Director Nimrod Antal Talks Casting Adrien Brody and Practical Visual Effects for Preadators

ComingSoon recently spoke with Predators director Nimrod Antal about his upcoming sequel to the classic 1987 action film, and his controversial decision to cast Adrien Brody as the leader of a bunch of bad-asses who fight the Predator aliens.  Antal says that it was too predictable to go with Schwarzenegger-type and how the role demanded someone of Brody’s physique: “He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they’re not ‘yolked-out’ Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They’re all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it’s going to play well.“  Blackwater is the most infamous group of mercenaries fighting the “War on Terror” and here’s a link to a photo with some of them.  Yes, some of them are wiry but that’s an over-generalization and while I appreciate the unconventional casting, the original Predator is set up »

Wes Anderson Interview Fantastic Mr. Fox

27 November 2009 2:41 PM, PST

I absolutely loved director Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.  The film is his first foray into stop-motion animation and it’s like he brought the genre to him rather than attempting to adapt to the genre.  Trust me; if you’re a fan of his previous work like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you’re going to love this movie.

As most of you know, Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach) and it features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wally Wolodarsky, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson.  But unlike some animated movies that cast famous actors to help sell tickets, everyone who provides a voice is perfect in this film.  Again, this is a great movie »

First Images from Smallville’S Two Hour Justice League Episode Penned by Geoff Johns

27 November 2009 2:09 PM, PST

The first images from Smallville’s two hour Justice League movie Absolute Justice have been released and they feature Green Arrow, Hawkman, Doctor Fate and Stargirl.  Originally, Absolute Justice was going to air over two weeks until The CW decided to air them as a two hour movie on Friday, February 5th.

While this season of Smallville has been hit or miss, I’m really looking forward to this Justice League movie because it was written by Geoff Johns.  If you’re not familiar with his name, he’s written comics like Green Lantern, The Flash, Teen Titans, and many others.  Let’s just say he knows the characters and is a talented writer.  Plus he wrote a good episode Smallville last season that featured three members of The Legion of Superheroes.  What I’m trying to say is, this is probably going to be a two hour movie worth watching. »

10-Minutes Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Flying Sequence from Avatar

27 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for James Cameron’s Avatar just went online and it showcases how the film came together on a digital level.  It’s from the short program on the Fox Movie Channel, Making a Scene so while it starts of elementary (explanation of the film’s premise, how motion capture works), about halfway through it starts getting really interesting with how they created the flightplan and control of the winged creatures the Na’vi fly and how they captured the actors’ facial performances in order to bring the Na’vi out of the Uncanny Valley.

At Comic-Con, we (and presumably everyone else on “Avatar Day”) didn’t see as far as Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) flying together on the Banshees (or is it Vaynshees?  Chime in on the comments if you know the correct names and spelling for the winged creatures), but watching Jake »

Ben Kingsley Returns to India to Play Shah Jahan in Taj Mahal

27 November 2009 12:36 PM, PST

The Guardian reports that after 27 years since he won an Oscar for playing Mohandas Ghandi, Ben Kingsley is set to delve into India’s history books once again, this time as Shah Jahan, the Mogul ruler who commissioned the construction of the Taj Mahal.  The Shah reigned over the Mogul Empire between 1628-1658 and built the Taj Mahal after his favored wife Mumtaz Mahal (to be played by Indian superstar and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) died in childbirth.

Kingsley, who is also a producer on the film, had this to say about the project: “With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the seven wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask ‘why’ and ‘how’ this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being. It is an indelible monument to passion and love. How did the building evolve in the first place, »

First Photos from The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader

27 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST

It’s been over ten months since Fox boarded the flagging Chronicles of Narnia franchise and so far news on the fate of the fantasy series has been kind of thin. You may recall that Disney abandoned the Narnia ship after Prince Caspian, the second film in the series, brought in only $400 million worldwide.  That’s what’s called a disappointment in the world of Disney sequels… and a hit in the parlance of Fox. Director Michael Apted is about to wrap production on Narnia 3, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and the studio is marking the occasion by showing off their shiny new acquisition via Facebook. Check out three brand new Dawn Treader photos after the jump.

The photos that Fox posted feature Ben Barnes as King Caspian and two of those precocious Pevensie kids - Skander Keynes as Edmund and Georgie Henley as Lucy. We also get a »

Does Marvel Have Their Sights Set on Jeremy Renner for Hawkeye in The Avengers?

26 November 2009 10:50 AM, PST

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, actor Jeremy Renner hinted that he may be in discussions with Marvel Studios to play Clint Barton, a.k.a. “Hawkeye” in the upcoming mega superhero movie, The Avengers after he has brief cameos in two upcoming Marvel movies including Kenneth Branagh’s Thor (a la Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man).  It’s nice to know that even with all of the Thor casting news, Marvel hasn’t forgotten the plan: Bring Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and other independently successful superheroes together for one of the most audacious feats in blockbuster history.

It’s very cool that Renner is getting serious attention in Hollywood for his fantastic performance in Kathryn Bigelow’s likely Oscar-nominee, The Hurt Locker.  It’s also the smart way to launch Hawkeye into his own franchise.  A Hawkeye movie couldn’t »

Black Friday Shopping Tip: Don’t Buy Hdmi Cables in Store

26 November 2009 10:08 AM, PST

I’m sure an HDTV is on many of our readers’ holiday wish lists (I know it’s on mine), but if you’re planning on buying one for yourself or for someone else, do not buy Hdmi cables in store.  When it comes to their major electronics, stores make most of their money not from the big-ticket item but from the accessories they’ll encourage you to buy along with it.  That’s why when you go from store to store, you’ll see Hdmi cables as high as $150 for a 10-foot cable.  That’s fine except you can go right here and get a 10-foot Hdmi cable for $11.90 with $5.95 Usps priority shipping.  Don’t let your “too-good-to-be-true” radar go off.  One cable isn’t $140 better than the other.  They’re the same and they do the same job.  Talk to any tech-savvy person you know (and savvy in that they actually understand technology, »

Superman Franchise Finds Lawsuits as Debilitating as Kryptonite

25 November 2009 6:39 PM, PST

Who knew that after all these years it wouldn’t be Lex Luthor who ultimately stopped Superman but legal disputes?  According to Anne Thopmson, Warner Brothers wants to do a complete reboot of the series but they need settle with the families of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster because the families will regain the copyright in 2013.  If Warners can work out a deal with the Siegel and Shuster families, then they could merge all the rights and confidently restart the series without worrying about losing the sequels.  Sequels is why we’re experiencing this delay.  As lucrative as a new movie could be, it won’t matter if Warners loses the sequels because even the ridiculous success of this year’s Star Trek which resurrected the franchise, pretty much broke even after all the legal wrangling necessary and investment to get the Enterprise flying again.  But because the »

Interview with It’S Always Sunny In Philadelphia Stars and Co-Creators Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney

25 November 2009 6:00 PM, PST

Even from its pilot episode, “The Gang Gets Racist”, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been one of the most mean-spirited and offensive shows on television.  It’s also been one of the funniest, and it’s only gotten funnier, as well as more mean-spirited and offensive, over the last four seasons.  Now in its fifth season, the show has become one of FX’s biggest hits and they’ve even released a special Christmas episode, A Very Sunny Christmas, which is available now on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download.

Stars and co-creators Glenn Howerton (who plays Dennis Reynolds) and Rob McElhenney (who plays Mac) recently sat down for a conference call where they talk about the show’s success, the controversy surrounding the episode “The Great Recession” which prominently featured Dave & Busters and Coors Light, how they came to create A Very Sunny Christmas, and more.  Fans of »

New Trailer for Daybreakers Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill

25 November 2009 5:30 PM, PST

A new trailer for the vampire-thriller Daybreakers just went online and before you sigh, “Great, another vampire movie,” you should know that I hear it’s a solid little flick and at the very least these vamps don’t look like they glitter when struck by sunlight.  It’s actually got a pretty neat premise: In the year 2019 (apparently the 2010s are going to be really rough for humanity), vampires are now the dominant species on the planet with the remaining humans being farmed for blood.  But with the remaining blood supply dwindling, a vampire scientist (Ethan Hawke) finds himself siding with the human resistance.  Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, the film co-stars Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer but subscribe to the new rule that trailers may no longer end with some screaming “Noooooo!!!”  Daybreakers hits theaters on January 8, 2010.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Review

25 November 2009 4:21 PM, PST

Fantastic Mr. Fox feels like the film that director Wes Anderson has been trying to make ever since his first feature Bottle Rocket.  Anderson’s films have always had the tone of a classic book for young adults.  But what was once a stylish affectation eventually mutated into artistic lethargy.  2007’s The Darjeerling Limited showed that Anderson was now using his style as a crutch instead of a means to effectively tell a story.  But with Fantastic Mr. Fox, based on the classic 1970 Roald Dahl book, Anderson turns what had become his greatest weakness into his greatest strength and makes Fantastic Mr. Fox one of the best films of the year.

Fantastic Mr. Fox opens with a delightful limerick and sets the tone for the rest of the film:

“Boggis and Bunce and Bean, One short, one fat, one lean. These horrible crooks, so different in looks, were nonetheless equally mean. »

The Road Review

25 November 2009 3:58 PM, PST

We’re going to need a word which is harsher than “bleak”.  The word “bleak” does not do justice to The Road, John Hillcoat’s faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel.  Set in an apocalyptic wasteland of nothing but ugly grey, “Man” (Viggo Mortensen) and his son “Boy” (Kodi Smit-McPhee) struggle with survival where the only point is to survive, and that’s not much of a reason.  When suicide is the best thing in the world and the best use of a bullet is to kill your son to make sure he isn’t eaten alive by cannibals, you come to understand that “bleak” just doesn’t get the job done as far as adjectives go.  Neither does “hopeless”, “grim” or “dismal”.  But perhaps the greatest flaw of The Road isn’t its inability to conjure up dark adjectives, but that Hillcoat completely embraces the journey of his characters: pointless. »

New Images from Legion Plus Steve Watches 20 Minutes of the Film

25 November 2009 2:09 PM, PST

Last week I went to Sony Studios for a set visit on Priest.  While I’m embargoed from saying anything on that film, while I was there, we were shown around 20 minutes from Screen Gems upcoming Legion, and we were also provided a number of new images from the film.

If you’re not familiar with Legion, it’s a supernatural action thriller where an out-of-the-way diner becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race.  When God loses faith in Mankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse.  Humanity’s only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner and the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany).   Legion also stars Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Kate Walsh, Adrianne Palicki, Charles S. Dutton and Willa Holland.

Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths Trailer

25 November 2009 12:48 PM, PST

Warner Home Entertainment’s newest animated effort featuring DC Comics Heroes and villains: Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, arrives on DVD February 23rd, 2010.  The film features villains from the classic DC Crime Syndicate.  Check out an image and the trailer after the jump.

Created back when goatees marked your obvious ill intent, the Csa is made up of evil, alternate reality versions of Earth’s own heroes, who didn’t wear masks!  Though the Csa met it’s end in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, they none-the-less returned years later in a classic story arc by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

Like Green Lantern: First Flight and Warner’s other recent DC Comics Home Entertainment entries, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, will carry a rating of PG-13, reminding us that Warner doesn’t just consider these super hero adventures as “strictly for kids”.  Though February seems far away, »

First Official Image and Synopsis for Jonah Hex Starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox

25 November 2009 11:42 AM, PST

The first image from the upcoming comic book adaptation Jonah Hex has landed online and even though it’s only one image, it’s clear that they’re headed in a very clear direction: bad-ass.  And like my grandma always says, “You can’t go wrong with bad-ass.”  It also jibes with the bad-ass footage I saw at Comic-Con.  Warner Bros. is getting the word out that deformed, gun-slinging anti-hero Jonah Hex (played by Josh Brolin) kills people just as easily as you and I would smile, or blink, or breathe.  That would be terrifying were it not so bad-ass.  Also, check out the interviews Steve did at Comic-Con with Josh Brolin and with Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, and director Jimmy HaywardJonah Hex hits theaters on June 18, 2010.

First Two Official Images and the Synopsis from Sylvain White’s The Losers

25 November 2009 11:30 AM, PST

The first two official images and the synopsis from Sylvain White’s The Losers have hit the web.  Both images are typical first look shots in that they don’t tell you anything about the movie except show you what actors are in it.  While I hate boring images like these, I understand launching with them and then getting to the action shots as it gets closer to release.

If you’re not familiar with the movie, the film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Jason Patric, Óscar Jaenada, Idris Elba, Zoë Saldana and Columbus Short.  It’s based on the comic by Andy Diggle and Jock.  Here’s the just released synopsis:

Action Thriller. An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, “The Losers” centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team-Clay, »

First Trailer for Disney’s Prep And Landing

25 November 2009 12:43 AM, PST

Premiering its first footage at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Prep and Landing is Disney’s first computer-animated television special. Based on a idea from Chris Williams (Bolt), it tells the story of two elves, Wayne (Dave Foley) and Lanny (Derek Richardson) who work for the elite North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center. Under the watchful eye of the Command Center Coordinator, Magee (Sarah Chalke), they are advance scouts who prepare homes for Santa’s visits.

Prep and Landing will air December 1 on ABC.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with my brief thoughts on it.

After The Santa Clause 3, I became a little skeptical about Disney’s ability to pull off a good Christmas story. However, with plenty of fun technology, a little high-octane action and, of course, the Spirit of Christmas, this trailer looks great and I am looking forward to watching Prep and Landing next week. »

First Photo and Synopsis for Shrek Forever After

24 November 2009 11:49 PM, PST

Above you can see the first image for the fourth (and supposedly final) Shrek film, Shrek Forever After.  USA Today has the first in-depth synopsis of the movie and apparently the Scottish ogre is going It’s a Wonderful Life.  Apparently Shrek, after getting married and having kids, feels overly domesticated.  He strikes a deal with the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin (voiced by writer Walt Dohrn, not Paul McCartney as IMDb would have you believe), and ends up seeing what the world would be like without him in it.  “That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.”  New voices for the film include Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schaal voicing a pair of ogre-hunting witches and a resistance group led by Jon Hamm as, says director Mike Mitchell (Sky High), the best-looking ogre you’ve ever seen. »
