Movie Review: “The Men Who Stare at Goats”

6 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST

Seen on: November 5, 2009

The players: Director: Grant Heslov, Writer: Peter Straughan, Cast: George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Rebecca Mader, Stephen Lang

Facts of interest: Inspired by Jon Ronson's book.

The plot: A journalist may finally find his big story when meets a man who claims he is a psychic soldier with paranormal powers.

Our thoughts: Grant Heslov’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats” is a bizarre little film, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s as funny as it’s awkward, and that’s certainly a good thing. This light comedy may not be very meaningful, but it’s filled with a solid dose of witty moments and a bunch of excellent acting performances. »

Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd set for 'Yogi Bear'

6 November 2009 12:51 AM, PST

Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake are the first to join the cast of Eric Brevig's upcoming "Yogi Bear" film for Warner Bros., which is prepping the project for a December shoot.

"Bear" will be a mix of CGI and live-action, much in the same way as the recent "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "Garfield," two films that absolutely sucked (and looked terrible). It will be shot in 3D. »

Movie Review: "The Fourth Kind"

5 November 2009 10:08 PM, PST

Seen on: November 3, 2009

The players: Director: Olatunde Osunsanmi, Writer: Olatunde Osunsanmi, Cast: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton, Corey Johnson

Facts of interest: Apparently based on actual case studies...

The plot: The film follows a psychologist investigating mentally unstable patients who claim they made contact with aliens.

Our thoughts: Contrary to my expectations, Olatunde Osunsanmi’s “The Fourth Kind” totally failed to scare me. Sure, the film boasts a couple of creepy moments here and there, but most of the time, it finds itself resorting to incredibly cheap thrills to keep its audience captivated. In my book though, this one misses its mark. »

Movie Review: "A Christmas Carol"

5 November 2009 9:31 PM, PST

Seen on: November 2, 2009

The players: Director: Robert Zemeckis, Writer: Robert Zemeckis, Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn

Facts of interest: Based on the story by Charles Dickens, obviously.

The plot: The classic tale is back on the big screen, and Scrooge is still hating Christmas, until three spirits pay him an important visit...

Our thoughts: Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinemagoers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed. »

Pierre Morel to direct 'Signals' thriller

5 November 2009 5:59 PM, PST

Pierre Morel has been inking quite a few deals ever since his fast-paced thriller "Taken" turned into a box office hit, and one of his upcoming projects is a thriller titled "Signals" for Media Rights Capital.

Plot details are stirctly kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter says the film should take on the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like "Three Days of the Condor."

Richard Potter and Matthew Stravitz penned the script, and Mrc is convinced Morel is the perfect man for the job. Morel's next film, "From Paris with Love," will open Feb. 5, 2010.

Morel is also developing thrillers "Pursuit," "Hunter-Killer" and an untitled film. I really enjoyed his "Taken," even though the film was certainly no masterpiece. It sure was entertaining to watch though. »

Danny Boyle's next film is '127 Hours'

5 November 2009 5:58 PM, PST

Danny Boyle, whose "Slumdog Millionaire" won a ridiculous eight Oscars, is prepping his next project with Fox Searchlight: "127 Hours," a drama focusing on the story of mountaineer Aron Ralston.

Simon Beaufoy, who wrote "Slumdog," is in talks to write the script from a treatment by Boyle. Variety says the plan right now is to have the film ready for release by late 2010.

"127 Hours" is based on the true story of Aron Ralston, who amputated his own limb and rescued himself after his arm got pinned under a boulder for almost five days during a climb in Utah in 2003.

Boyle's directing credits also include "Sunshine," "Millions" and "28 Days Later." "127 Hours" sounds like an intense project, and I'm already interested to see what Boyle ends up doing with it. »

Zach Galifianakis to voice 'Puss in Boots'?

5 November 2009 5:57 PM, PST

Zach Galifianakis is the man, mainly because you will soon hear and see him in everything. Now "The Hangover" star is even considering a voice role in the upcoming "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots."

Specifically, Galifianakis is in talks to voice Humpty Dumpty in the film, which follows the adventures of the feline swordsman. The story focuses on what happens to Puss before he runs into Shrek.

Chris Miller, co-director of "Shrek The Third," is helming the DreamWorks Animation title from a script by Tom Wheeler. Antonio Banderas' and Salma Hayek's voices will be featured in the film as well. »

'Twilight' star Ashley Greene has 'Apparition'

5 November 2009 5:54 PM, PST

"Twilight" girl Ashley Greene (she playes Alice Cullen in the series) will soon be haunted in Dark Castle's upcoming film "Apparition," which Todd Lincoln is writing and directing for Joel Silver.

Variety says "Apparition" follows a young couple haunted by some kind of supernatural presence generated during a college experiment. Ahhhh, yes, it sure is time for another haunting story, right?

The trade also says the whole thing is inspired by true events, which is reason enough for me to hate this film already. Anyway, production will kick off early next year.

Greene, who will next be seen in "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and then in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," also recently wrapped "Skateland" and "Warrior." Yeah, she's got decent looks alright. »

Cool new 'Sherlock Holmes' trailer delivers!

5 November 2009 12:12 AM, PST

The more I see of Guy Ritchie's upcoming "Sherlock Holmes" adventure, the more I'm excited to see this film. A brand-new trailer just exploded onto the Web, and you can watch it after the jump.

As you can see below, this new trailer features a whole bunch of new footage, most of which looks really cool. It's a visually interesting and action-packed preview that works for me on several levels.

The focus of this preview is obviously the particular relationship between Holmes and Watson, and it looks like Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law really have what it takes to pull this off. »

New 'Despicable Me' trailer disappoints

4 November 2009 11:05 PM, PST

A brand-new teaser trailer for Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin's upcoming 3D-animated family flick "Despicable Me" has popped up on the Web, and you can take a look at it right after the jump.

Steve Carell voices Gru, an evil man who plans to steal the moon. While his evil mother encourages him to execute his plan, Gru runs into trouble when he unexpectedly encounters three orphan girls.

This special preview focuses on Gru's rivarly with Vector, another villain. Sadly, I'm not at all impressed with this footage. I did enjoy the first teaser trailer, but this one seriously disappoints. »

Lame trailer for 'How to Train Your Dragon'

4 November 2009 10:44 PM, PST

DreamWorks Animation's next project is a family adventure titled "How to Train Your Dragon," and a feature trailer for the film directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders has debuted online.

Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.

Hiccup’s world, however, is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view...

Jay Baruchel voices Hiccup, and judging solely by this trailer, "Dragon" features a terrible voice cast. To be honest, I found it quite painful to listen to these characters in this mediocre trailer. »

Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to host Oscars!

3 November 2009 7:27 PM, PST

Last week we learned Hugh Jackman would not host the 82nd annual Academy Awards, and while I didn't care too much about that, I admit I'm pretty excited about the new hosts for the upcoming show.

Ladies, and gentlemen, give it up for Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who will co-host the Oscars March 7, 2010. Telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman made the announcement earlier today.

"Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event," they said.

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” Martin said. He and Baldwin will soon be seen onscreen together in Nancy Meyers' upcoming comedy "It's Complicated." »

"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" finally received its first feature trailer, and at this stage, I like what I'm seeing. It definitely doesn't look perfect, but it sure is action-packed. See below for more.
