THE BUZZ: Who would have thought that a movie with so much heavy metal would defy gravity? Review: Who would have thought that a movie with so much heavy metal would defy gravity? That's not to say that Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines doesn't succeed as an action movie, or as a sequel. It has enough wanton destruction to satiate any person's desire for damage. It moves along briskly (perhaps too briskly), has a sense of humor, and even a more somber side that surprises near the end. But what it does lack is gravity; some sense of realistic consequence...more Message Boards: Better than Terminator Salvation. | 6 years since official release... THE BUZZ: Focus Features, who brought Ozon's wonderful 8 Women to the States last year, reteams with the director for his latest project. Pool is a return to dramatic form for Ozon, and he's cast Ludivine Sagnier, who was magnificent in Women, in another mysterious daughter role. We can't wait. Satã was a transvestite cabaret star, street brawler, cook, outlaw, and adoptive father who spent as much of his life in prison as he did on the streets. THE BUZZ: The verdict is still out as to whether or not director Ainouz's debut is a technically proficient, faithful depiction of Satã's beyond-colorful life, but one thing is for sure: Lázaro Ramos' performance has the critics gushing. Director: Michael Polish Stars: Duel Farnes, Nick Nolte, Anthony Edwards (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Classics The Plot: Set in 1955, the residents of Northfork, Montana are faced with evacuation as a new dam is set to flood their town. Meanwhile, a group of nomadic eccentrics seek to adopt a dying 9-year-old orphan (Farnes), who is cared for by the town's priest (Nolte).
THE BUZZ: The third film from the surrealist Polish Brothers boasts an impressive ensemble cast (who worked for peanuts), and heart-tug of a story, and Anthony Edwards' impressive mustache. When the American landlords come calling, romance blooms between Cassandra and Simon (Thomas), the son and heir to the property. Problem is, the Mortmains have already fixed up Rose and Simon, in a move to protect their life in the castle. THE BUZZ: Sony Pictures Classics snapped up Masked a couple days before its premiere at Sundance, which features Dylan in his first screen role in 16 years. THE BUZZ: Scorched has sat on the shelf for well over a year while one of its production companies slowly went out of business, but now Never Land Films has picked up the reins and is self-releasing the film. THE BUZZ: Sun first gained attention when it topped Almodóvar's Talk to Her as Spain's nominee for Best Foreign Language Oscar, then it went on to best all other Spanish films in Goya nominations, where it received 5 awards. And even though the Academy ignored the picture (and Pedro certainly got the last laugh), look for this to be a crossover success, if only because women - and plenty of men - will flock to watch dreamboat Bardem lay around and look all forlorn. THE BUZZ: Camp, which was backed by three savvy production companies, scored big at Sundance, and the mid-summer release date should bode well for director Graff's debut, as audiences may still have a lingering hunger for all things musical. Director: Gregor Jordan Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, Ed Harris (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Films The Plot: A druggy subculture operates among U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall, with the battalion commander, Colonel Berman (Harris) and his clerk, Sgt. Ray Elwood (Phoenix) at its center. Sgt. Lee (Glenn), fresh on the scene, tips the MPs as to the goings-on, without realizing Sgt. Elwood has his eyes set on his daughter (Paquin).
THE BUZZ: It's quite bold of director Jordan to make light of the American military in these go-fight-win times; no wonder Miramax has been toying with Soldiers' release date (it was supposed to come out over a year ago). The studio also endured the same peace-sign-on-the-poster drama as What a Girl Wants. If the liberals need any other reason to seek out the film, there's also the very sexy of Phoenix and Paquin. THE BUZZ: Figgis is up to his Timecode tricks again - "pushing the boundaries of film", as the highfalutin saying goes - in his continuing attempt to prove that the language of film may not be universal. Like any grand experiment, Hotel could teeter towards failure, despite its ace cast and the goofy goings-on.
