Jonah Hex, Officially

The Spanish-speaking movie geeks at Omelete, partner site of our friends at Collider, have gotten their hands on a new look at Josh Brolin as the supernatural gunslinger Jonah Hex. But that's not all. They've also scored up an official synopsis for the Jimmy Hayward directed actioner, which also stars Michael Fassbender, Michael Shannon, Will Arnett, John Malkovich and Megan Fox. Have a read of the synopsis below: Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone…and anything. Having survived death, Jonah’s violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the “other side.” His only human connection is with Leila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah’s past is about to catch up with him »

Sam Raimi Wants His Own District 9, Has Panic Attack!

This one goes out to those of you who are clamoring for a sequel to this year's sci-fi surprise District 9. Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures shingle have won the rights to Panic Attack!, a short film concept by Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Alvarez. The short, which has been tearing up the YouTubes for months now, is reminiscent of Alive in Joburg, the short that director Neill Blomkamp used to get the attention of Peter Jackson, leading to the production of District 9. According to Uruguayan newspaper El Pais, with help from the folks at Film Junk, Alvarez has signed a deal with Ghost House that will allow him to make a feature-length version of Panic Attack! on a budget of $30-40 million. According to the report, Raimi spoke with Alvarez over the phone and the two seemed to hit if off. The idea is to recreate the relationship between Jackson and Blomkamp, allowing »

World War Z Movie Still Lumbering Along, Says Writer

One project worth following is the adaptation of Max Brooks' fantastic novel World War Z, which has been underway at Paramount for quite some time. The book has long been heralded (by yours truly) as the zombie book to end all zombie books, and in my mind it would make quite possibly the coolest 12-part miniseries in the history of cable television. That said, Paramount is still trying to make the dang thing into a feature film. A mistake on many levels, yes. But still potentially chock full of awesome. Last week, Collider caught up with J. Michael Straczynski, the writer assigned to the project, as he was promoting his latest work, Ninja Assassin -- the final product of which does not give us any hope for the future of man, let along the future of Straczynski's work. During the interview, they talked briefly about where World War Z is -- about 5 drafts in -- and »

Peter Jackson: The Hobbit is Going to Take a While

No one is accusing Peter Jackson of rushing through production on The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings prequel that he and Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) are currently scripting. The producer/director has been taking his sweet time, and for the most part it seems as if fans around the world are giving him a pass -- because they know if he gets the time he needs, that he will likely do it right. According to German site MovieReporter.net, Jackson revealed in an interview this week that The Hobbit and its planned sequel will now start filming in mid-summer 2010 instead of the previously-reported March. TheOneRing.net has the translated quote: We're currently working on the second script which we hope to have completed by the end of this year or beginning of next. When the scripts are completed, we can begin with the exact calculation of the necessary budget. We »

Daily Diversion: Ask a Ninja Reviews Ninja Assassin

"This is like the Saving Private Ryan for ninjas!" After having to sit through Ninja Assassin at Fantastic Fest, I was personally clamoring for some real ninja action -- something that didn't feel like a hyper-stylized cartoon. And something that didn't star Rain. Luckily, my all-time favorite online entity Ask a Ninja is out to give us just that with their review of James McTeigue's body-impaling opus. As you will see below, the real ninja's take on the matter is far more hilarious than Rain's bad acting, his threats of killing you if you don't see it over New Moon are far more menacing, and in a way, we're more attracted to him than we are Naomi Harris. Alright, that last part isn't exactly true. Either way, you should watch today's Daily Diversion below, in which a real ninja reviews Ninja Assassin... hilariously. Have a video that you'd like to share as a Daily Diversion »

How To Cinematically Fall Off the Grid

On August 15th, 2009, Evan Ratliff, a freelance writer for Wired magazine went missing. On purpose. He wanted to see if one could disappear into the ether in an age where we are surveilled, swiped, and social security numbered to death. Where our IPs are tracked and we willingly give information about our lives through social networking. In a recent issue of the magazine, Ratliff recounted his attempt to change identities alongside the mad pack of tech savvies who were trying to find him (and earn a bounty of $5,000). It's in that spirit that I wanted to see what we could learn from films about the subject of leaving your life behind and creating a new identity. 1. Double Back The Film: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade The Lesson: One of the first things Ratliff does is allow a toll checkpoint to register his ID tag before tossing it out the window, doubling »

Exclusive: Jason Reitman Throws His Pie Chart Up in the Air

Let it never be said that Jason Reitman isn't a good sport. The man was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director for his second film, he's already launched several careers (including, technically, his own), and he's on the permanent Directors to Watch List for the rest of his life. Not bad for such a short time in the industry. Yet, even with the positive buzz coming out for his new flick Up in the Air, it seems like he's just as famous for his twitter profile, and the circular graphing tool that he's consistently published during his press tour. The Pie Chart of Most Asked Questions: That was the chart as of the day that I interviewed Reitman (October 29th), and I decided to have some fun with it. Instead of asking the usual, boring questions that have clearly been retread as much as 83 times, I decided to take the one word or two word codes »

Box Office: New Moon Almost Blind Sided by Sandra Bullock

Well, we almost had a big upset at the box office this Thanksgiving, as The Blind Side almost toppled The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The fact that The Blind Side did so well this weekend has to rank as an upset in its own right. The weekend box office gives New Moon $42 million to The Blind Side's $40 million. What's more, The Blind Side actually won on Thursday, beating New Moon $9,485,000 to $9,200,000. In fact, The Blind Side did even better than last weekend -- it was up 17.6 percent at the box office while New Moon, perhaps not so surprisingly, was down 70 percent! For the five-day Thanksgiving Day period New Moon earned $65,999,682 while The Blind Side earned $57,530,347 for fifth and sixth all-time, respectively. Overall New Moon crossed the $200 million mark domestically on Friday and The Blind Side is already at $100 million. As for the new movies this weekend, Old Dogs made $16,846,000 on the weekend and $24,085,000 for the five-day »
