Born an only child on the outskirts of Toronto, Canada, Heffernan's first break came with a chance high school job-shadowing assignment on the set of New Line Cinema's Detroit Rock City (1999). The one-day project would blossom into a production job, an appearance in the film and a friendship with the film's creative heads.
An alumnus of McGill University and the AFI Conservatory, Writer/Director Gavin Heffernan first hit the independent scene with his microbudget feature film 'Expiration'. Catching the attention of Variety, Film Festival Today and Ain't it Cool News, the $10,000 Montreal feature took Grand Prize at the Canadian Filmmakers Festival and was later named "the first major work of the Student-DV New Wave" by The Film Journal. Co-financed by Executive Producers Michael Huffington and Steve Bing, Heffernan's spiritual AFI Thesis Film Santa Croce (2007) was a popular draw on the film festival circuit and was later distributed Worldwide on December 16, 2007 through Itunes and Shorts International.
After graduating from AFI in January 2007 Heffernan co-founded 'The Film Summit', an industry event focused on preserving cinematic relations between Canada and Hollywood, featuring works from the American Film Institute and Canadian Film Centre. Though a voting member of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, Heffernan's company 'Sunchaser Pictures' is based in Los Angeles, California. With plans for his next feature 'Departure' underway, Heffernan's experimental film about the American Peace Movement titled 'Grand Wheel' is slated for its USA Premiere at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
