Gay of the Dead #28: The Lair, Season Three (Part 2 of 2)

18 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST

What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.

Sean Abley: We’ve actually met very briefly—I moderated the Lair panel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in La months ago. I was incredibly intimidated by meeting you. You’re Sybil Danning! But you turned out to be very sweet, and even asked me if it went Ok afterwards. You’ve now worked with my friend Dylan Vox twice, »

These titles join IFC’s growing lineup of upcoming genre titles, which also includes such recent acquisitions as Nicolas Winding Refn’s brutal Viking film Valhalla Rising and Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher’s zombie opus La Horde.

New to the IFC roster are the Australian chiller Coffin Rock (pictured) and the Spanish production Paintball. Coffin Rock, written and directed by Rupert Glasson, is about a young married woman (Lisa Chappell) who drunkenly sleeps with a stranger; when she becomes pregnant, the one-night stand begins a psychopathic campaign to prove the baby is his. Robert Taylor, Sam Parsonson and The Cars That Ate ParisTerry Camilleri co-star. In Paintball, directed by Daniel Benmayor from a Mario Schoendorff script, a group of contestants »

A Conversation with MacHete's Electra Avellan

16 November 2009 11:10 PM, PST

I was fortunate enough to meet Electra Avellan at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida recently, and she was kind enough to talk with me about her career, inspirations, favorite movies and actors, and also what it's like to be a part of one of the most famous film families working in cinema today.

Jason Anders/Fangoria: So let's talk about the new film you will be appearing in, Machete, which will be directed by Robert Rodriguez; the film is based on the fake movie trailer of the same name from the Grindhouse feature film, and will star Danny Trejo supported by an all-star cast. What can you tell me about the production of this film, and also, what is it like working with family members such as Robert and your sister Elise on set?

Electra Avellan: I can't talk much about the production of the film. Not yet. »

2012 (Film Review)

16 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST

The world ends not with a bang or a whimper but a resounding 'Meh' in Roland Emmerich's 2012, the last and least of his end of the world film series. Emmerich, who first made a splash with Independence Day, a hipster update of George Pal's War Of The Worlds, returns to Pal's work with 2012.

An uncredited updating of Pal's When Worlds Collide, 2012 has the world coming to an end as Earth's core heats up creating floods that will soon kill all life on Earth. We follow a lowly scientist (an interesting Chiwetel Ejiofor), the Us President (Danny Glover, who seems to blandly repeat Morgan Freeman's dialogue from the superior Deep Impact), then jump to a down on his luck sci-fi writer/limo driver (a puffy John Cusack), his perky, estranged wife (Amanda Peet--a great actress given nothing to do), two movie-cute kids (One of whom is named 'Noah', »

Gay of the Dead #27: The Lair, Season Three (Part 1 of 2)

16 November 2009 10:27 PM, PST

The Guilty Pleasure Fairy visited me in my sleep recently and left The Lair: Season Three under my pillow. Woo-hoo! The Fred Olen Ray vampire-sex-club soap opera is back—now with 100 percent more Sybil Danning! Courtesy of the friendly folks at here! TV (I really wish they’d just break down and capitalize “Here”—seriously), which is currently airing the series on-demand, I had a chance to chat briefly with a few of the stars of this new season.

First up is Frankie Valenti, or, as he’s more widely known, adult-film star Johnny Hazzard. His bad-boy image has served him well in the adult world since 2003, and he has won several “Grabby” and GayVN Awards for his performances in videos like Detention and Wrong Side Of The Tracks. Season two of The Lair was his first straight acting gig, and he returns in the third as Tim, having »

Pagan | On Black Wings (Musick Review)

16 November 2009 10:22 PM, PST

When I initially received the assignment of covering the new Pagan album On Black Wings I was a little unsure of what to expect. Sure, I invested sometime browsing the net, scanning myspace, reading any back stories I could find. Sometimes however, that's just not adequate intake to form a valid judgment. As I began to study On Black Wings, I realized that this is definitely one of those cases. No music browsing or reading could possibly prepare me for what On Black Wings offers. Which in truth plays out more like the score of the scariest film you've ever seen rather than an album. I personally love that element.

Just about every imaginable musical genre is exercised throughout the course of the record. There's loads of metal, goth, rock, hell there's even some serious hip hop and classical tones to the music as well. It's a remarkable blend of »

The Stepfather (DVD Review)

16 November 2009 10:14 PM, PST

The Stepfather is a cult classic from the 80’s that has the American Family Ideal battling itself from within.  Terry O’Quinn (TV’s Lost), takes to task defending Norman Rockwell’s American status quo killing anyone (homebuyers, psychiatrists, stepdaughters) in his way that detracts or questions his vision.  He is most frightening because he stands in plain view as a family man and local house salesman promoting family life.  The opening scene sets the tone as O’Quinn leaves his house for work, whistling all the while, even tidying up the hallway outside a silent, bloody corpse filled family living room, the film’s goriest scene.  We see him change appearances, dump his old identity, and head off to find another family.  The audience waits in suspense for this “ticking time bomb” to snap when the new family doesn’t stand up to his idyllic measure.
