'Dexter' Slaughters the Competition
6 November 2009 5:00 PM, PST
Dexter keeps getting better and better, and the audience knows it. The show continues to break ratings records as the season goes on. Last Sunday's episode 6, for example, broke Showtime's record for highest ratings – which was set the week prior by Dexter episode 5. Frankly, I'm not surprised. This season is spectacular. Dexter found a mentor who isn't dead! Deb can't catch a break! Dexter's marriage is on the rocks! John Lithgow! I have loved Dexter since season 1, but this season has turned me into a fan girl. Oh right, the nitty-gritty. Episode 6 had nearly 2 million viewers – and that was just for the premiere 9... »
Review: 'The Fourth Kind'
6 November 2009 2:41 PM, PST
The new sci-fi abduction thriller The Fourth Kind should really be called 'The Fourth Wall', because right from the start the film consciously makes the choice to break that wall and have the actors talk directly to the audience as themselves. As the camera annoyingly spins around her, star Milla Jovovich walks right up to the lens and tells us that she will be playing a real life person, psychiatrist Abbey Tyler, who you'll sometimes see on screen in purportedly "real video footage" of the incidents portrayed. Jovovich then warns us that what we'll see is deeply disturbing, but the ultimate effect of all this explanation isn't disturbance, it's just distraction. Writer/director... »

Elena's first meeting with her is at the Salvatore house, Lexi wearing nothing but a towel. This does not sit well with either girl. Elena because she is jealous; Lexi because Elena is the spitting image of Catherine. Later on, at a party at The Grill, Lexi feels Elena's jealousy from across the room and goes to her, reassuring her that she and Stefan have never been romantic and telling her that she can see the true love... »
Review: 'The Box'
6 November 2009 7:40 AM, PST
Wikipedia tells me that the great Richard Matheson was none too pleased with the 1986 Twilight Zone episode that was based on his 1970 short story Button, Button. And having just witnessed the certifiably bizarre Richard Kelly adaptation, I think it's safe to say that Mr. Matheson would have absolutely loathed this version. Let's just say the TV version was a truncated version of the original story, whereas this brand-new two-hour cinematic version is the exact opposite: It wanders off in a variety of directions that pretty much boggle the mind. Which is probably why I liked The Box as much as I did. With a few reservations, sure, but call it fascinating or call it absurd ... it's still pretty damn... »
Exclusive: Tobin Bell Talks 'Saw VII'
5 November 2009 6:45 PM, PST
One of the secrets to the Saw franchise's success has been its ability to plan ahead. And so before Saw VI's release, well before, plans were already underway to shoot Saw VII. But next year's sequel already promises something to distinguish it from the prior installments in the Saw series – 3-D. At the recent La red carpet for Saw VI, we asked star Tobin Bell what he thinks about the decision to continue Jigsaw's story in a different medium. Find out what he told us after the jump. "It will be an interesting experience," said Bell. "I'll be doing the same thing. Possibly doing it differently, like saying, 'Reach out this way!' But I am... »
Exclusive: Bai Ling on 'Gauntlet' and 'Confidant'
5 November 2009 6:00 PM, PST
A movie premiere just isn't a movie premiere without Bai Ling... At this week's red carpet for The Black Waters of Echo's Pond I chatted with the ubiquitous actress about her two upcoming thrillers, The Gauntlet and The Confidant. Read what she had to say after the jump. "Gauntlet was shot in China," she told me, "It's about six people who are lost, trapped underground, but they have to survive. There's danger and they have lost their memory and they have to fight. They become friends, but in the end they find out only one person has survived, so the test was to kill each other. It's about human potential, human danger, what we are... »
Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu?" Hell Yeah!
5 November 2009 4:18 PM, PST
'Hell Yeah!' is an ongoing series in which horror filmmakers, critics and fans share their take on movies they love. This month: vampires! I know I might seem a little off-base harboring deep love for the 1979 remake of Nosferatu, considering F.W. Murnau's silent 1922 original is basically the first feature film about vampires ever committed to celluloid, and unofficially (or illegally, to be fair) the first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's iconic novel Dracula. In the minds of most vamp fans, Murnau's film is a landmark in motion picture history... so why pass it over for a later interpretation by another German auteur, the eccentric Werner Herzog – whose main claim to infamy was hauling a... »
Streets Run Red This Month in NYC
5 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST
The schedule for the New York City Horror Film Fest has been announced. The genre festival, now in its eight year, will run from November 18-22 at the Tribeca Cinemas. Hit the jump to learn what films will be featured. The nine features playing include Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, an '80s slasher throwback starring Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects) and Danielle Harris (the Halloween franchise); the haunted house tale The Shadow Within; Maidenhead about a guy whose mundane life is punctuated by caring for his strapped-to-the-bed father, who happens to also be a monster; The Revenant sees a soldier die in combat, only to be resurrected as a revenant; a rave is interrupted by a beast who... »
Lily Cole on Marilyn Manson's 'Phantasmagoria'
5 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST
Lily Cole isn't a household name in America, but in her native England she's achieved big success as a model (The Sunday Times ranked her the 77th richest young person in Britain). And she's begun turning that success into an acting career. I caught up the redheaded stunner this week in Beverly Hills at the press junket for Terry Gilliam's new The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, in which she plays Valentina, the long-suffering daughter of Christopher Plummer's titular Doctor, opposite Heath Ledger in his final screen performance. She's next set to star in something considerably darker – Marilyn Manson's feature film directorial debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. Read what she told us... »
Exclusive: Director Gabriel Bologna on 'Black Waters of Echo's Pond'
5 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST
At this week's red-carpet premiere of The Black Waters of Echo's Pond, we had the chance to catch up with the film's writer-director Gabriel Bologna and producer Jason Loughridge (pictured above from right to left). Check out what he had to say about the fun indie thriller – co-written by Sean Clark and Michael Berenson, and starring a host of genre vets, from Robert Patrick to Danielle Harris – after the jump. "I've always been fascinated with the duality of mankind," said Bologna, "and I wanted to write a movie where the killer is you. It's a group of friends who vacation to an island off the coast of Maine and stumble across, in this old house, a very elaborate old game and... »
Exclusive: Director Anthony Diblasi on 'Dread'
4 November 2009 7:30 PM, PST
At the recent red carpet premiere of Saw VI we had an opportunity to speak with Anthony Diblasi, the director of the upcoming Clive Barker adaptation Dread. Read what he had to say about the film after the jump. "I think people are going to be surprised by Dread because it's a very accessible story. I think people who have really gotten to know Clive's material will appreciate it for being faithful. It's a story that centers around college students. It's a thriller. There's nothing fantastical about it – it's gruesome and there are some elements that feel very Darko-ish, but it's more accessible for a wider audience. I made it for my inner twenty-year-old, but now me being nine years away... »
Exclusive: Electra Avellan Talks 'Machete'
4 November 2009 6:30 PM, PST
At last night's red carpet premiere of Black Waters of Echo's Pond, we caught up with one of the film's stars, Electra Avellan (a.k.a. one half of Planet Terror's Crazy Babysitter Twins), who told us about her role in Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete. Based on the faux trailer in Grindhouse, Machete will again see Danny Trejo's title character unleashing hell on earth upon corrupt politicians and various other ne'er-do-wells. Find out what Avellan told us about the film after the jump. Regarding the amount of humor that will be present in Machete (as opposed to drama), Avellan remarked, "In my opinion, I'm not speaking for Robert at all, this movie is taken more seriously [than]... »
'The Host 2' Tie-In Video Game
3 November 2009 4:55 PM, PST
In an odd bit of news, it seems that not even Asia is able to resist the urge to create tie-in games to release alongside their films, with the announcement that the mysterious sequel to Bong Joon-Ho's monster movie The Host (titled The Host 2, natch) will have a video game released alongside the film. News from TwitchFilm.net tells us that much like the movie whose title and themes it shares, very little is known about the game, except that it is being developed by Queens Soft to be released on multiple platforms, including PC, mobile, and 'consoles.' Exactly what consoles remain to be seen, although the usual Xbox 360/PS3 combo seems the most likely. The Host 2 has a tentative release of 2011. »
'Paranormal Activities?'
3 November 2009 1:03 PM, PST
We knew it was only a matter of time before the sequel bug hit Paramount. News was made official this morning that Paramount is looking into a Paramount Activity follow-up. I can already hear the horror world screaming in panic. According to THR, In Viacom's earnings call Tuesday morning, CEO Philippe Dauman said the movie has been one of those surprise hits that comes along only rarely. Given that a follow-up release wouldn't have the same element of surprise as "Paranormal," it will be key to craft a smart approach to a sequel, he said. "Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach." But what do you guys think? Have you seen Paranormal Activity and... »
'YellowBrickRoad' Trailer Creeps us Out
3 November 2009 12:32 PM, PST
Leave it to Twitter to bring a new horror flick to my attention, and one that looks pretty creepy at that. Thanks to The Signal star Anessa Ramsey's Twitter feed, we have the brand new trailer for YellowBrickRoad. Yes, that's the way it's written, no spaces. See below for the new trailer and full description for the film about 'The first official expedition into a dark and twisted wilderness in an attempt to solve the mystery of the lost citizens of Friar New Hampshire.' YellowBrickRoad stars Anessa Ramsey (The Signal), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) and her older brother Clark Freeman and was written/directed by Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton. One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar... »
'Planet of the Vampires?' Hell Yeah!
3 November 2009 12:08 PM, PST
'Hell Yeah!' is an ongoing series in which horror filmmakers, critics and fans share their take on movies they love. This month: vampires! I'm a huge horror film fan, but I'm not especially drawn to vampire films for some reason. That's not to say I dislike vampires... it's just that I'm a bit more selective when it comes to that particular slice of the horror genre. I love Carl Theodor Dreyer's dreamlike Vampyr (1932) and F.W. Murnau's sinister Nosferatu (1922). Larry Fessenden's Habit (1996) is one of the best vampire films in recent memory. But today I'm going to talk about an entirely different flavor of vampire film: Mario Bava's Planet Of The... »

We've also received word from Overture that filming has just begun on writer/director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) Let Me In, his remake of the critically acclaimed vampire import, Let the Right One In. More below. Check out our exclusive interview with the producers of The Fields here.
