Holland Apologises For Advising Gay Actors To 'Stay In The Closet'
15 July 2009 12:11 PM, PDT
Emmy-winning television and film director Todd Holland has apologised for encouraging gay actors to "stay in the closet" at a Los Angeles gay and lesbian film festival.
The Wizard director caused an uproar during a panel discussion at last weekend's (begs11Jul09) Outfest Film Festival, when he encouraged young, gay male actors to hide their sexual preference in order to maintain success in Hollywood.
Gay rights activists reached out to Holland, who has now issued an apology through GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to clarify his position.
The statement reads: "As an openly gay man in Hollywood, I know first hand the tremendous challenges that people throughout the industry face in terms of being open about who they are. For people who know me, they know that I believe it's important for people to live openly and authentically, and I am sorry for my poorly chosen words at Outfest. At the end of the day, I hope my comments do not prevent us from having honest, thoughtful conversations about the significant barriers that make being an out actor in Hollywood an ongoing obstacle."
Kaczmarek Blasts Custody Battle Rumours
15 July 2009 12:11 PM, PDT
Malcolm In The Middle star Jane Kaczmarek has blasted rumours she's fighting for full custody of her kids with her estranged husband, former West Wing actor Bradley Whitford.
After the couple ended its 16-year marriage earlier this year, it was reported the 53-year-old actress wanted their three children to live with her full time.
The gossip prompted Kaczmarek to speak out and insist the break-up was amicable and custody will be split 50-50.
Her lawyer tells Us Weekly magazine, "We're gearing towards a 50-50 time share with the children. I don't anticipate any fighting."
Rowe Denies Fighting For Custody To Save Reputation
15 July 2009 12:11 PM, PDT
Debbie Rowe has hit back at reports she is only fighting for custody of her two children with Michael Jackson to avoid ruining her reputation.
Jackson clan matriarch Katherine was made temporary guardian of Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, aka Blanket, after her superstar son died last month.
Rowe's alleged confidante Rebecca White claimed to have received an email from Jackson's ex earlier this month, indicating she had no intention of fighting for custody of the eldest two kids, the New York Post reported on Wednesday.
In one email Rowe allegedly wrote, "My lawyer is telling me I have to take some responsibility about the welfare of the children. Do I want the kids? Hell no. Does it look good for me to ask for them? Absolutely.
"I don't want to look like the woman who gave away her kids and just forgot about them. Would Michael want (his dad) Joe to have them? I think it would be the last thing that he would ever have wanted."
White added: "The motivation is money. I really have to be honest... If the children aren't the ones she wants, what else will she gain from it? It's not like she doesn't love them. It's not like she doesn't want the best for them. But her life is different. The idea of being a mother to those children is something I don't think she really wants... She can't just sit back in the shadows and not say anything because then she will be looked at as the woman who gave up her children, and that's a horrible thing to say... She had to do something to protect them in a way."
But Rowe has denied all the allegations and reportedly plans to attend a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing on 20 July for temporary guardianship of the children.
Rowe's attorney says in a statement: "Our firm has sent Ms. White a letter disputing the truth of her statements and demanding that she make retraction in order to avoid legal action."

The actor admits he has never started dating the conventional way, and considers every woman he meets a potential partner.

Bullock's Joy At Bully Role
15 July 2009 6:31 PM, PDT
Sandra Bullock loved getting into character for her role as an office bully in The Proposal - because it allowed her to spend three months in a bad mood.
The Speed star plays a hard-bitten boss who corners a male employee into marrying her so she can get a permanent U.S. visa in the new comedy.
She stayed in character for months during shooting and admits she enjoyed every second of it - because she had an excuse to order family and friends around.
Bullock says, "I think you probably see the real me in this film! On set, at home, in the bedroom on weekends - you know what I'm saying? But it's liberating to just be an a** for three months and say, 'It's Ok, it's my job, I'm an actor.'"
Kardashian's African Customs Ordeal
15 July 2009 6:31 PM, PDT
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian almost found herself stranded at a South African airport after she left her passport on the plane.
The socialite is currently on a trek of the continent with her sister Khloe and NFL player boyfriend Reggie Bush as part of Russell Simmons' Diamond Empowerment Fund.
But the trip took a sour turn as Kardashian landed in Johannesburg from Botswana, when she realised she had misplaced her most important travel documentation as she queued in the customs line.
And Kardashian was almost left behind in the airport after staff refused to let her leave the building without her ID.
She explains to People.com, "They wouldn't let me out of customs line. They (airline staff) claimed they looked for it but I had a feeling they didn't. They called the embassy and said I would have had to sleep at the hotel airport."
However, her beau Bush came to the rescue - sweet-talking airline staff into letting him look for the passport on the plane.
She add, "Reggie begged to go check for the passport himself ... and he found it! He saved the day!"
Bruno Banned In Ukraine
15 July 2009 6:31 PM, PDT
British funnyman Sasha Baron Cohen's hit new movie Bruno has been banned by authorities in the Ukraine amid fears the controversial comedy will "damage the morality" of locals.
The outrageous film, starring Cohen as gay Austrian fashionista Bruno, has been a success in the U.S. and U.K., debuting atop box office charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
But officials in the eastern European country are refusing to allow it to be released in their cinemas because of the "unjustified" shots of genitals and homosexual sex scenes. The decision to ban the film came after nine out of the culture ministry's 14 members agreed to veto its release.
Explaining the ruling in a letter to the country's film distributor Sinergia, officials say: "The Ukrainian ministry of culture has decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory.
"The film contains unjustified showing of genital organs and sexual relations and shows homosexual acts and homosexual perversions in an explicitly realist manner. (It also contains) sadistic manifestations which could damage the morality of citizens."
Taylor Denies Jackson Grief Meltdown
15 July 2009 6:31 PM, PDT
Elizabeth Taylor has hit out at reports she was recently hospitalised after the death of her close pal Michael Jackson left her emotionally drained.
The 77 year old legend, who has been battling ill health for the last decade, was reportedly rushed to a medical centre near her home in Beverly Hills on Monday.
Taylor was allegedly being treated for exhaustion due to an emotional breakdown following Jackson's death.
Some press reports even speculated the star had to be sedated after a particularly severe attack of grief.
But the actress' representative has quashed the reports, insisting Taylor was taken to hospital for a "minor, though painful, surgical procedure".
The spokesperson tells Entertainment Tonight, "She is in for standard tests and a minor, though painful, surgical procedure. That's it. No drama, no shrieking, no sedation required. Nobody on her staff is worried. Period."
And the rep also released a statement from Taylor herself, saying, "I twittered in anticipation of what some of the cheaper rags would say about my going into the hospital at this time. I am fine and will be home soon."
