Jaimie Alexander Tweets About Thor (Some More)

Actress Jaimie Alexander has been one of the most faithful insider "tweeters" when it comes to updating comic book movie fans about the latest comic-to-movie adaptation coming out of Marvel Studios. A month ago, she used her Twitter account to announce the start of her stunt training for director Kenneth Branagh's live-action production of Thor, based on the comic book character from Marvel Comics.

In recent Tweets, Alexander has commented on everything from how she "can't stop staring at" the arms of the movie's star, Chris Hemsworth, to the guilt she felt over "accidentally punching Fandral" (played by Stuart Townsend) in the stomach. In her latest Thor tweet, Alexander debunked a recent rumor about the actor said to be cast in the role of Balder the Brave, a mainstay of the Thor comic book series and one of the few remaining supporting characters yet to be cast.

Bryan Singer Details X-Men: First Class

Just a day after Bryan Singer announced he was returning to the X-Men franchise to direct X-Men: First Class, Singer has followed up with more details about the upcoming prequel.

This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain. Already a year into development, First Class's first script was written by Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz. But Singer has decided to start from scratch, and finalized a deal with Fox after handing them a detailed treatment that Singer wrote himself.

Whether it's Batman, Lord of the Rings, or Star Trek, if the characters are good, you want to see …

Hangover Sequel to Take Place in Thailand?

The Hangover director Todd Phillips has already stated that the script for The Hangover 2 is half-complete and won't be set in Las Vegas. Chud reports that the sequel could in fact take place in Thailand. Apparently, Thailand was a destination that Phillips was going to use for the abandoned Old School sequel.

With the script still incomplete, no location is certain, and until Thailand is confirmed the setting will still be just a rumor. However, it does seem like a good place to wake up after a long bender.

Hangover 2 will reunite stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms, and will open on Memorial Day weekend in 2011.

A Few More Peeks at Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

18 December 2009 4:01 AM, PST

With Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief set to hit theaters February 12, 2010, the promotional campaign for the movie has cranked into higher gear a bit with a new international trailer.

Not all that much new footage here, but we do get our first good look at the more horsey half of Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, the centaur who is Percy's teacher and mentor.

This scene is also included in a new TV spot for the film, but the latest poster instead spotlights some of the impressive water-wielding powers that Percy (Logan Lerman) has acquired by virtue of being the son of Poseidon.

Laurence Fishburne Added to Predators Cast

18 December 2009 2:35 AM, PST

Another A-list talent has reportedly been added to the increasingly impressive cast of Robert Rodriguez's production of Predators. According to Shock Till You Drop (Styd), Laurence Fishburne will join Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody in the Nimród Antal-directed sequel to Predator (ignoring the original sequel, Predator 2).

It should be noted, however, that Styd does not cite a source for the information, and "Roland," the character Fishburne is said to be playing, is not mentioned in an early script review. It should also be noted that Predators was supposed to begin filming last month, so the addition of Fishburne at this stage is somewhat surprising.

Mark Strong Discusses His John Carter, Robin Hood, and Kick-Ass Characters

18 December 2009 2:29 AM, PST

Actor Mark Strong may not be a "name" actor now, but that's likely to change in the near future. Strong, who already has an impressive resume of movies, has just finished filming or is preparing to film scenes for four major motion pictures — Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Kick-Ass, and John Carter of Mars.

Strong recently spoke about John Carter director Andrew Stanton, whom he called "a genius." And, in a lengthy phone interview with Collider, Strong discussed several of his upcoming roles, including his part in John Carter, which he called "integral" to the planned trilogy of films.

I play a character called Matai Shang and he is the ruler of a group of people called the [Therns] who are like the old Olympian Gods. They exist — people aren't really sure if they exist, but basically he's a master of the universe. They travel 'round keeping order in the universe. So, …

Bryan Singer To Direct X-Men: First Class

18 December 2009 1:20 AM, PST

Leave it to Bryan Singer to upstage an Avatar premiere by accidentally slipping the news that he was indeed retuning to the X-Men franchise. While talking about upcoming projects, Singer said he will direct the prequel to the X-Men trilogy, X-Men: First Class.

I'm ramping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class origins picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited.

While it looks like First Class won't go into production anytime soon, fans have to be pleased with Singer's return. While he works on Jack the Giant Killer, the First Class script will get another draft from Street Kings writer Jamie Moss. The O.C.'s Josh Schwartz wrote the original draft.

The cast of Thor is filling out just in time to start production in mid-January. Variety reports that Rene Russo has joined the Kenneth Branagh production in the role of Frigga, wife of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and step-mother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

Russo isn't the only one joining the cast. Joseph Gatt (Pulse) announced on his website that Gatt was "prepping for his most prominent job to date: a (secret) role in the forthcoming Marvel Studios film Thor, slated for release in 2011." Speculation has Gatt cast in the role of The Executioner, though the character is not confirmed to be in the movie.

Josh Cox (Last House on the Left) and Troy Brenna (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has also joined the cast in unspecified roles.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? Reviews

17 December 2009 4:06 AM, PST

By now you've certainly seen the trailer for Did You Hear About the Morgans?, and if you're like us, were probably wondering why the jokes were missing, and any chemistry between leads Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, too. It's apparently because this movie just isn't very good.

"...has a few laughs."

John Anderson, Variety

"...an all-too-familiar romantic comedy."

— Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

"What possible reason was there for anyone to make Did You Hear About the Morgans? Or should I say 'remake,' because this movie has been made and over and over again, and oh, so much better."

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"...dismal..."

— Scott Tobias, Onion Av Club

"Pure, communal silence can be a wonderful thing, and if you haven't experienced any lately, I commend you to see the first available screening of the new romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans?"

Taylor Swift to Star in Supergirl Movie?

17 December 2009 1:33 AM, PST

It's only an unsubstantiated rumor at this point, but Ireland On-Line is reporting that "a source" has revealed that pop country singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is being considered to play Supergirl in a new live-action movie supposedly in development.

A number of young stars are being mentioned for the title role in a Supergirl movie and possible TV spin-off and Taylor is top of that list. She has all the right elements to be a positive role model to young girls.

In the DC comic books, Supergirl's origin has changed many times, and she was even killed off at one point. As in earlier incarnations, the current comic book Supergirl is Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman and one of the last survivors of the doomed planet Krypton. Helen Slater played Kara Zor-El in the forgettable 1984 Supergirl movie, and Laura Vandervoort portrayed Supergirl on TV's Smallville.

Harry Potter Stars Named Top-Grossing Actors by Guinness Book

17 December 2009 1:22 AM, PST

Daniel Radcliffe and his Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson have been crowned the top-grossing male and female actors by The Guinness Book of World Records. Radcliffe was added to the latest edition, which debuted in September, as the "Highest-Grossing Actor of the Decade," with a per-movie average of $558 million. Watson won the award for "Highest Average Box-Office Gross for an Actress," with a per-movie average of $753.7 million.

Other notable Hollywood winners include Angelina Jolie as "Most Powerful Actress" for the second year in a row and Johnny Depp as "Most Powerful Actor," supplanting Jolie's husband, Brad Pitt, who won the title last year. Former couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman earned the dubious awards of "Most Overpaid Actor" and "Most Overpaid Actress," respectively.

The pop culture phenomenon Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwick, earned the award for "Highest-Grossing Movie by a Female Director," having raked in more than $380 million worldwide.

Mark Strong Praises John Carter of Mars Director

17 December 2009 1:15 AM, PST

The casting process is still underway for two-time Academy Award-winning director Andrew Stanton's live-action John Carter of Mars adaptation, but two of the principal actors have already commented on the "mind-blowing" pre-production designs. Back in October, Willem Dafoe, who will portray Tars Tarkas, a four-armed, nine-foot-tall Martian, used the phrase to describe "the designs and things."

And in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, actor Mark Strong used the same phrase when discussing the storyboards. He also spoke very highly of Stanton, whose previous movies include A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, and Wall-e.

[Stanton's] a genius. He's such a good storyteller. When I met him and he showed me the storyboards, the ideas for the sets and the designs for the characters, it's just absolutely mind-blowing. I can't wait to get involved with it. I said to him, how do you feel about live action? And he said it's going to be easy. …

Rob Marshall Talks About Directing Pirates 4

17 December 2009 1:06 AM, PST

Rob Marshall seems an unlikely candidate to direct the fourth Pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The Chicago and Nine director told ComingSoon that no one was more "surprised" at the hiring than he was.

I was so surprised they called me. It was Johnny Depp and Jerry Bruckheimer. Jerry called me, but Johnny was interested in working with me. It's a wonderful thing when something like that happens, so we sat and met and he could not have been more lovely. He's the nicest man. I've been very lucky to work with some great people and he's one of them. So I could tell that we could maybe do this, and then they offered it to me.

We're still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen. If it happens — I think Johnny's doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring (that's The Tourist) — so if it happens, …
