David Hemmings: 1941-2003

Actor David Hemmings, who became one of the iconic faces of the swinging London scene in the 60s with his performance in the groundbreaking Blow-Up, died Wednesday of a heart attack on the set of his latest film; he was 62. After finishing the final day's shots for Samantha's Child in Romania, Hemmings collapsed as he was heading back to his dressing room, and paramedics were unable to revive him. Hemmings started his career as a professional singer at the age of nine, and as he grew up made nightclub and stage appearances before moving to film in the late 50s. Early roles saw him as one of the many disaffected young men of post-war England, and he gained his greatest fame as the fashion photographer who may have photographed a murder in Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up (1966), the quintessential "swinging 60s" film and one of the most influential of the decade. He followed up that film with a scene-stealing turn as Mordred in the otherwise moribund film adaptation of the musical Camelot, and a role opposite Jane Fonda in the cult classic Barbarella. Innumerable character roles followed, and Hemmings also turned to directing in 1972, helming both movies and TV series through the following decades as his acting career waned. He returned to film acting in 2000 with Gladiator, and also appeared recently in Last Orders, Spy Game, Gangs of New York and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Hemmings is survived by his third wife Lucy Williams, their two sons, a daughter from his first marriage and a son from his second. --Prepared by IMDb staff

Exhausted Bloom Takes a Timeout
Lord Of The Rings hunk Orlando Bloom is taking some time out from his busy filming schedule to allow himself to reflect on his incredible rise to fame. The hunky British actor has become an international sex symbol and a hot property in Hollywood following his performances in the Peter Jackson- directed trilogy and swashbuckling adventure Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. But Orlando, 26, is finding it hard to cope with the persistent press attention that has accompanied his movie success and wants to escape the media furor in order to keep his feet on the ground. He says, "I've bought a place in London and I'm having my first break in a long time. I'm going to furnish it, get back to watching some movies and get myself sorted out. At one point, I was tempted to squeeze in another film. But it would have been crazy to keep up that pace, so I'm going to try to relax and find the resources to come back. I'm not complaining, but there hasn't been a moment to pause and take stock. I feel as if I've been in a time warp from the age of 22 to 26."

Britney Takes to the Road

Pop princess Britney Spears will embark on a 25-date North American tour next spring, to support her new album In The Zone. The sexy singer will start in San Diego, California in March and end in New York City in the middle of April. After debuting at number one in the US charts after its first week of release, In The Zone has now sold 860,000 copies in two weeks in the States - but sales are still struggling in comparison to singer's last album Britney, which shifted 1.3 copies in its first week alone. Earlier this year, Britney said she expected a different response to her new material, because of her image change from teen pop star to adult artist. She said, "Of course, I'm not doing '. . . Baby One More Time' and those big, massive hits anymore. I think this record is where I'm at right now in my life. It's sensual, it's sexual. I'm probably writing about sex subconsciously because I don't have that right now."
Jackson Sweeps for Bugs

Troubled pop star Michael Jackson has had his Neverland ranch swept for surveillance equipment to ensure police have not placed bugs there. Jackson has reportedly become so paranoid after he was secretly filmed with attorney Mark Geragos while traveling on a private jet to face child molestation allegations last month, he has even had toys in his Californian ranch checked for bugs in case police planted them when they searched his home for evidence. A source says, "He ordered a sweep of the entire place. They're even running the teddy bears through radio-frequency sensors to see if there might be transmitters inside." However, Jackson's representative says he had "not heard" of the sweep, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department says, "Those are absurd allegations."

Kerner reportedly received hospital treatment and "three stitches in his penis and two in his scrotum" after the incident. The case is due for a jury trial on 16 June next year.
