Top 10 Horror Films of 2009

25 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

Its that time gang where we look back at the best films of 2009 and this go around I want to look at the best horror films of 2009. In an effort to be as transparent as I can I should point out not every film on my list had a theatrical release in 2009. Some had theatrical releases either small or internationally before but never really got wide release until hitting dvd in 2009. So for that reason I have taken some leeway with my list.

There are tons of great horror films out there and I wish I had seen them all but here is 10 that I think stood out from the crowd and are worthy of being added to any fans collection!

Trick R treat: Trick R Treat was released into various niche film festivals and got rave reviews from horror fans and critics and when it hit dvd it lived up to all the hype. »

Terry Gilliam Interview, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

22 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

The announcement of a new Terry Gilliam film tends to evoke a lively mixture of excitement, curiosity and not a little apprehension. The visionary director has the reputation of a singularly creative maverick, but the transition of his creative projects from the page to the screen has not always been easy.

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Gilliam to talk about his new film, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.” The modern-day fantasy adventure about a traveling theatre troupe stars Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Christopher Plummer, Verne Troyer, Andrew Garfield, Tom Waits and Lily Cole.

The tragic loss of actor Heath Ledger during the production threatened closedown, but Gilliam fought to reconfigure the story without losing the fine performance which his star had already committed to film. Thanks to Depp and Law who generously agreed to help finish the role that Ledger had started, the film was able to be completed. »

The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired Us rights to George A. Jackass 3D

21 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

All I can say is oh dear I am not sure I want to watch Jackass in 3D. The third installment of Jackass from Paramount Pictures and MTV Films will hit theaters on October 15, 2010, this time in eye-popping 3D. Johnny Knoxville and the boys will begin shooting in late January with Dickhouse Production’s Jeff Tremaine at the helm and producing alongside Spike Jonze and Knoxville.

The addition of 3D to the new film will raise the mayhem factor to new heights, promises star/producer Johnny Knoxville.  “We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt. We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension.”

2002’s “Jackass: The Movie” earned more than more than $64 million and was heralded as “a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle, but also hilarious and provocative. God help me, thumbs up” by esteemed critic Richard Roeper. »

Sherlock Holmes (2009) Movie Review

21 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

Both Sherlock Holmes and Guy Ritchie are known for their associations with the criminal underground; Holmes as the brilliant and relentless pursuer of criminal mystery in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s timeless stories, and Ritchie as the filmmaker and foul-mouthed bard of London’s underworld.  Ritchie’s big-screen interpretation of Sherlock Holmes is fun, witty, action-packed, and rated PG-13 in the Us.  Ergo, while it’s a very good film in its own right, it’s a poor Sherlock Holmes story and an even worse Guy Ritchie film.

Sherlock Holmes picks up well into the exploits of the eponymous detective and his stalwart compatriot, Dr. Watson.  So well into their exploits, in fact, that Watson has become somewhat fed up with Holmes’s eccentric shenanigans.  As a new case emerges however, one seemingly rooted in black magic and apocalyptic portents, Holmes and Watson match wits with a man who has »

Avatar Movie Review

21 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

Sigourney Weaver said in an interview that James Cameron created Avatar to be the ultimate movie he would have wanted to see as a 14 year old kid, and in that respect he has absolutely succeeded. Cameron has created a sweeping epic that is beautiful, heartfelt, and exciting. And come on, what 14 year old kid wouldn’t want to watch dragons fighting helicopters?

Avatar takes place on a distant planet called Pandora where humans have discovered a valuable new mineral. This mineral is so valuable that the company and their hired guns are willing to drive out the natives, the Na’vi, to get at it. Our main character is Jake Sulley, a paraplegic ex-marine who travels to Pandora to pick up where his identical twin brother left off. Jake’s brother was a scientist who had signed up for the Avatar program in which a human’s consciousness could be »

Kick Ass Red Band Trailer: Hit Girl

Below you can checkout the brand new red band trailer for Kick Ass called Hit Girl. Clearly since its a red band trailer it contains content which is targetted towards a mature audience. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) - and forges a friendship with another fledging super hero, »

Box Office Report, Avatar is King

20 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

Dude here again. Only two more box office reports left for 2009, can you believe it? What a crazy year it's been, from the Mall Cop to the New Moon, and everything in between. It certainly has been a roller coaster ride, full of terrible movies making far too much money, while more deserving films got swept under the rug. It's all part of this ridiculous game that gets played out every week. A game which I bet on every week in Vegas, hoping to make a fraction of the Transformers 2 gross.

To date, I haven't made a dime, mostly because I insisted on betting obscene amounts on movies like Ninja Assassin.

This weekend, James Cameron came around to change everyone's game. Did he succeed? Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. The actuals will be available on Monday).

1. Avatar (Fox) $73.0, 3452 screens, »

Avatar... A Whole Lot of Hype Movie Review

20 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST

I went to see Avatar on Sunday to checkout what all the fuss is about and to engulf myself in the glory that is James Camerons latest blockbuster which has a price tag of reportedly $500million. The film did very well this weekend bringing in over $200million world wide but I felt myself asking throughout the film.. whats all the hubbub about?

Avatar is a good movie but its a formula movie. You have seen the plot done a hundred times in a hundred different movies and frankly is really lacking originality. Where the movie is truly original is in its visual FX but at the end of the day for me visual FX do not make the movie. In fairness I went to see it in 3D to checkout his brand new 3D technology but the showing was full and I decided to go to the 2D screening rather then going home empty handed. »
