Oscar Eye: Predicting The Winners After The Critics And Globes Had Their Say
2 hours ago
Looking at my Oscar column from last week, it's hard to believe I was ever so young... so doubtful about the quality of Avatar, so convinced of Up in the Air as the potential runaway favorite, so certain that Matt Damon's Invictus performance would quickly be forgotten.
It's been a very big couple of days in the Oscar prognosticating biz, and let's start with the big one: the Golden Globe nominations. As always, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made some whackadoo choices sure to not make it through to the Oscars-- Tobey Maguire for Brothers, A Serious Man shut out of screenplay, Julia Roberts for Duplicity-- but coming on the heels of the weekend's critics awards, it gives us a lot to think about. The Globes' Best Drama nominees of Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds Precious, and Up in the Air all seem like safe contenders for Best Picture,

Joyous Youtube: Hollywood Teaches Geography
4 hours ago
The masterminds behind Seven Minute Sopranos and Google Wave Cinema have given us a fresh new glimpse at the hard edged world of high school geography. Cobbled together from clips from 100 of Hollywood's finest films (including Oscar-worthy Dumb and Dumber), Hollywood Teaches Geography somehow was able to find characters saying the names of 114 countries and slap them all together in an entertaining six and a half minute video.
There's a fancy little feature called closed captioning that will help any of you cinematic amateurs keep up with the pile of movies getting thrown your way. Head on over to Whirled Interactive to scope out some more clever and fun videos, but for now, enjoy countries and curse words.

Carl Rinsch Taking Over The Black Lagoon Remake
5 hours ago
Carl Rinsch is the man who would be a Scott. The potential son-in-law-to-be of Ridley came very, very close to directing the new Alien prequel, until Fox decided that only the original director would do. But don't cry too hard for Rinsch; according to The Los Angeles Times, Rinsch has been hired to direct the remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, after Breck Eisner bailed on the project earlier this year.
The project is coming from Universal, which also has another horror remake, The Wolfman, coming earlier this year. Rinsch's commercial work has gotten him some attention over in Europe, but his talents are largely unproven so far. Is the monster mash the best way to go for his debut? I guess we're all about to find out whether we like it or not.

Thor Writers Trade Hammers For Fangs
In today's cinematic climate, what's the one thing you would say Hollywood is lacking? Your obvious answer is 'vampire movies' since we've been in a veritable vampire drought for the past four years. Well fret not, dear reader, because according to THR Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz are set to sate your bloodthirst with Damn Nation.
Originally published by Dark Horse in 2005, Damn Nation was a three issue mini-series which followed survivors of an attack on the U.S. by .cruel nocturnal carnivores,. which is a really fancy way of saying vampires. The government is forced to relocate to London while scientists, doctors and generals search for a solution. Essentially it's 30 Days of Night in a 28 Days Later-type setting.
The writing team of Miller and Stentz are just coming off penning the script for Kenneth Branagh's Thor, set for release May 20, 2011. They've also lent their hands to the J.

Kristen Stewart's K-11 Project Delayed Again
6 hours ago
Kristen Stewart spent the first 15 years of her life starring in movies made by her mother-- you know, the movies about dance recitals and piano concerts and "Look what I can do!" home stunts. Now that she's a megastar, is she really obligated to keep stepping in front of the camera at her mom's bidding?
Apparently not. Stewart had planned to star for her director mother Jules Mann-Stewart in K-11, but according to Gossip Cop, the planned January shoot has been postponed due both to Stewart's schedule and a few other factors. Stewart will be having a busy enough January as it is, with The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys both premiering at Sundance.
K-11 will also star Nikki Reed, who rather unmemorably plays one of the Twilight vampires. In the film both Stewart and Reed will play transsexuals who wind up in the K-11 unit of lockup , where

Mel Gibson Jetting Off To Mexico For Next Project
6 hours ago
If you haven't been following the many activities and projects of Mel Gibson (and I do not blame you for this), let me get you up to speed. Right now he's in New York filming a movie called The Beaver, which has invited many hilarious puns on the Internet and has provided some uncomfortable set photos to boot. Just yesterday it was announced that Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio would be suiting up in Viking helmets for some kind of period drama, but not so fast-- there may be a trip to Mexico in the cards first.
Production Weekly is reporting that Gibson will first be starring in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, which will start filming in March in Veracruz, Mexico. You may remember some news a while back about Gibson planning a movie shoot at a prison in Veracruz, and though at the time we seemed to assume

Golden Globe Nominees Announced; Basterds & Up In The Air Win Big
7 hours ago
The Golden Globe nominees were announced today, with Inglourious Basterds, Nine, Up in the Air and Avatar snagging many of the top nominations. Check out the full list of movie nominees below, but first, a little discussion:
A few fairly large surprises included in there, though several categories-- Best Supporting Actress, and all of the Best Drama nominees-- look like solid bets for the Oscar as well. Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were all nominated from Invictus, but the picture failed to make it in Best Drama. Precious was nominated for Best Drama but Lee Daniels failed to get a nomination for Directing. The Hurt Locker cleaned up in Drama, Director and Screenplay, but Jeremy Renner was curiously, shockingly swapped with Tobey Maguire from Brothers, a performance that pretty much everyone had already managed to forget about.
Notable snubs: The Lovely Bones left out entirely except for Stanley

Sorry, Spidey Fans: Tobey Won't Be Playing The Hobbit
7 hours ago
We excitedly told you just yesterday that Tobey Maguire was suddenly in the running to play Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming movie version of The Hobbit. Well, it really only took a few hours to turn that rumor down. Movieline chatted with Maguire's publicist, who emphatically stated that, absolutely not, ".This is false!.
Well, I guess that answers it. The folks over at The One Ring also got an update from an anonymous source saying the rumor is false. I guess the Latino Review team has some explaining to do, given that they're the ones who broke the story. But really, just add it to the pile of endless Hobbit rumors from the past four years.

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood Trailer
Not since Watchmen have I seen this much slow motion in a trailer. Say hello to the first ever teaser for Ridley Scott.s Robin Hood, courtesy of our wily cousins up north, the Canadians. Yep, it.s an international trailer which means we.re likely to get a second version for me and my fellow domestics soon. I hope they speed that one up.
More than anything Robin Hood looks like Ridley.s last attempt at a sword and armor movie, Kingdom of Heaven. If you saw it, you know that.s not a good thing. But it has Russell Crowe who, almost inherently, kicks all kinds of ass. Well except in that other Ridley Scott movie where he mostly sat around drinking wine all day. Whoops. Gladiator has never seemed so far away. Check out the international trailer for Robin Hood below:

Huge Sex And The City 2 Spoiler?
So we.ve gotten images and even a poster for Sex and the City 2, but what no one seems to have seen is a proper plot synopsis for the much anticipated gal pal sequel. Some have speculated that it could be about a Carrie pregnancy, but the celeb hounds at Gossip Cop have other ideas.
Stop reading if you.re not interested in spoilers. This could be a big one.
According to their sources, the movie may involve infidelity. They say Carrie Bradshaw.s former flame, Aidan Shaw, is in the movie and .he and Carrie have an indiscretion.. Let me translate for those of you who can.t afford two-hundred dollar shoes. That means she cheats on her husband, a certain Mr. Big. That .indiscretion. leads to what they.re calling .a Big move on the part of Mr. Big.. A big move out of the house perhaps?

The Cameron Inside: How Avatar Echoes Everything He's Ever Done
13 hours ago
For months we've been hearing snarky fan rants about how unoriginal Avatar is, how it looks like Fern Gully in space, Dances with Wolves with blue people-- really, just pick your comparison. But the truth about Avatar isn't that James Cameron is ripping off other people, he's ripping off himself. In the same way you know Titanic is on cable the moment you hear that pan flute coming from the other room, a James Cameron movie is unmistakable, and fear not-- Avatar is through and through a James Cameron movie.
So how do you know if you want to watch Avatar? Just figure out how much it's like your favorite Cameron movie and decide from there! To help you out, we've gone back through Cameron's greatest hits (sorry, Piranha II fans, you'll have to draw your own comparisons) and figured out exactly how much Avatar resembles each of them. Ortega Directing Movie Version Of In The Heights
17 hours ago
When Kenny Ortega bailed on the Footloose remake a few months back, it seemed that he was going for a more highbrow career, maybe getting away from musicals entirely. Well, we got the highbrow part is right, but Ortega will be using his skills as a musical director to adapt the Broadway smash In the Heights for the screen.
Heights, which won the Best Musical Tony in 2007, was originally composed and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also starred in the original Broadway run as Usnavi, a bodega owner living in upper Manhattan and narrating the daily lives of the people in his neighborhood. Miranda will reprise his role and produce the film, which if you've seen the musical, you'll know is the only possible choice-- kid has charisma like crazy. Quiara Alegria Hudes, who wrote the play's book, will also write the movie's script.
It's necessary for me to note

Just about everyone on earth is a vampire and with so few humans left, the blood supply is dwindling. Who do you turn to? The Bromley Marks blood bank of course. With less than a month to go before the January 8th release of the futuristic vampire film Daybreakers, you must act fast and learn everything you can to ensure a better future. That.s where the website CaptureHumans.com can help. It.s an informational site powered by the Bromley Marks Education Division designed to show you how the company can help control the blood shortage.
Actually, it.s just a cutesy video that syncs up with your Facebook account. A few seconds into the video, it shows photos of humans to keep an eye out for in your area. One of my photos was of this dog that looked awfully familiar. It took me a few seconds, but

Apparition Brings You The Runaways In March
18 hours ago
Just a few hours ago we posted the first image from Floria Sigismondi.s The Runaways. Well, it looks like you.ll get to see some more even if you aren.t attending the film.s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in June. Apparition has acquired domestic distribution rights to the film and has set a March 19th release.
The announcement also provides a more detailed synopsis than the one in our previous post:
The film follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band

Sherlock Holmes Midnight Screenings Cancelled
19 hours ago
I.m a big fan of midnight screenings and, since I.m a night owl and up anyway, I see a lot of movies that way. Over the past few years they.ve become more commonplace, a lot of theaters run midnight screenings for almost every major release, and even some less major ones. But there won.t be any for Sherlock Holmes.
Warner Bros. announced today that they.re cancelling plans to screen Sherlock in midnight screenings on Thursday December 24th. There won.t be any and so, we night owls, will have to hang out together at an early morning 10am screenings or something. I.m not sure what I.ll do with myself. I guess I could try sleeping. I hear that works for some people.
In the case of Holmes I suppose it makes sense. The movie opens on Christmas Day, which means any potential midnight

Watch Ten Minutes Of Sherlock Holmes
While everyone.s obsessing over Avatar, it might be easy to forget about Sherlock Holmes, the holiday.s other big release. It.s the movie you aren.t required to wear 3D glasses to and, while James Cameron might think that.s a negative, after all those whiz-bang special effects sitting down to watch a guy in a mustache solve murders might be kind of a relief.
Below we have eight lengthy clips from what is sure to be one of the year.s most purely entertaining movies. Nearly ten minutes in total, straight from Sherlock Holmes and onto your computer. Test your observational powers and click play:

Prince Caspian To Star In Killing Bono
Could the latest trend in Hollywood be rock star biopics? Well, kind of. We.ve got The Runways on the way and now there.s Killing Bono, a film based on the book Killing Bono: I Was Bono.s Doppelganger. The thing is, it depicts the band from an unusual perspective.
I.ve never read the book, but after reading a handful of reviews, the general consensus seems to be that it.s less about U2 and more about author Neil McCormick.s jealousy of Bono.s success. According to Variety, the film will be .chronicling the early days of U2 from a rival band.s perspective..
Chronicles of Narnia's Ben Barnes is set to star and, based on that mini-synopsis, I.d guess he.s not playing Bono, rather McCormick. It.s also been announced that Breaking Bad.s Krysten Ritter will be co-starring as well as Charlie Cox

Muppets Ring In The Holiday With Carol of the Bells
22 hours ago
Over the past couple weeks, I have watched The Muppets cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" about 20 times. Few things have the ability to make me truly nostalgic, but suddenly I was seven years old, watching the Muppet Show in my pajamas. While we are still a couple of years away from Jason Segel's The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, Jim Henson's creations seem ready to make a comeback now, and this time they are doing it Christmas style.
The MuppetsStudio channel on Youtube has released a new video, this time featuring The Swedish Chef, Beaker and Animal singing "Carol of the Bells." Now, these three aren't exactly the most coherent group, but they still rock the house none the less. Move over Trans Siberian Orchestra, The Muppets are encroaching on your territory. Enjoy the video below.

First Official Look At Kristen Stewart As Joan Jett
22 hours ago
With the Sundance Film Festival right around the corner, the first image from one of the most anticipated flicks on the lineup, The Runaways, has hit web. Naturally, it shows off stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, respectively. Collider also posted the film.s official synopsis:
Of all the bands to come out of the 1970s Los Angeles music scene, The Runaways are by far the most uniquely fascinating. This is partially due to their music but more so to the fact that they were teenage girls whose wild and reckless lifestyle was the stuff of legend.
Focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead vocalist Cherie Currie as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record-label woes, the film chronicles the band.s formation as well as their meteoric rise under the malevolent eye of an abusive manager.
Thanks

First Look At Robert Downey And Zach Galifianakis In Due Date
23 hours ago
Yes: the film's outline is essentially the same as Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis involved, why is anybody complaining?
This week Entertainment Weekly published the first image from Todd Philips' follow-up to The Hangover, Due Date, and while it doesn't give us very much (they are driving a car? That's absurd. Galifianakis has a beard? That's just bizarre), we now know that there is a dog involved. That's something, right?
Check out the picture below and to see it even bigger check out a high-res scan posted by a fan on Livejournal.
