Comprehensive List of Fictional Restaurants is Surely Useful for Something

I'm sure at some point in your life, you've desperately tried to recall the fried chicken restaurant in Rocko's Modern Life ("Chokey Chicken"), or the bizarro version of the Seinfeld coffee shop ("Reggie's"), to no avail. Now you have a resource to turn to in those moments of desperation. The statistical database site has a freakishly comprehensive list of fictional restaurants, which covers everything from old Nickelodeon cartoons to film. Step off that ledge, dear reader. That drive-in place in the Wonder Years was called "Fatso's". You're welcome. [via Cinematical] »

Votd: Na’Vi Photoshop Timelapse

Now you've got your Na'Vi make-up on (and you look beautiful, I have to say) let's make sure your passport photo is up to date too. Below the break you can see a Photoshop timelapse video in which Peter Ammentorp Lund makes over an image of himself in the likeness of James Cameron's cat folk from Avatar. The video is probably too fast moving to be useful as any kind of tutorial for Photoshop users who are inexperienced enough to not work out how to achieve the effect themselves, but I guess that's not the point. I think this is about acknowledging just what differences there are between Human and Na'Vi facial anatomy or, to put it another way, how similar they actually are. His choice of soundtrack cut is a nice little joke too. Via The Daily What. »

Ghost Rider 2 Tentatively Titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Producer Mike De Luca Offers Some Updates

The last we reported on the Ghost Rider sequel nobody wants, David Goyer had mentioned that the studio was using his 9-year old script as the basis. Our good friend Frosty over at Collider recently got a chance to speak with producer Mike De Luca about the sequel, and came away with a number of updates (which I'm sure the lot of you have been waiting for with bated breath). The film is tentatively titled Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance, and De Luca confirmed that director Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil) and Eva Mendes won't be returning. We also learned that they're looking at the film as a reboot for the franchise (a la Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk), it's currently set in Europe, and there's a possibility it may get the 3D treatment. De Luca also mentioned that he's open to Goyer directing the film, it's all »

Rumor Control: No Cruise/Lautner Pairing; Muse Possibly Soundtracking Clash of the Titans

In the past twenty-four hours a few stories have broken that were either debunked, shown to be partially wrong, or are a bit optimistic. Brendon quickly jumped on top of Universal's denial of alternate cuts of The Wolfman, but here are a couple other items to be critical of. Yesterday, there was news that Taylor Lautner would co-star with Tom Cruise in Northern Lights, which sounded sort of like Top Gun, Jr. Now EW reports that Cruise isn't part of the package, and never was. And, in fact, Nikki Finke (who, like it or not, usually has good info) got the logline wrong, too. Hers was out of date. Here's the current one, via Skydance, the production company: Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, Northern Lights follows four young pilots as they compete against the world’s best. A story of teamwork, sacrifice, loss, and victory, these young aviators »

Polanski’s The Ghost Writer Gets a Limited February Release; Director Asks to be Sentenced in Absentia

As Roman Polanski has been under house arrest in Switzerland, his new film The Ghost Writer is in the final stages of completion and has been picked up for distribution in the United States by Summit Entertainment. Today the company said it would give the film a limited release on February 19, with expansion plans to follow on March 5 and March 19. The Us limited release date is just over a week after the film debuts at the Berlin Film Festival on February 11. [Variety] The film follows a ghostwriter, played by Ewan McGregor, as he uncovers deep secrets that jeopardize his life while working on the memoir of the former British Prime Minister, played by Pierce Brosnan. We've seen a very brief teaser trailer, cut when the film was still called The Ghost, but with this release date should get a trailer any day now. Meanwhile, Polanski's court case »

She’s Out of My League Movie Trailer: Jay Baruchel Experiments with Unfunny Comedy

I like Jay Baruchel. Not based on any deep assessment of his work, but more on the fact that I suspect he's more versatile than his more routine roles make him appear. He's got a bit of an edge, and while he's twitchy, he's also earnest in a way that I can appreciate. Sadly, the trailer for his new comedy She's Out of My League, in which a hot girl (Alice Eve) inexplicably displays an interest in a put-upon nebbish (Baruchel), makes it look like one of his routine roles. At best. How's that for a sales pitch? I can safely say that I hate this trailer. Took me three times to even get through it once, and I finally watched it all without a single laugh. There are some of you who'll like it, and more power to you. Someone should like it. But unless there's a lot more »

Jay Leno Jokes About Cancellation Rumors

On The Jay Leno Show tonight, Jay Leno made a few jokes, mostly at NBC's expense, in response to rumors that the network would be canceling his talk show after a bout of low ratings. While I'm not normally a fan of Leno, as I believe he's too much of a kiss ass and the definition of "safe" comedy, tonight he was in rare form.  You can watch a couple highlights after the jump, or read the transcript below. Happy Birthday to Katie Couric, It's her birthday today. She Left NBC for another network. I have to give her a call to see how that is working out. As you may have heard, there is a rumor floating around that we were canceled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far no one has said anything to me. But Kev, if we did get canceled it »

Zombieland Screenwriters Hired For GI Joe Sequel

Update: IESB is now reporting the Paramount Pictures has hired Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen a sequel to GI Joe: Rise of Cobra. Reese and Wernick recently signed on to pen Deadpool for Fox/Marvel, and might be the perfect scribes to invent some over the top stupid action for a GI Joe sequel. As I said in the Deadpool post, I'm a big fan of Reese and Wernick's work on Zombieland. I don't think people give enough credit to the clever and hilarious screenplay when talking about the success of that film. Original post follows after the jump. After GI Joe: Rise of Cobra became a box office hit, Paramount Picture's vice chairman Rob Moore said that a sequel would "soon go into development." Collider has learned that a screenwriter has been hired for the project, and Paramount is eager to get a second film in production. »

Full Cast for Steven Soderbergh’s Knockout: Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Dennis Quaid and Michael Douglas

When Steven Soderbergh announced that he would direct a spy/action film starring Mma fighter Gina Carano written by his The Limey screenwriter Lem Dobbs, the reaction was positive. Now that the name supporting cast is being revealed, I'm curious to hear what people have to say. Personally, each news item has elevated my interest. There are also some new details on the script, as the original idea for the film has been reworked slightly, though it is still very much in the action/thriller vein. Movieline broke the first casting news today, that Inglourious Basterds' Michael Fassbender would be seen in the film. "I’ll be starting work with Steven Soderbergh in the beginning of February in Dublin," he told the site. That scoop prompted The Playlist to chime in with additional casting news: also in the mix are Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and Dennis Quaid. (Hey, two news stories for Quaid today! »

First Look: Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton in Peter Morgan’s The Special Relationship

Playwright/screenwriter Peter Morgan and actor Michael Sheen have teamed for two films featuring former British Prime Minister Tony Blair: The Deal and The Queen. Their third project together is The Special Relationship, which chronicles the working relationship between Blair and Bill Clinton in the late '90s. The photo above is the first look at Dennis Quaid in costume as Clinton. It's not as eerily convincing as Josh Brolin was as George W. Bush in W., but Quaid looks fine. Morgan's script is directed by Richard Loncraine (Richard III) with Helen McRory and Mark Bazeley reprising their roles from The Queen. Hope Davis appears as Hilary Clinton. [Dark Horizons] »

Sony to Release First 3D Movie on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced on Thursday that it will begin to release 3D movies on Blu-ray Disc worldwide for the first time, beginning this summer with the computer animated release Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. And I'm not talking about the paper red and blue glasses that you might have gotten with some past DVD and Blu-ray releases. This new disc will coincide with the release of Sony Electronics' 3D compatible Bravia LCD televisions and 3D compatible Blu-ray disc players, essentially brining the digital 3d experience of recent theatrical releases into your living room. Additional 3D Blu-ray titles are expected to appear this summer from Sony. Look for an announcement this spring. I wonder if the 3D version of the film will be included on the regular Blu-ray release, or if Sony plans to release the 3D versions as their own standalone releases. I would hope that it »

Willem Dafoe Says John Carter of Mars Starts Filming in London Next Week

Willem Dafoe is out on the publicity rounds for Daybreakers, and fielding questions from i09 about Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars in which he'll be playing Tars Tarkas, a ten foot tall martian warrior. There's some things he would talk about - "I saw [Stanton] recently because we start in London, for studio stuff. I start next week", "I think officially production starts the 18th", "[Stanton] showed me the different variations of how they will shoot it, the kind of equipment I'll have to wear, the different times I won't have to wear certain kinds of equipment and all that", ; and other things he wouldn't reveal, like whether or not he'll be wearing prosthetic arms or putting on a 'special voice' Previously we expected shooting to start last November in Utah. »

Directors Guild of America Nominations

The last big bellwether for Oscar nominations is the nomination set for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film from the Directors Guild of America. The DGA nominations are the best indicator of what films and directors will be on the shortlist for the Best Director Oscar. Before the Best Picture Oscar field was widened to ten, the DGA noms were also a reasonable indicator of what films would be in contention for Best Picture, too. The DGA announced the five nominated directors today, and the list generally conforms to expectations created by other recent awards and nominations. The five nominees this year are: James Cameron for Avatar, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, Lee Daniels for Precious, Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds and Jason Reitman for Up in the Air. DGA president Taylor Hackford said in a statement: The DGA award is especially meaningful to directors because it is decided »

MTV Planning Dawn of the Dead Spin-Off TV Series

The last time George Romero's Dawn of the Dead went out for a reworking, pretty much the entire blogosphere shared my skepticism. Luckily, once Zack Snyder's remake finally came out, most of us were satisfied that while he hadn't ousted the original from it's Best Zombie Movie Ever pedestal, he'd actually served up a film well worth caring about and taking seriously. Snyder even received great acclaim for the opening movement of the picture, and I can honestly say that I really love those first ten minutes or so in particular. Some controversy remained, however, primarily over Snyder's decision to have his undead be fast runners, seemingly ignoring all common sense about what kinds of stress and strain a rotting corpse could take. Now, MTV are planning to create a spin-off TV series licensed from the Romero film. Will they be going for the fast or slow zombies? »

Saoirse Ronan in Talks for Teen Killing-Machine Movie Hanna

Some people probably saw this coming when Joe Wright signed on to direct, but I have to admit that I didn't. Atonement's Saoirse Ronan is now in negotiations to take the title role in Wright's upcoming action-thriller Hanna. The film is a kind of Nikita-meets-Leon, Kick-Ass-meets-Bourne mash-up about a 14 year old girl who has finely honed killing skills. Calling her an assassin is slightly off the mark I think, but it does get something like the right idea across. Once upon a time, Danny Boyle was attached to direct. Having read a draft of Seth Lochhead's screenplay I can see how brilliantly Ronan fits the role. The specific requirements aren't too exacting - she's just a year or two older than the character but looks young enough, and she has those big and innocent eyes that would play off against her violent acts in the way you'd expect. »

A Green Light for Green Lantern

There wasn't any doubt that Warner Bros.' Green Lantern would be going forward, but the film now has an official greenlight, says visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas. "Green Lantern got the official green light today," Goulekas announced on her blog. "And not a second too soon - only 10 weeks out from shooting!" While plenty of work has been done on the film, the green light allows money to really flow out to the production, so Goulekas and her crew now have two and a half months to get things together for a film that may include up to 1300 effects shots. [via SuperHeroHype] Martin Campbell will direct Green Lantern, which stars Ryan Reynolds and is scheduled for release on June 17, 2011. »
