. Read more
