He and his wife, Susan, have two adopted Korean daughters.
He was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 1997.
Excluding the original pilot episode, "The Cage" (not picked up by the network but re-worked and re-cast), Zaslov was the second person to die in the Star Trek universe, in 1998. Jeanne Bal, who played the salt-sucking creature who killed him in "The Man Trap", died in 1996. (Including "The Cage" and archival footage repeated in the two-parter, "The Menagerie", the first person to die in the Star Trek universe was Jeffrey Hunter, 'Captain Pike', in 1969; and the second was Susan Oliver, 'Vina', in 1990).
The first victim for whom Dr. McCoy uttered the famous words, "He's dead, Jim".
Met his second wife and widow, actress turned physical therapist Susan Hufford, when they were both in the Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof" in the early 1970s.
