Cinema Guild will bring Agnès Varda’s Les plages d’Agnès / The Beaches of Agnès back to Los Angeles for an open-ended return engagement on Saturday, December 26, and Sunday, December 27, at 11 am at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in West Hollywood and Playhouse 7 in Pasadena.
Named the Best Documentary of 2009 (tied with Louie Psihoyos‘ The Cove) by the Los Angeles Film Critics, The Beaches of Agnès has also been included on the shortlist for Academy Award consideration in the Best Documentary Feature category. Additionally, The Beaches of Agnès was nominated for an European Film Award.

Indiana Film Critics Awards 2009
The Indiana Film Critics — I hadn’t heard of this group before — has announced its list of winners. Will it influence the Oscars? Not really, but it’s interesting to see that Indianans have gone their own way by choosing Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air as the best picture of the year, The Cove as best documentary, George Clooney as best actor, Carey Mulligan as best actress. Most shocking of all was the choice of Mo’Nique as best supporting actress and Christoph Waltz as best supporting actor. No, scratch all that.
All joking aside, the Indiana Film Critics have made one curious choice (and that’s better than nothing): Spike Jonze as best director for Where the Wild Things [...]

Walt Disney’s 2D-animated adventure The Princess and the Frog took the North American box office by storm this weekend with a solid $25 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Disney’s anticipated return to hand-drawn animation expanded to 3,434 locations Friday, earning a weekend average of $7,280 per theater. The film’s total gross currently stands at $27.8 million.
Sandra Bullock’s surprise hit drama The Blind Side slipped to No. 2, taking home another $15.4 million. The story of a conservative family helping out a poor football hopeful reached [...]

Southeastern Film Critics Awards 2009
Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, the tale of a corporate-downsizing expert and frequent flyer who begins to question both his ethics and his existence, was voted best film of 2009 by the Southeastern Film Critics.
Among the other Southeastern Film Critics award winners were George Clooney for Up in the Air, Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia, Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds, and Mo’Nique for Precious. All four performers have won awards elsewhere and all four could be considered the top contenders for the 2010 Academy Awards.
Olivier Assayas‘ family drama Summer Hours, starring Juliette Binoche and Charles Berling, was voted best foreign language film. It’s the fourth win for this family drama that up to now hadn’t been getting [...]

Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia
The Hurt Locker Tops 2009 New York Film Critics Awards
Although there is still quite a bit of room for surprises, the acting categories have four clear favorites following the New York critics‘ announcements: George Clooney for Up in the Air (the NY critics added Fantastic Mr. Fox — but not The Men Who Stare at Goats — to their citation), Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia (but not for It’s Complicated), Mo’Nique for Precious, and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
All four have won awards elsewhere, e.g., National Board of Review (Clooney), the Washington critics (Clooney, Mo’Nique, Waltz), the Boston critics (Streep, Mo’Nique, Waltz), the New York Film Critics Online (Streep, Mo’Nique, Waltz), the Los Angeles [...]

The Hurt Locker Tops 2009 New York Film Critics Awards
5 hours ago
Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce in The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker was the New York Film Critics Circle’s unsurprising choice for best picture of 2009. Yesterday, the Iraq War drama about a Us bomb squad unit won top honors in Boston and Los Angeles as well.
Now, is it a front runner for the Oscars? Not necessarily — unless it wins the Screen Actors Guild’s best ensemble award early next year. For now, both Up in the Air and Precious remain serious contenders. And by February, Avatar may have become a favorite as well.
It’s curious to remember that a year ago The Hurt Locker didn’t even get a Spirit Award nomination for best picture. Back then, long before [...]

Up In The Air, Up, Meryl Streep and Surprises: St. Louis Film Critics 2009 Nominations
7 hours ago
Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson in The Messenger
There were quite a few surprises among the nominees for the St. Louis Film Critics Association 2009 Awards.
I mean, Kim So Yong’s Treeless Mountain for best foreign language film? Jeff Stilson’s Good Hair for best documentary? Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Oren Moverman (The Messenger) for best director? Patton Oswald (Big Fan) and Ben Foster (The Messenger) for best actor? Maya Rudolph (Away We Go) for best actress?
There were several less jarring surprises as well, including Marc Webb’s (500) Days of Summer in the running for best picture; Robert Duvall as best supporting actor for The Road; Jeremy Renner as best actor for The Hurt Locker; Melanie Laurent as best supporting actress for [...]

Two The Weinstein Co. releases are the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s top nominees for the 2009 Critics Choice Awards.
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Rob Marshall’s Nine lead the race with ten nominations each. James Cameron’s soon-to-be blockbuster (how big a blockbuster remains to be seen) Avatar followed closed behind with nine nods. Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air came next with eight nominations apiece. All of them are up for best picture. (The Broadcast critics have expanded their number of categories from 17 to 25, with six nominations per category except [...]

Up In The Air, Sugar Among AFI’s Top Ten Films of 2009
19 hours ago
Algenis Perez Soto in Sugar
There were a couple of surprises among the American Film Institute’s feature-film choices for its AFI Awards 2009: Todd Phillips‘ low-brow box-office smash The Hangover and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s little-seen Sugar.
The story of Dominican baseball player (Algenis Perez Soto) who dreams of one day joining the major leagues, Sugar was a particularly interesting pick as thus far it hasn’t been getting all that much attention from Us critics’ groups. The sports drama got a Spirit Award nomination for best screenplay (that was a year ago) and a best ensemble Gotham Award nod a few weeks ago. That’s basically it.
Most of the other films included in the AFI’s top ten [...]

Avatar Tops New York Film Critics Online List
22 hours ago
I found it inevitable that Avatar would land the top spot of some Us-based critic group or other. And it’s already happened: The New York Film Critics Online have picked James Cameron’s 3-D spectacle — which has mostly received quite respectable reviews — as the best picture of 2009.
Set in a future that’s not all that far off, but on a planet that is way, way far off, Avatar pits greedy, ruthless, narrow-minded human beings — not unlike those inhabiting planet Earth right now — against a blue race with big yellowish eyes and long, flat noses. I haven’t watched the movie, yet, but Cameron has already talked about the possibility of a couple of sequels, which means [...]

Los Angeles Film Critics Awards 2009: Jeff Bridges, Yolande Moreau, Mo’Nique, Christoph Waltz
13 December 2009 5:18 PM, PST
Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart (top); Yolande Moreau in Séraphine (bottom)
Jeff Bridges as the Los Angeles Film Critics‘ best actor for his ageing country singer in Crazy Heart wasn’t totally unexpected, despite strong competition from the likes of Colin Firth for A Single Man (the La critics’ runner-up), George Clooney for Up in the Air, and Morgan Freeman for Invictus.
Now, Yolande Moreau’s win for her performance as the emotionally troubled painter and cleaning lady Séraphine de Senlis in Séraphine was a major surprise — a good one. As a result of the Los Angeles critics’ decision to go out on a limb in the best actress category, César winner Moreau now has a better chance of getting an Oscar nomination.
Well, [...]

Los Angeles Film Critics 2009 Winners: The Hurt Locker
13 December 2009 4:33 PM, PST
As I had predicted, Nine, The Lovely Bones, Avatar, and The Blind Side didn’t get much recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which announced their winners earlier today.
Talent from those films was probably mentioned during the voting, but only Avatar got listed in the final results: it was the runner-up (Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg) in the best production design category, after District 9 (Philip Ivey).
Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker was the Los Angeles critics’ big winner — best film, best director (no split, my prediction notwithstanding) — matching results earlier today from the Boston Society of Film Critics. Actually, the Boston critics gave the Iraq War drama about a team of [...]
