Director: Andy Wachowski Larry Wachowski Stars: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: The final chapter in the Matrix trilogy follows Neo, Trinity and Morpheus as they and their followers fight the machines in one last battle. Set mainly in the ruins of the real world outside of the matrix, it is an end-all war as the fate of humanity is placed in the hands of the chosen one, Neo.

Director: Jon Favreau Stars: Will Ferrell, Edward Asner, Bob Newhart (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, Buddy (Ferrell), a man raised as an elf at the North Pole, is sent to New York to reunite with his biological father (Caan).
THE BUZZ: With its heart in the right place and a memory steeped in the aforementioned Rankin-Bass holiday cartoons, Elf is a routinely passable exercise in family moviemaking. It ladles on the schmaltz ever so gently, goes down easy and smooth, with just a trace of nourishment, but the overall taste is bland and beige, and never truly inspired. It's just kind of... there. ...more Review: 6 out of 10 stars We all have a general idea of what Christmas elves are like. Director: Richard Curtis Stars: Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Ten separate stories of people finding love in London. The spotlight thread focuses on the newly appointed Prime Minister (Grant), who falls in love with the fetching lass (McCutcheon) who brings him his tea.
THE BUZZ: Sometimes, truth in advertising is really refreshing. Writer/director/producer Richard Curtis's latest movie is called Love Actually, and what's it about? Yup, you guessed it, love. Writer/director/producer Richard Curtis's latest movie is called Love Actually, and what's it about? Yup, you guessed it, love. And, as the poster suggests, the film's various stories really do resemble Christmas presents. Director: Gus Van Sant Stars: Elias McConnell, John Robinson, Alex Frost (Full Cast) Studio: HBO Films The Plot: A day in the life of ten different high school students in Portland, Oregon culminates in a violent, shocking incident.
THE BUZZ: Say what you will about Gerry (in which Van Sant turned his back on Hollywood and, well, fame, success, etc.), but no one expected Elephant to best Lars von Trier's Dogville for the Golden Palm award at Cannes (and while you're at it, say what you will about that fest's selection this year). Van Sant earns our respect for trying to frame some of the factors that contribute to high school violence, and for polarizing audiences with his latest project. If you are at all interested in more on his take on this subject (or Gerry or his abandoning Hollywood), a quick google search yields a series of very cool interviews with the director. Keaulana (Full Cast) Studio: Arenaplex Entertainment The Plot: A cross-continental documentary on tow-in surfers, extreme athletes who travel far out into the ocean in search of the elusive 100-foot wave. THE BUZZ: For those of you who thought that the tow-in segments were the best part of Step Into Liquid, here's your chance to see more of that scene. Their main goal is to catch up to the Acheron, a French ship that carried out a sneak attack on the surprise. Aubrey and crew chase their enemies through Cape Horn, and the South American coast to the Galapagos Islands.

Director: Steve Anderson Stars: Jon Favreau, Joey Lauren Adams, Kelsey Grammer (Full Cast) Studio: Artisan Entertainment The Plot: A struggling actor accepts a strange mission that promises to settle all his financial debts. THE BUZZ: Director Anderson has spent years behind the camera on documentaries and the like (trivia item: he won a Cable Ace Award for his coverage of the '94 L.A. earthquake). He's assembled a noteworthy cast for his debut, and a vague-enough premise (Vegas, aliens, Bud Cort and a mysterious suitcase) that has our interest piqued. Director: Robert Cary Stars: Isabel Rose, Andrew McCarthy, Cameron Bancroft (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films The Plot: A cabaret singer is caught in a love triangle with her high school sweetheart and a fellow struggling musician. THE BUZZ: Being released as Anything but Love, director Cary's debut spent the better part of last year on the festival circuit before Samuel Goldwyn picked it up. As a tribute to 1950s Tehnicolor musicals, with 80s actor McCarthy in a lead role (not to mention performances by Eartha Kitt), our interest is piqued. To complicate her situation, a vengeance spirit toys with her as she tries to piece together her recent past.
THE BUZZ: Gothika isn't really the right name for this wan Halle Berry thriller that imagines the horrifying repercussions of becoming a patient in your own asylum. Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu Stars: Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Naomi Watts (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A freak accident brings together a critically ill mathematician (Penn), a grieving mother (Watts) and a born-again ex-con (Del Toro).
THE BUZZ: Okay, so the trailer was rather annoying and heavy-handed, but it's been an agonizing wait for Iñárritu's English-language debut and follow-up to Amores perros, which is a perfect film. Both films have structural/thematic similarities and can boast award-winning cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto behind the lens. Expect a par-for-the-course fine performance from Sean ("How much does Oscar weigh?") Penn, a return to form for del Toro, and more electricity from Watts, Hollywood's premiere It Girl. THE BUZZ: Marie-Josee Croze made little baby waves after winning the Best Actress award at Cannes this year (besting hands-on favorite Nicole Kidman in Dogville) for her role as a smacked-out, estranged daughter. Writer/director Arcand was awarded Best Screenplay honors for this, his most widely acclaimed film since Jésus de Montréal. THE BUZZ: Quietly revered by critics and film festival audiences alike, Triplettes has some of the best-looking animation I've seen in a while. It also, in my opinion, sports the year's most dazzling trailer. Though Maggie is quite hostile towards her father, she struggles to work with him after her daughter (Wood) is kidnapped by a band of murderers who follow a mystical Brujo, or witch.
THE BUZZ: Ron Howard's The Missing is often not a pretty portrait. In fact, so unrelentingly bleak, unpleasant, and brutal is his depiction of the Old West that it becomes a victim of its own effectiveness. more Review: In John Ford's 1956 classic The Searchers Ethan Edwards, played by John Wayne, is doggedly on the trail of the renegade party that wiped out his brother, his brother's family, and kidnapped his two nieces, Lucy and Debbie.
