THE BUZZ: Seeming to crib from The Fast and the Furious, The Skulls and any number of other popular films, Cannon, who came up with the story idea, is obviously trying to find a formula akin to Drumline, his breakout success. And while the cast sure is pretty, and the cars will certainly run hot, The Underclassmen might just get lost amongst the fall release blahs.

THE BUZZ: Wood, in this adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's acclaimed novel, returns to the type of role in which he captured our curiosity. Liev Schreiber makes his directorial debut from his script; five bucks says he gets Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. The hip press is buzzing about Hutz's performance, saying the mustachioed ringleader of punk cabaret Gogol Bordello nails the nuanced character of Alex. Venom (2005) -- A pack of teenagers run for their lives through the swamps of Louisiana, as they are chased by Mr. Jangles, a man possessed by 13 evil souls who is relentless in his pursuit of new victims.

THE BUZZ: While at first glance it seems indistinguishable from any number of other horror flicks this year, we're be first in line for The Reaper provided it's rated R, like Kevin Williamson (who's just producing here) and director Gillespie's last outing together, I Know What You Did Last Summer. You'd think the world would have no use for a retro-70s roller skating comedy, but Roll Bounce is a surprisingly enjoyable and lighthearted comedy that might make you yearn to strap on eight wheels and skate around to "Boogie Oogie Oogie." Boasting an extensive cast of both appealing youngsters and savvy adults, you could pitch this movie as an African-American version of The Wonder Years updated to the 70s...more

Daltry Calhoun (2005) -- In small town Tennessee, a ne'er-do-well man (Knoxville) wrestling for control over his fading golf club is reunited with his estranged daughter, a 14-year-old musical prodigy.

THE BUZZ: We bet Knoxville leapt at the chance to return to his home state to work with producer Quentin Tarantino (also a Tennesse native) and writer-director Bronson, who here makes her debut. Daltry was one of the post-Jackass roles (along with Grand Theft Parsons) that convinced us of Knoxville's savvy transition from TV to film. With The Dukes now behind him (unless Bo and Luke head to Europe?), we're glad Knoxville's back on track.

THE BUZZ: Ah, the arrival of fall and with it, movies that are meant to be discussed as, and after, the credits roll. Director Vinterberg (The Celebration) works off a Lars Von Trier screenplay - one that explores gun culture in America; Bell, meanwhile, continues to be the most interesting non-American playing Americans around.

THE BUZZ: Disney bucks conventional wisdom by hitting the links and going wide with director Paxton's second film. Feels more like a limited release to us, though the studio's putting most of their third quarter marketing dollars behind the picture. Reviews have been generally favorable, saying Paxton has structured a good story around both Ouimet and Vardon; Stephen Dillane reportedly steals the film, of course.

THE BUZZ: Nice to see Hoffman back in action ... Bennett Miller (The Cruise) makes his feature debut in this awards-ready drama, which got a leg up on Douglas McGrath's sound-alike project starring Toby Jones and Daniel Craig (and Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee, which we would laugh at if she wasn't so good in Crash). This makes us want to curl up and re-read In Cold Blood.

Review: 8 out of 10 stars: Watching Serenity is a bit like being an outsider at a party of old college friends.

Part of the fun there, if you're comfortable with the setting, and the people are sociable, is picking up on the vibes amongst the attendees and guessing about the past associations and current dramas. Who slept with whom? Who resents whom?

The Plot: Young Xan (Michaeletos), living a non-traditional life on his parents' ranch in Kenya, takes in an orphaned cheetah cub as a pet. Quickly, Xan and Dooms, as the cub comes to be known, become inseparable friends. Based on Cawthra Hopcraft's picture-book.

THE BUZZ: Campbell Scott and Hope Davis reunite for their second project in as many years, this time for sensitive director Ballard (Fly Away Home, The Black Stallion). In spite of discouraging test screenings, Warner Bros. is giving the film a chance, as critics have backed the family picture, a live action update of the touching book How It Was with Dooms. Ballard has been in this position before, as some 25 years ago, his Stallion was shelved by United Artists (who were mired in Heaven's Gate at the time). When producer Francis Ford Coppola took up the cause, the Stallion rode on to massive success.
