On The Side Order, Jul 16 2003
In 1995, there was a whole success of movie soundtracks that actually made it in the platinum and gold status in the music industry. Largely with collections like Batman Forever and Apollo 13 making it through the stores, it just came as a big reminder of how important music is to movies, and the other way around. Still, there were only two movie soundtrack collections that only featured women in the story. One of them was Waiting To Exhale, and the other was Boys On The Side. The music brought both the old and the new into the storyline. With Boys On The Side, there were thirteen, well actually 12 songs released in this collection that reflect both the old and the new in the music industry with female singer/songwriters. The main standout belongs to Bonnie Raitt with her cover of the Roy Orbison hit, You Got It. Actually, that is on the collection three times, twice with Bonnie Raitt, the other with Whoopi Goldberg. Still, there are also other great songs that seem to fit the bill perfectly including Annie Lennox with Why, and The Cranberries with their strong song, Dreams. The collection also includes new music from Sheryl Crow, The Pretenders, and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame. Still, it is just a shame that they don't make movie sountracks like they used to. The music back then really spoke out to both sides of the story. Still, if you loved the Whoopi Goldberg film, you might enjoy the soundtrack. Otherwise, I suggest you give the soundtrack a whirl, for something new to the mind, and let the women do the talking.
