In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.)
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2009.
Last year, some of the category winners were chosen by both the AfterEllen.com staff and AfterEllen.com readers. This year, AfterEllen.com staff and contributing writers chose the winners for each category, as readers will be given the opportunity to vote on a wider range of topics and categories in our first annual Lesbian/Bi Women's Choice Awards in January.
Once again this year, we've included international people, shows and movies as a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the Internet. »

In 2009, the number of leading lesbian characters on primetime broadcast TV doubled — from one to two.
Out of the estimated 600 lead and supporting characters on network TV, seven of them of are lesbian or bisexual. And of those seven, five of them kissed women last year. And of those five, three of them made out during Sweeps.
Things looked bleak at the beginning of the year, but with the growing trend of lesbian brides getting gunned down or cheating on their wedding days, and the continued trend of bisexual characters only expressing their same-sex attraction during Sweeps, and the loss of Showtime's lesbian drama The L Word, we're ending the year on a downward spiral in terms of lesbian visibility.
Scripted Television: Broadcast
The most surprising story in 2009 was the relationship between Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw) on Grey's Anatomy.

“You’re gonna die poor, drunk… and alone.” The season 3 finale of Californication was its best episode ever. If you’ve been following Californication since day one, then each moment was even more rewarding than the next. Mia’s (Madeline Zima) return could have been a simple gimmick, but it wasn’t. The drama tied up three seasons of push and pull between Karen (Natascha McElhone) and Hank (David Duchovny), with the love of Becca (Madeleine Martin) dangling in the middle. While everyone gasps over the season finale of Dexter, watching this Trinity unfold was just as satisfying. We knew that Hank’s secret about Mia would be exposed at some point, but we never really had an episode that fully explored the mental impact of Hank’s sexual indiscretions. Taking a page from The Sopranos’ creator David Chase, Tom Kapinos created a semi-dream episode that revolved around Hank’s emotional abyss. »

Californication's Hank Moody (David Duchovny) has tap-danced his way out of lots of hot water this season. But in the Season 3 finale (Sunday at 10/9c, Showtime), he's got one more obstacle to clear: Mia (Madeline Zima) is back.
Check out photos of the Californication cast
Mia, the daughter of Hank's ex's then-fiancé, has always been a cloud of trouble for Hank. After Hank slept with her — unaware that she was 16 at the time — she virtually blackmailed him by stealing the first novel he'd written in years and publishing it as her own. So what brings Mia back to L.A. now, after being M.I.A. all season?

I’m sad to say that without Kathleen Turner, Californication Season 3 took a small nosedive in Episode 11, “Comings & Goings.” The conflicted drama between Hank Moody and his inner struggle to choose his love for Karen over a quick ejaculation was trivialized down to a mediocre episode of “How Hank got Me.” Episode 11 actually felt more like the season finale. All the major conflicts of the season have already been concluded. Hank’s love pentagon has been resolved, with Karen once again coming out on top. While at the Runkles, Marcy and Charlie seem to have put aside their indiscretions to continue their marriage. What else can happen this season to make you watch? How about the return of Mia? That's right, after a season of Heroes, Madeline Zima is back on Showtime. The girl who fucked and punched Hank will be making a surprise visit to shake things »

On the mid-season finale of Heroes, Gretchen said goodbye to Claire at the Sullivan carnival.
But did her portrayer, Madeline Zima, bid farewell to the show at the same time?
No, the actress told TV Guide this week. While not revealing too many detailed spoilers, Zima spoke on her character's future on the series.
"I think [Gretchen] knows it's a mistake," Zima said of Claire's decision to stay behind with Samuel. "She's only doing it because she knows Claire can't physically get hurt. That's the way she rationalizes it. The best and most pure act of love is just letting someone go and letting them do what they feel they must."
Meanwhile, Heroes is off the air until January. Chime in now with your take on how to fix the show! »

I guess the Heroes writers were going for the obvious with this episode title, instead of trying to come up with something more subtle. The November 23rd episode is Thanksgiving-centric and our two main families (the Bennetts and the Petrellis) come together with some big confrontations (for example, the fact that Nathan and Peter now know what their mother did with Nathan's body and Sylar). We've got 5 sneak peeks for you, along with a promo.
Thanksgiving Unites Families Together And Brings New Revelations
H.R.G. (Jack Coleman) hosts an untraditional Thanksgiving dinner. Elsewhere, the Petrelli family gets a surprise guest at their table. Meanwhile, Samuel (Robert Knepper) continues to hold Hiro (Masi Oka) hostage, as Lydia (guest star Dawn Olivieri) goes in search for the truth.
Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Adrian Pasdar, Zachary Quinto, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Cristine Rose and Milo Ventimiglia also star. Ashley Crow, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Madeline Zima, »

Bolstered by the irresistible catchphrase "Save the cheerleader, save the world," NBC's sci-fi series Heroes debuted in 2006 as an instant cult phenomenon. And yet, seemingly from the moment the general public caught on, Heroes has battled negative buzz and declining audience numbers, to the point that it has now returned to its original cheerleading premise, but with a very particular kick added to the pom-pom routine. On a recent episode of Heroes that got more than a few tongues wagging, resident pep-squad blonde Hayden Panettiere kissed Madeline Zima, long and lustfully. So now it's: "Turn the cheerleader bisexual, save the show." According to London's Daily Star tabloid, the kiss may well expand into something more substantial. "It's just girly fun at first," the Star reported. "It might progress into something more serious; it depends how viewers respond." Viewers responded with fast and »

We've been a bit neglectful so far this fall season with our television coverage, particularly when it comes to analyses of episodes week to week. So we're going to do our darnedest to correct that oversight, starting right here, right now, with a look back at last week.
After careful consideration, we began to realize that detailed reviews of every episode of every major series, every week, was just too unwieldy—we haven't the manpower, and we doubt you have the patience to sift through long deliberations about the lives of your favorite characters on your favorite shows. We'll still do more detailed reviews every once in a while, but expect analyses of partial seasons more often than individual episodes.
So what's the alternative? Mini recaps/reviews. Think of them as Bk Burger Shots for your pop culture soul.
Ok, that's a wee bit disgusting. Think of them as "reviews you can use, »

Well you can definitely say things are heating up on Heroes, even with the slow simmer that was this week, and the week priors, episode. Even though every episode ends with their usual “To Be Continued…” moniker, these past two episodes really seemed like they fit a little bit more into the two-parter mold. Mostly because the characters from last weeks and this weeks episodes were prominent in both and it didn’t really veer off into what the overall arc of what this season is about. And what is this season really about? So far they have been taking their time with what could possibly be the life ending, earth shattering point of it all. Not that I really have a problem with a nice, good build up but I’m really dying to know what’s up with that compass and what the final motives of Samuel and his circus are. »

Spoiler Alert
A Main character in sci-fi TV show Heroes is to be killed off this season, sources at NBC have reportedly confirmed.
It's being seen as yet another move to boost ratings for the struggling show after lesbian scenes involving Hayden Panettierre's character Claire Bennet failed to win back audiences.
The character to be bumped off is male and has been with the show since the beginning, claims E! Online. Speculation is running rife online but there are no official confirmations.
Panettiere, 20, says it was her idea to have a same-sex storyline: "I kinda threw it out there. They [the writing team] put you in relationships and I was like, 'Can I just be with a girl or something...? Let's do that.' So they took it and ran with it. She's a great girl ... and we have a blast."
But Claire's girl-on-girl kiss with new college roommate Gretchen (Madeline Zima) failed to get ratings sizzling, »

Last week, Claire and Gretchen engaged in flirtatious knife play while wearing very lesbionic white tank tops. This week, Claire Bear receives the most awkward kiss ever from Gretchen and is rendered speechless. You’ve seen the hype about this moment since the spoilers from Comic-Con, so without further ado, let’s jump into the recap of the episode containing the most hyped lesbian kiss on network television in the last few months and get it over with.
At the beginning of the episode, Claire and Gretchen are noshing in the dining hall, and Claire cannot stop grinning. Gretchen asks why Claire is smiling, secretly hoping that Claire would reveal that the reason why she grinning like a Teletubby on ecstasy is because she is basking in the glow of Gretchen’s presence. But, alas, Claire states that the reason why she is finally at ease is because no snipers »

It seems that Hayden Panettiere and the other cast ensemble for "Heroes" have to say goodbye to one of their co-stars on the hit NBC show. Some sources from the TV series tell E! Online that the production team is currently working on a scene which will show a major character on the sci-fi series dying.
Hinting at the character which will be killed off on the show, the site claims the leading role is a male and one of the original cast. However, E! Online refuses the mention the name of the character who will no longer appear on the show.
As of late, a still from "Hysterical Blindness", the October 12 episode of "Heroes" season 4, has been released. In the shot, Hayden Panettiere's Claire Bennet is snapped making out passionately with Madeline Zima, who stars as her college roommate named Gretchen.
Commenting on the same-sex kissing scene, Hayden told In Touch Weekly, »
