Interview: Marrying Irish Humour & Filmmaking Talent, 'Happy Ever Afters' in Cinemas Dec 26

'Happy Ever Afters', the debut feature film from writer and director Stephen Burke (Anner House, No Tears) comes down the aisle on December 26th with the premise that sometimes the happiest day of all can be the most heartbreaking. Iftn chats to Burke and two of the film's stars Tom Riley and Jade Yourell. The film's plot is anything but straightforward: Freddie, played by Tom Riley (Lost in Austen, St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold) and Maura, played by Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, An Education) are getting married, just not to each other. London Film Critic's Circle Laud Irish Acting Talent

The nominees of the 30th annual London Film Critic's Circle Awards have been announced and Irish acting talent features strongly amongst them with Michael Fassbender, Saoirse Ronan and Anne Marie Duff in the running. The category of British Actor in a Supporting Role sees a nomination for Irish actor Michael Fassbender for his role in Andrea Arnold's 'Fish Tank'. The film tells the story of a volatile 15-year-old girl whose world is changed when her mother brings home a mysterious stranger in the shape of Fassbender's character, Connor. Michael will compete with John Hurt for his role in '44 Inch Chest', Jason Isaacs for 'Good', Alfred Molina for 'An Education' and Timothy Spall for 'The Damned United'. »

Tributes Paid to Late Joan Brosnan Walsh

Tributes have been paid to Irish actress Joan Brosnan Walsh passed away on Monday, December 21st. The veteran actress was best known for her role of Mags Kelly in 'Fair City', a character she played for twenty years from September 1989 until January of this year. Joan announced her departure from 'Fair City' in January after announcing that she had contracted motor neurone disease the previous year. She appeared on 'The Late Late Show' on the 23rd January 2009 with her husband, Willie, to discuss her condition with many of her 'Fair City' colleagues also present to pay her warm and heartfelt tributes. »

Eave Selects McCann, Barry and Lyons for Producer's Workshop

The European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (Eave) have announced the participants for the Eave 2010 European Producers Workshop and the list includes Irish producers Connor Barry, Tamsin Lyons and Kevin McCann. in McCann (The Boys of St. Columb's) has been selected to participate without a project whilst Connor Barry will attend bearing his project 'The Ten Steps' and Tamsin Lyons (King of London) will come bearing in mind her project 'Hound'. »

'Adam & Paul' & 'Hunger' are Irish Films of the Decade for Dublin Critics

Lenny Abrahamson's 'Adam & Paul' and Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' have been named as the joint best Irish films of the decade as a result of an annual vote orchestrated by the Dublin Film Critics Circle. The vote also saw Joel Conroy's documentary 'Waveriders' receiving the title of Best Irish Film of the year and Paul Thomas Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood' scooped the prize in the category of Best Film of the Outgoing Decade. The Swedish vampire film, 'Let the Right One In' claimed the title of Best Film of 2009. The 2009 best actor and actress nods went to Sean Penn and Yolande Moreau for their work on 'Milk' and 'Séraphine' respectively. »

Kavaleer Developing Comic Strip 'Hi & Lois'

Yowza Digital & Kavaleer Productions have joined forces to bring Mort Walker's well known and much loved comic strip 'Hi & Lois' to the small screen. The co-development agreement gives Kavaleer the exclusive right to represent the property in Europe, allowing them to seek distribution and broadcaster interest as well as meeting with the funding bodies based in Ireland. Yowza, a Toronto-based animation and visual effects house, and Irish animation house Kavaleer will be working closely together in the coming months. With such a large body of work – spanning fifty years and over 1,100 daily newspapers - there is plenty of inspiration at their disposal. »
